Rebels has had an interesting two weeks considering the episodes they have released have been heavily criticized one way or another. In a long season of 22 episodes, I think we can all agree that they all can't be 10/10, but these lackluster episodes introduce the fear that the series could be in a slump, like a struggling power hitter in baseball. Does Thrawn actually do something in this episode? Does the episode, in an obvious way, move the overall season narrative forward? Let's find out!

    1.jpg

    SPOILERS BELOW!!!!

    What worked for me:

    - Grand Admiral Thrawn
    9.png

I think this episode will be a relief for a number of fans starting to get concerned that Thrawn might be going to waste on this series. Thrawn's presence is immediately felt and he's not playing around. We also get to see him analyzing art, which will make all his hardcore fans happy, but it also hints at what might be coming down the road for the rebels and an eventual confrontation with the Admiral. He's close to figuring out who Fulcrum is...and it might not be a good thing for said character. Speaking of Fulcrum...

    - KALLUS IS FULCRUM!!!!!!! WOW!!! (sarcasm)
    6.png

It was obvious since we first heard the new Fulcrum's voice who he was, but it in no way dilutes his impact on this episode. Kallus could be turning into Rebels' most interesting character behind Kanan. My main question is when will he finally flee the Empire? He better get out quick because Thrawn is set to find out who he is sooner or later and that makes me REALLY nervous for Kallus. I could see the creative team killing him off to push the stakes of the show without killing one of the Ghost Crew and that would BUM ME THE HELL OUT!

    - The Tie/D Defender
    8.png

I'll admit that I don't have any feelings on the Tie Defender making its way on to the show, but I do continue to love the fact that the Rebels creative team is putting in a ton of EU creations in this season.

    10.png
The Tie Defender first showed up in the Tie Fighter video game that came out in the 90's, so it's a deep cut for the show to put it on here. You can also see it on the latest DLC for Star Wars: Battlefront.

    What didn't work for me:

    - The Rebels as Stormtroopers
    7.jpg

It's not that this is an awful story idea and that it didn't work for this episode, but it's getting repetitive. I have zero ideas what they could have done instead, but I do think that this needs to stop at some point. And let's stop the sneaking around and put the wars in Star Wars, right? This is admittedly a nit pick too, btw.

    Quick Hitters:

    - I believe the painting (or whatever the hell it is) behind Thrawn is a Mandalorian from the old Tales of the Jedi comics!!!
    2.jpg

    - This Landspeeder is just a little off of Luke's and it's bugging me for some reason. Just looks...off. 5.png

    - I love these helmets.
    3.jpg

I think for most fans that this episode will be a rebound episode. It's driving the overall story forward, is finally showing how brutal Thrawn can be, and it's setting up some interesting storylines that will be coming up in the second half of the season. As I said earlier, I am EXTREMELY nervous for Agent Kallus.

As always I look forward to reading your thoughts, reactions AND corrections.

I think Kalas is a goner. It will bum me out too, because I liked him even when he wasn't Fulcrum but I can see that Thrawn already has suspicions about him. It will be painful when he is turned against the Rebels, but you know it's going to happen.

Kalas and Chopper are my new favorite OTP, lol. :D

Ezra making the situation with Kalas 'looking convincing', and Kanan saying 'I wanted to do that', cracked me up.

If TIE Defenders provoke the creation of X-Wings and we see that in the show, on screen, I will be the happiest Star Wars fan in every galaxy. :)

I am someone who never read the Thrawn trilogy and I won't be reading it until Zahn's new book is released (though I skimmed through the comic), so I can get the pure, canonical Thrawn first (in Rebels and Zahn's new book), but I like what I've seen so far. He is a cold, cold menacing bastard and I like how he makes connections between things. I can see them seriously ramping up things with Thrawn in the second part of the season and I fear for the Rebels. I wonder if they'll dare to break our hearts on Disney XD.

Great episode and the next one should be to.

I liked the episode a fair bit. As said, the Kallus/Fulcrum thing was obvious, but still fun to see. And then Trawn had menace and malice in equal measure which was great.

If I had one complaint, it would be that while the TIE Defender was cool, I was like almost positive that they were going to do a Rogue One tie-in with the TIE Striker and I kinda wish that they did.

Great episode and (obviously) far better than the last two. That dude's death was really shocking.

