Rebels is back after ANOTHER week hiatus to give us "Iron Squadron," which reintroduces us to yet another Legends aspect. This time it's the famous ship of one Dash Rendar...THE OUTRIDER! Can this "Iron Squadron" episode match the quality of the fantastic previous episode? Does Dash Render make his first canon appearance? Let's find out!!!

    IMG_2427.png

    SPOILERS BELOW!!!!!!!!!

    What Worked for Me:

    - The Outrider

    IMG_2433.png

I was in 8th grade when the massive Shadows of the Empire event was happening. I knew that there was a new Star Wars movie happening, but the massive launch of everything that came with that story was a big deal for me. I knew that the Outrider ship and it's pilot were Han Solo replacements, since the story took place between ESB and ROTJ, but I have a certain fondness for those characters and that era. Seeing the Outrider on screen was a special treat. Yes, the Outrider was in the ANH special edition and I always thought it was cool that George Lucas put it in there. Same thing with seeing it on Rebels. Sadly, No Dash Render in sight...that we know of anyway. The Iron Squadron consists of three Ezra-like kids, but who knows; maybe one of them adopts the name of "Dash Render?" Never know (I know I am stretching).

    - The space battles.

    IMG_2424.png

The way the ships move in animation is really impressive. I know that I have been a broken record about this all season, but it really made the episode for me. The weightiness of the ships' movement reminds me of the films and IMO, that is an extremely hard task. The more space battles, the better, is what I say! Extra battles really could have helped this episode, but more on that later...

    - Chopper vs. R3

    IMG_2431.png

I have no idea why, but I really liked these two bickering droids going at it in this episode. People who read these reviews know that I am not a Chopper fan and I was surprised that I liked this so much. Maybe I love those cone-head droid designs? I don't know, but it was cute seeing those two fight and work together.

    What Didn't Work for Me:

    - Too much of the episode takes place in the Outrider cockpit.

    IMG_2432.png

As much as I love the Outrider, this episode was somewhat of a drag to get through. I love space battles a lot, but it seemed that there was WAY TOO MUCH talking in cockpits to make this episode entertaining. Mart Mattin floating around in a busted Outrider seemed like an eternity for me. Yes, I am being dramatic when I say that, but that's what it seemed like at the time. I just wanted to keep pushing the story and the action forward.

    - Thrawn is...planning something...I think.

    IMG_2429.png

We all know Thrawn is up to something. What that is just has to drawn out in other FILLER episodes, I guess. There are those two dreaded words again: FILLER EPISODES! And that is exactly what this episode was. I love this version of Thrawn, but I pray that we won't get too many more episodes of Thrawn essentially testing the Rebels. He's already let them escape in previous episodes and we need to see him to step up soon without it becoming redundant. I have faith that will happen though.

    Quick Hitters:

    - It's good to know that triangle waffles are essentially the hot pockets of a galaxy far, far, away...

    IMG_2428.png

Yeah...this episode wasn't my favorite by any means. This is probably the worst of the season, sadly. Luckily, it's not terrible, it's just not up to the high standards to which I hold this show. Obviously, Iron Squadron isn't done in the overall story of Rebels and I'm sure they have they bigger role to play coming up. This was just a means of getting them involved.

As always, I look forward to reading your responses of what you all thought of the episode!

    Paul

I think Zeb put it the best when he said that YT-2400 was "full of Ezras". I agree that this wasn't the best episode, but did I read this right - that Thrawn and Sato have some history between them? Or they know each other by reputation alone? It was strange considering that a couple of episodes ago they didn't even know who Thrawn is.

I agree that the space battles are superb this season. I also liked the animation for Mart, which tells me he might appear again. I am a fan of Chopper so I always like when he decidedly supports Ghost crew in front of strangers. Of course, he had to 'encourage' the other droid out of the ship.

I think they are saving Thrawn for the second part of season and they are just building him up now. They might put at least part of Maul's story to rest before Rogue One comes out in that 'Vision and Voices' episode. I dare say that darksaber will then make its appearance too. Three more episodes before the break and - ROGUE ONE!!!

I thought this was a very bland and forgettable episode. I felt like Thrawn was there just to remind us that he exist. I liked Zeb's line "looks like a ship full of Ezras" and then he goes off for his own adventure.

really getting frustrated with how they are using thrawn. 95% of the time he is standing around twirling his proverbial mustache and plotting... maybe? i hate to reference the thrawn trilogy here, but what made thrawn so great was he always seemed to be one step ahead of everyone, he was an actual threat. now at the end of this one when thrawn finally entered the field i thought here was his moment. he was going to kill sato in a brilliant trap. but nope he let everyone go again with out firing a shot. what is he doing, what is his plan, does he even have a plan? i'm going to give filoni the benefit of the doubt here, of course, but i can't help but be concerned.

