i totally agree with you on the story telling aspect: focusing too much on the original cast is a pitfall. we would, as an audience, be left with characters that mean a lot less to us than those we already know. what happens when we move into episodes VIII and XI and the OC suddenly has a lot less screen time? or do people want the ST to be a rehash of the OT, complete with old versions of our cherished childhood heroes? well, not this guy! if they're clever they'll make this movie about the kids and have awesome cameo/supporting roles from the OC. like you said, connective tissue, not vital organs. besides, having those guys appear when it'll have an impact on the story, rather than just on screen because the movie is about them, feels a lot more "movie magic" to me.

as for the sales, again, i agree with you: i think it's smarter to focus on the kids and flesh out their character/merchandise than to push the OC who we already know will sell. you've got, got, got to focus on the younger audience to get this whole franchise running again, especially with the ambitious line-up of movies: to think we'd live in a day when there's a new Star Wars movie every year! :)

having said all that, i hope it's clear that i love the fact that the OC is in this movie; like everyone agrees, once in a life time type stuff. it's a smart move, and if they do it right it'll have so much emotional punch that everyone will fall in love with Star Wars all over again.

I'm as old school as it gets, and grew up on the OT (I was 3 in '77, so Star Wars WAS my childhood). I'm so happy to have the six cast members back in whatever capacity.

    ...BUT...

I think that capacity shouldn't hinder the new young cast from owning this trilogy. Three trilogies, three different generations, three different casts held together by some characters. I actually worry that the OT cast will get TOO much screen time in this movie. If they do, how will the new cast carry part VIII and IX with the audience firmly behind them? The droids are going to be in every movie as they should be. Chewie might not have a large role anyway. But Luke, Leia and Han shouldn't be the focus of this movie, they should be there to help set up the cast and the plot of the 7th film and be window dressing for the 8th and 9th. And honestly, the only one who needs a healthy chunk of the script is Luke's character as the Obi-Wan role.

If I had to apologize for every time I pissed off the mods... ummm... wait, I do have to do that...

But as for reading the unfinished story in Salmon... ummm... no... I just can't bring myself to do it... I get as far as opening the book, and then closing it... and feel good with the knowledge that I can still do that with his work on an unread story

Obi-Wan didn't really have that big of a role as the Obi-Wan role... think about it, he is absent until he finds Luke being attacked by Tuskans... dies on the Death Star during Leia's rescue... and has a couple of force-ghost moments, some of them without having to appear. In the grand scheme of things, Lando or Fett probably had more actual on-screen time

[NOTE]Crap... here is one of those places I get to appologize to the mods... double post... and I was doing so well[/NOTE]
