Star Wars: Rebels returns after the back-to-back two-parter to a normal one and done-in-22-minutes story. I have been somewhat critical to the format of 22-minute non-two-parter episodes of Rebels. Is this episode any different? It's an episode featuring Zeb, so...anything is possible. Is this episode just a means to an end? Let's find out!

    10.jpg

    SPOILERS BELOW!

    What worked for me:

    - AP-5
    7.png

I have been adamant of my love for AP-5 and I was wonderfully rewarded with his presence in this episode. Since the other members of the Ghost Crew go out on some kind mission without Zeb, it's only Zeb, Chopper and my boy AP-5. He is the perfect balance between exposition and comedy. This episode, IMO, gives us even more reason for AP-5 to show up. I found myself laughing out loud a number of times about how blunt he is. We need more of him and less of Chopper.

    - Imperial Infiltrator Recon Droid
    8.jpg

We have seen this droid design in Rebels before, and originally it comes from the early designs of C3PO by Ralph McQuarrie. His designs are timeless and it doesn't matter what era or version you use of McQuarrie's. They can be used in Star Wars at anytime and they all fit and look amazing. It was clever of the writers to allow this innocent and harmless looking droid to transform into a death machine.

    1.jpg

Just like the Imperial Probe Droids, these Infiltrator Recon Droids carry a self-destruction device, this particular one being a Proton "Warhead." I don't think the Probe droids are packing those, damn! I hope to see more of these droids in the future (or even a toy, Hasbro). Even in "death mode," I thought this droid design was awesome.

    - Thrawn's reckoning is coming. 2.png

A lot of us have been waiting for Thrawn to drop the hammer on the Rebels this season and it's looking like it's about to happen. We know this is happening from the latest Rebels mid-season trailer also, but the end of this episode shows that our Rebels are in deep trouble...and that makes me kind of excited. Does that make me an awful person?

    What didn't work for me:

    - Zeb
    5.jpg

Zeb is not the worst character in Rebels, but my patience for him is wearing thin. That's mainly because he's played as the "big, dumb guy" of the group. AP-5 points this out so many times, it seems almost as if the writers are admitting to us how ridiculous he is. The ironic thing about Zeb is that I loved the 2 episodes that featured him and his people, as well as the episode where Kallus and Zeb mimic the film Enemy Mine. This episode, however, only manages to show the weaker side of his character, prominently featuring his bumbling idiot persona. Zeb is obviously WAY better than this and I wish we could abandon that side of him and depict him as more of the great leader/warrior that he is.

    Quick Hitters:

    - I love the homage to ESB with this opening shot of this star destroyer dropping out droids to recon the galaxy.
    9.jpg

    - It's been cool seeing more Landspeeders that look like Luke's in the show. We don't get them that much in the films.
    6.png

I thought this episode did a good job of pushing the overall narrative forward while having a fun one-and-done story. If it didn't set up that Thrawn is going to be dropping all hell on the Rebels soon, then I think this would have been a mediocre episode. Can't wait to see what Thrawn has in store for these Rebels!

As always, I look forward to reading what you all thought of this episode!

Having Thrawn making progress on the Rebel Base really made this episode a success in the end. If it did not end on that note this would have been a very weak episode.

I actually liked this episode, because Zeb was not "big, dumb guy". Yes, he is inclined do solve the problems with brawn, but it was his idea that saved the base AND harmed the Empire.I, however, agree on AP-5 he was a delight. He worked well with Chopper and now with Zeb, let's see him with some other Ghost crew character.

Thrawn is one methodical guy and we start to see how his patience is starting to pay of. Kalas, I might say, is a very reckless Fulcrum - he basically contacts the Rebels the second time to give them a pat on the back. No wonder our guys would have to organize a rescue mission.

It seems I am repeating myself with every episode, but the animation this season is top notch. Not just amazing space battles and landscapes, but also minute facial expression that weren't there before - I noticed them with both Zeb and Thrawn.