The YT-2400 we see in this episode is not the Outrider.

Far and away my least favorite episode of this season, and probably one of my least favorite overall. I'd argue that it's basically "Fighter Flight" tier, and is basically the kind of episode that people were worried Rebels would be back when the show first started. Well, at least there was the appearance of the not-Outrider, the only highlight of the episode.

Also, I've mentioned this on the podcast, but I really think they're not utilizing Thrawn as effectively as they could be. Right now, his few appearances have amounted to a cycle of...
    • "Should we do something about the rebels?"
    • "Yes, we should do something about the rebels!"
    • "Later, let the rebels have their victory for now - we will strike when they least expect it."
...and this episode more or less exemplifies this by having Thrawn only being in the story for the sake of being in the story. There will come a moment where we see what he can do, but I've got the sinking feeling that it won't come until after the mid-season finale - and even then, I think it'll be a while into the second half of the season before we see what Thrawn actually has planned. (I'd love to be proven wrong, though - and I hope that they keep Thrawn around for the remainder of the show in order to make his presence more meaningful.)

That's what a Disney twitter handle said. It's since been deleted.

i think this is the third week in a row i've just watched andi and the rebels recap. There has been no point actually watching the episodes.

Rebels is fast becoming inconsequential to my star wars fandom.

A really weak episode and a filler. This kind of episode worries me about Rebels.

By and large, I'm lockstep with the notions above— 'Iron Squadron' is yet even *more* filler & priming for later episodes or other SW stories.

And at *this* point, I empathize with those that get the sense of this episode was like adding a seventh layer of primer paint to a living room before adding the long-awaited 'Mint Whisper Lavender'.

But hey- it's still interesting. Accompanied by 'Rebels Recon' gabs & chats, I find the overall experience appealing.

The episode was alright but definitely not great. It seemed to me that Ezra could recognize himself in the youthful bravado of the Iron Squadron. Perhaps the Iron Squadron might play a role in Ezra's "descent" later in the season. The Iron Squadron might be captured and, in his desperation, Ezra uses the dark side of the Force to rescue them.

However, I agree with @Darth Ezra that the plan that Thrawn is drawing up must better be devastating to the Rebellion. He had the opportunity to land some significant blows in this one and previous episodes.

Its another fodder episode. Thrawn will be a factor like how Julius Ceasar was in Spartacus. It was a heart felt episode with uncle/nephew Disney type feel. Oh I can be on my own, wait I do need help, thanks Uncle Sato! It was just a bunch of kids who show courage in what they are doing but are still too young to understand the whole universe Disney type episode. Season 3 hasnt been up to par cause of R1 coming to fold and trying not to give alot to Rebels that R1 can show more about. The point of Rebels is the fate of Kanan/Ezra/Ahsoka as far as Jedi goes. they are the only Jedi/force wielder in the galaxy that Vader knows about. The time line to R1 is prolly a few years back but I would like to see something form in Rebels from R1 and the death star. maybe we get to see a glimse of the construction of the death star in Rebels(like we seen in ROTS) and possibly a saw guerra apperance with starting another rebel cell(R1) to help further the Rebels into finding a bases and the stolen plans(R1)

We might see a connection between Rebels and Rogue One in Episode 10, "An Inside Man".

no amount of dressing up will disguise how much of a filler episode that was.. but hey ho, perhaps it was only disappointing because of how good the series has been so far?
the Thrawn i remember was all about the end game. it's a long game of chess, and he'll have his pieces and his enemy's pieces exactly where he wants them at the end.

I'm not convinced that his end game is defeating the rebellion. I think his end game is to be in the big chair running the whole show... post ROTJ.

we will see, but i'm not buying some half ass showing as another useless Empire minion that fails during the OT.

I found this episode entertaining, yeah maybe more like a build-up episode to bigger things to come. Anyhow I enjoyed it.

We have to mind also the times in TV. Most of the series had already Winter Finale episodes last week since this week there are holidays in the US. So kids are out of school since Friday so audiences are expected to be lower.

Agree. We have to remember this is the building-up period of the season towards the mid-season finale and the second part of the season. Thrawn is exactly like a chess player, moving his pieces across the board to crush his enemies with a swift movement.

    Bwahahahaha Mint Whisper Lavender. Hilarious.

Did you catch that the kids were named after Lucasfilm employees? Gooti Terez is (Andy) Gutierrez, Mart Mattin is Matt Martin, I don't know who the bald guy is, but I'm sure he is someone too.
