If you are not a comic book fan but consider yourself a Star Wars fan, I say now is about the time to suck it up and give these books a chance. They are cannon, they are legit, and they are the Star Wars bus leaving the station...so don't get left behind. By that, I mean that the writers and the Lucasfilm Story Group are adding nuance and detail to these characters you thought you knew so well. We have already seen it in the first two issues of the general Star Wars, and now we are seeing it with the beginning of the Darth Vader series. I have no doubt that all of these details are going to make the experience of The Force Awakens much richer. I will step off my soapbox now and tell you a little bit about issue number one of Darth Vader, but seriously, get yourself to a comic book store now and get going if you haven't already.

Right off the bat I'll say we have some SPOILERS. One thing this issue does is not only tell you how the arc from the Star Wars comics just released ends, it literally SHOWS you. I'm going to do my best to skirt around spoilers and plot specifics, but tread lightly if you want to read this for yourself unaware.

By now most of you have probably seen the opening pages of Vader entering Jabba's Palace to engage in "aggressive negotiations". It's a nice little ROTJ throwback, but overall served little to the story once you find out the reason for his visit. I enjoyed Vader putting Jabba in his place, but I could have done without that intro and had those pages devoted to something else. Never been a fan of fan service. Just sayin'.

We jump back one day in time to Coruscant and the Imperial Palace. Vader is reporting to the Emperor about what happened on Cymoon. If that name sounds familiar it's because that is the planet you were on last week in Star Wars comic land. I won't spoil it for you, but let's just say we can assume that story arc does not end well for Vader.

And the Emperor is not happy.

    Shot_02.jpg

These pages were the most fascinating to me of the book. The Emperor basically talks down to Darth Vader in the tone of a condescending boss dealing with a menial employee. The Emperor blames him for the destruction of the Death Star and pretty much everything else wrong with the Empire. An interesting line of the Emperor's alludes to the Empire not being in that great of shape and that it could collapse at any moment. Perhaps down the line we are going to find out the Empire was much more vulnerable than we always assumed. The Emperor, despite his dressing down of Vader, seems like a grumpy tyrant who fears losing a little control will result in the loss of everything.

Then....there is the mystery man standing in the Emperor's chambers when he and Vader walk in. A good portion of the man's face is....cyborg. Other reviews online have mentioned a resemblance to Max Von Sydow. Possibly a TFA character? I'm on the fence, but see for yourself. Vader asks who the man is and the Emperor dismisses him and tells him it's not his concern. I do think this fella will pop up again, but I'm not ready to say he's Episode VII material.

    Shot_03.jpg

The last pages are ones I'm not going to talk about in specifics, because you should be surprised when you read them. What I will say is that Keiron Gillen, the writer of this fine book, did was remind us there is still a little bit of Anakin Skywalker in that dark armor. You also get reunited with an old friend who now I'm really uncertain how this person gets a spin-off that takes place in this time period.

The art by Salvador Larroca is fantastic and evocative of both existing trilogies. Jabba is the Jabba we remember and not the CGI distortion of other incarnations, he is the Stewart Freeborn Jabba. Larroca seems to have some fun with the Emperor's appearance, giving us a variety of facial appearances we've seen from old Sheev in the past. Keiron Gillen gives us a perspective that is Imperial/Vader-centric, once again pointing out that the Empire is not as monolithic and chinked-free as the ones in power would like it to be.

    Shot_04.jpg

I highly recommend this first issue, and I'm looking forward to where it takes us on Vader's new journey which eventually becomes his obsession. As I mentioned earlier, the Story Group is giving us a whole new way to look at these characters and events. The existing films will have a more depth, while TFA will have a streamlined and cohesive history to unfold upon.

Amazing issue. Somehow it was hard to read it in Vader's voice as opposed to Anakin. The character you mentioned did have qualities of ... A cyborg. That alone kept me IN!!

    This issue...the art. Damn.

8 year old me lost it when Vader force choked Jabba.

The ending? Powerful stuff. Marvel is KILLING it.

I know what you mean...that was by far the coolest part in the issue. I literally had an "Oh, no he didn't!" moment when vader force choked the slimy crime-lord. The Star Wars series is great, but this tie-in looks to be my favorite if they keep up the good work. Awesome issue. It was cool to see that the hatred that arose in Anakin after the death of his mother which began his quick descent into darkness still smoulders 22 years after she died. This issue really did a good job of displaying the might and terror of Vader while also giving us a glimpse at the Emperor's control over him. The bit where Vader chooses to withhold the information about Luke and Obi-Wan showed us the rise of rebellion in Vader which we know eventually leads him to his plan to overthrow the Emperor with Luke's help. Can't wait to see what happens next!