Also, I wonder, when Thrawn inevitably discovers the Chopper Base - is the next one Dantooine?

All in all, a solid episode. Not "Twilight of the Apprentice", but still solid. Next time, MANDALORE! (sabine)

I would say this was a fine episode of Rebels that had a few very important things in it. Agent Kallus is really pushing his luck helping the Rebels as Fulcrum. This implies to me that he is going to die later this season. AP-5 was pretty fun and it was nice that they were able to use McQuarrie's art for the Imperial droid. Zeb's plan for dealing with the infiltrator Recon droid also was a pleasant surprise considering he was constantly being mocked by AP-5 and Chopper for being all brawn and no brains. Finally, Thrawn's scene at the end was the most pivotal for the season as a whole as he finally made some progress on finding the Rebel Base. Initially I was hoping that Thrawn would discover it in this episode but I think it fits his character better for him to find the rebels this way through his own ability and ingenuity. Overall the Thrawn scene made it a worthwhile episode in my opinion.

It's likely that this episode may be categorized as a "filler episode": because no Jedi/lightsaber action.
Although the Zeb + AP5 + Chopper combination was supposed to be a recipe for comedy, I think at times it was too predictable.
The Recon droid reminded me scenes of Terminator. It was cool to see his transition from apparently-friendly droid to predator mode. Nice to see Chopper saving the day by freezing the droid's clock.

To me this very much had a filler episode feel.

The Mandalorian episodes cannot get here soon enough!

I'm surprised no one mentioned the horror movie vibes. The droid had echoes of body transformation horror and the bomb was a direct nod to "predator".

I liked this episode and I don't consider this filler because it is definitely a conversation piece episode, I blame the show writers for Zeb. He had great development from dumb muscle to Captain Orrelios former protector of the Lasan royal family. It makes sense that after all his loss when we meet him at the start of the show he wanted to live a simple life with out the responsibility of leading people or being serious. Once we got that story arc about his past we could except him as being more, but then they keep using him for comic relief so that regresses him. We are seeing a lot of new tech connected to Thrawn. I would like to see a episode of him connected to Krennic possibly explaining how they are both pushing Imperial science in weapon design and that common interest has made them allies, possibly sharing technology to their mutual benefit. Maybe Krennic gave him the design for the infiltrator droid and Thrawn gave Krennic a detachment of Death Troopers. Lastly we don't know how much was information was salvaged about the explosion from the infiltrator droid since it killed the technicians as well. It would have been a great opportunity for Kallus to blame the explosion on another build defect or possibly Govenor Pryce and leave the Rebels out of it completely. So many thoughts about this episode.

    Not too bad!
Felt like a good ol' Saturday morning toon viewing...which (as I've previously mentioned) is the main objective for me with 'SW Rebels'. (i.e. - to feel seven or eight years old again, for twenty minutes.)

•Nice to see some touching up on Zeb, –though I still feel he's a superfluous character– I enjoyed the episode regardless.

•Caught the clear nods to 'Empire', 'Terminator' & 'Predator'.
    –Appreciated.

•I also relished that the writers formed what could've been "filler" into some main story progression. –Well done.

•Ending-- "Kallus! Get outta there, buddy! ...Before it's too late!"

Didn't the mid season trailer give that away already.

    I suppose. I'm not sure.

...But I "felt it" at the end of this particular episode, regardless.

My thoughts were that it was just ok. Not bad but not really good either. I too can't wait for the Mandalore episodes

OK, so mom and dad are out of town and leave big brother in charge of the kids. Some madcap hijinks ensue, but everything works out in the end . . . . . . . . . seeya next week.

EDIT: Just came across this and wasn't sure if it had been brought up in a thread before: Knobby white spider

I LOVE Zeb, and he working with chopper was great fun. It was a good episode for a kind of filler episode, and had a few gems in there as well. I enjoyed it.

If Filoni gets his way, it will go 7 seasons, and end near ROTJ.
