I just finished ROTS again, and when yoda fails to kill the emperor, he goes into self emposed exile. Is this where Luke got his failure cooping mechanism? I wonder why yoda didn’t seek out the force tree or original temple, seems the information was more readily available than for Luke, so what gives?

Was he more “jedi” than “force worshiper”? Or was he so whooped that he just couldn’t get it together?

In any respect, light side users sure don’t seem to deal with failure very well

    Anyways, thoughts?

Maybe Yoda just liked that old swamp...or just waiting...for Luke to come make a visit.

As for coping with failure...who does? I can relate although I don't go into self imposed exile on deserted places.

IIRC, Dagobah was chosen because it was rich with life and the Force and it was very distant. Yoda could hide among the Force there. I don't think that he'd want to go somewhere that could be significant to Vader or Palpatine.

Luke went into exile searching for answers while Yoda went for preservation of the Jedi.

Yoda didn't go and look for the Force Tree because Rian Johnson hadn't invented it yet :p

I think Luke has more parallels with Obi Wan than Yoda. It's true they both went into exile, but (IMO) for different reasons and under different conditions. Yoda didn't go looking for the Jedi Temple like Luke, I think Luke was looking for understanding and when he left the Republic was still very much a central repository of power, they had resources, ships, military, it wasn't like Luke was leaving everyone else without some protection. Yoda and all the remaining Jedi went into exile knowing that the Empire was the central power and that they were actively being hunted. There was no government or military support for him.

As for Luke and Obi Wan, they both have had failed students who wiped out Jedi, who then take on one last student in order to restart the Jedi.

We don't know Luke's mindset but I think the simple answer is that they each followed what the Force directed them to do.

Or Yoda foresaw/hoped the next generation might save the galaxy. Luke on the other hand lived with the failure of re-starting the Jedi perhaps he wanted to compare his method with the original or he was losing sight of why it might be worth it.

Well honestly, Yoda had already seen those things (more than likely) as he was 900 years old and seen most things "Jedi", and the last thing he wanted to do was go to one of those places where the Empire might be inclined to look. He likely went to Dagobah with it's "massive life forms" as a mask...a way to hide...and wait.

Luke on the other hand, went into exile to wallow in his own failure hoping to make some sense of it all, while hoping that some answers and/or enlightenment on the issue would come.

I think Yoda saw what was coming for the Republic, and may have actually already had a plan...and we saw it.