Hi. I'm Mike. I'm a 40 year old Star Wars diehard from the old school and I haven't bought a comic book in probably 20 years (since the Dark Hors Thrawn Trilogy series, actually).
I'm really enjoying the new Marvel books quite a bit. I'm just getting them digitally since I can't seem to find the time to actually drive to a comics store these days, but that's fine. I love reading them at home, fullscreen on a 60" HDTV.
Aside from the unnecessary fan service (these books alone are all the fan service I require), the obvious screen capture facial expressions bug me a bit. I do prefer it to the increasingly lazy art of the Dark Horse books, but there's still something a little unsettling about an almost photorealistic drawing of Luke or Bib Fortuna, to the degree that I can actually pinpoint the exact moment of the film where they grabbed it (I'm pretty sure Luke screaming at Vader in #1 was his reaction to Obi Wan's death).
Those minor quibbles aside, they've captured the voices of the characters, which was almost always a problem in ALL of the old EU continuity, and they're solid adventure stories instead of politics and soap opera. I'm sure we'll get to some sudsy action sooner or later, but keeping it fast paced and fun to ease us all into this new era is a solid tactic. I mean, it's working for me!

Thanks Mike! Never thought of putting the comic on my TV. I'm going to give that a shot. I usually read the comic first on a digital download then purchase one from my local shop later in the day for keepsake.

I highly recommend buying the physical copy first. Reason being, so far both Star Wars comics and the Vader comic have come with a code for free digital download on the Marvel App. So for the price of one, you get the other. I'm not sure if this is the case everywhere or if it will be with every issue, but so far they are three for three. I like having the physical copies which I read once and put back in card and sleeve for collecting purposes and when I want to read it afterwards, i go to the digital copy. Marvel's pane by pane viewing works really well with these comics.

I hear ya. Every little bit helps. Especially considering that starting here in about two weeks there will be a new Star Wars comic released every Wednesday from there on out. Awesome sauce...

I thought it was Ok but there's not a lot variety in the panel layout and the script was simplistic. But not bad.

Good review. The comics are on point. You are doing yourself a disservice if you choose to not read them.

On a side note: I hate to be nitpicky, but it's spelled Sheev

In regards to the guy with the Lobit-like implants: did it not also look like half of his face was Rodian?

Loved every bit of this book. PT Anakin kind of tarnished Vader for me, but the Jabba scene in this issue made me feel like I was 3 years old again, sitting in the theater covering my eyes when Vader came on screen. With the amount of SW titles Marvel will be pumping out, this looks like it might be one of the must-buy books.

Thank you! Whoops, thanks for catching that

I thought that too! There is something protruding from the back of his head attaching to the cyborg looking part. That's the only reason I didn't mention it. Glad I'm not alone.

I don't need to post what I was going to say anymore ... you already expressed my thoughts bro! I really liked how they foreshadowed Vader's plans ...

My goodness! What a save! I was contemplating buying digital copies having already bought the physicals... I saw the download code thing, but it was under a Howard the Duck advert and I thought it was a download of the first issue of that to promote it. Cheers for that!

Also, is it me or is the creature from JJ Abrams' marketplace scene for TFA in the background in Jabba's Palace? Could just be the same species obviously, but we've also seen it in Star Wars 001, so seems popular at the moment!

I looked again. I couldn't find the little fella. You must have sharper eyes than me. It would be funny if he pops up in other media in the new cannon.

First chance I get, I'm going to do something I've not done before-buy a comic book!

This is a great review Kyle, and I am now a convert. This is worth having for the artwork alone, but I actually like the story too.

I looked again and I think I was potentially blinded by my excitement... It was a similar facial structure, but a different species! My apologies! I feel like quite the fool!

Vader 001 has impressed me fathoms beyond what I expected (and I was optimistic)! The fact it brings together PT and OT material seamlessly is impressive and we're really seeing that dynamic between Vader and Sheev that we saw slightly in Tarkin and should see full force in Lords of the Sith. The Star Wars series is great, but Vader really captures that darkness that I think is lacking in a lot of the Star Wars universe and what a perfect home it has found! That final panel and the build up to it was just phenomenal!

Still can't get over the fact that I've had access to these digital copies this whole time! Ahaha!