I'm just really intrigued with that "mandalorian" sith painting in that grouping of holograms at which Thrawn was looking. If you notice, all of the other art pieces had specifically to do with Ezra or Hera, etc. I'm wondering what the connection is there, if any.

Great episode, not only was Thrawn always connected to the Tie Defender program, awesome game btw, it is always nice to see some ancient stuff like temples or the Mandalorian Mural.

What I would have liked to see is a bigger factory, I find it hard to believe that you build an army, that is going by strength in numbers, just with so few workers. Could have gone a bit darker in tone there.

Since this guernica-esque painting is from the episode "The Mandalore plot" And some other art Thrawn dissects is from Sabine, I think he is aiming towards her and her connection to the Mandalorians and House Viszla, Saxon ect. We know where her mother is..

Very cool episode, quite a Fulcrum spoiler I didn't expect, Thrawn sure was a ruthless as this episode & books revealed.

Yeah- THIS was much more along the lines of what I wanted from 'Rebels'.

    Great stuff.

It was about time for Thrawn's character to demonstrate some ruthlessness– that was "nice" to see. ...Really though.

The TIE-Defender concept caught me off guard. ...And if it's actually a concept forwarded by Thrawn, it (may) play a strong role in his downfall or separation from Palpatine's Empire. (From everything I remember, the Defender is an outrageously perfect starfighter, -ideal in ALL respects, --except for production time and expense.) Palps seems to be a big fan of quantity over quality— and I imagine Thrawn would be in hard opposition to that perspective.

I have more to say, but I've got a family Sunday to relish.

    Later! ❤️

From what I am reading online some viewers are not realising Thrawn is a tactician not a brute force operator,he will deliver a blow when he feels it makes the most impact and not a moment before.

I think its the fact that there hasnt been the factor of thrawn's ability. you just dont let someone go to find out there weakness. I dont kno awhole lot about Thrawn but I dont think he would be a strong figure in Rebels. Like I said before to me I think hes plays the role like Julius Ceasar in spartacus.

The only thing that was good about the episode is that it leads you into the next episode, hopefully. if the next episode doesnt somewhat continue from this one then it was a filler and the storyline for season 3 is off. I kno that they are having a 2 part storyarc but if it doesnt tie in then inside man doesnt factor in. I thought the secret plan was the death star.

They made it seem like Kallus was worried about being caught but lets not forget he is a ISB agent for a reason and he was portrayed as having a great deal of guile before he needed to start losing to the rebels for story reasons so it makes sense that he will be fine as soon as he frames Governor Pryce as the mole.

I think it wold be interesting to have Agent Kallus defect to the Rebels (officially) and have him eventually become Crix Madine. Not sure if Crix Madine has a Disney Canon backstory?

I enjoyed seeing the Rebels back in Lothal, as well as Kanan and Ezra pairing up again like in old times.

Agree, the death of the fellow was sad, but unfortunately as we go forward with the Season I have the bad feeling we will have this kind of losses more frequently.

Finding out Kallus = Fulcrum was something we were speculating for a while, but I had the impression Fulcrum was an identity taken by several individuals. (Lol and I was hoping one of those individuals was Cassian Andor, just for another Rebel cell.)

Good point. Yeah I have the impression Sabine will play an important part of the episodes to follow.

Yeah we know how old Palps rolls.

I would not be surprised if Thrawn already (or soon) knows who Sabine's mother is and he somehow will use her mother to set a trap for Sabine and the rest of the Rebels (who he knows will help Sabine).

Hey there- despite the poor quality images, is there anyone out there inclined to help me out with this second image... *attached* -it's one of the images Thrawn had on display, in this episode– at first I'd thought it was a group of "blurrg-riding" Twi'lek, and while it could easily be depicting Twi'lek riders, they're surely not blurrg, as they're drawn much more wolf-like than the flat-faced blurrg. Hmm? All of Thrawn's other images are quite easy to comprehend- but I find this one confusing. ...I've heard Filoni is a fan of wolves, but... (?)

As an admittedly HUGE stretch, I remember (at some recent point) reading something about the concept of Ahsoka & Rex riding some wolf-like creatures off into the sunset...somewhere(?)

Odds are I've just forgotten about an occurrence/happening in some other episode.
But can someone please set me straight here? I'm curious.
