Review: Star Wars: Yoda #5 Shows Tensions Coming to a Boil Between Jedi Padawans

The fifth issue of the Yoda comic sees tensions rise between Krrsish and Gheyr as the young Wookiee Padawan struggles to deal with his vision from the Force, which shows the Trandoshan Padawan Gheyr slaughtering him and other Wookiees with a red blade.



Where the first three-issue arc of this comic showed us how beneficial Yoda's teachings can be, this arc seems to be showing us how his relatively hands-off guidance can let down his students. It makes it easier for Krrsish to discard his advice and listen to the likes of Dooku for greater clarity. Neither of these sources succeed in preventing the young Wookiee from heading down a dark path, and it makes you wonder if Yoda will be able to bring him back, or if these will be one of those failures that keeps him up at night all these years later.



The interesting nature of this topic makes it an entertaining read as Yoda appears to be failing Krrsish the same way he failed Anakin in Revenge of the Sith. This arc is definitely a step in the right direction for Yoda, and I look forward to seeing how it concludes.

We see that Krrsish is still brooding on his visions as he acts out against Gheyr, accusing her of enjoying hurting people after sparring with Jak'zin. Yoda picks up on his anger and fear and keeps him back after class to ask him about it, reminding him that these feelings lead to the Dark side. The Padawan elects not to tell the Master about his visions, remembering Dooku's words in the previous issue that not all Jedi take prophecies seriously, Yoda included.



As a result, Yoda believes that his feelings are related to the larger history between Wookiees and Trandoshans, and reminds him that this history does not have a place in the Jedi Order. He believes he's given Krrsish something to think on by telling him that Gheyr was found and handed to the Jedi by a group of Wookiees as a baby, symbolizing that is possible to grow beyond inter-species rivalries.







Unfortunately, it's not the lesson Krrsish needs. Though he tries to look beyond his vision and make amends with Gheyr, he is woken by the same vision again the following night.



Desperate to make sense of it, he runs not to Yoda, but Dooku before he leaves on a mission offworld. Once again, Dooku gives him reasonable advice out of context, but ultimately dangerous when applied to this vision in particular. He speculates that the vision could be a warning and advises Krrsish to be patient, to gather evidence, and to see if his visions give him more clarity, presumably thinking he would bring the matter to a Jedi Master rather than act on them himself.







But instead the Wookiee takes the matter into his own hands. He also ignores most of Dooku's advice, as Gheyr does nothing that would make anyone suspicious that she was falling to the Dark side. But Krrsish's patience deserts him, and during a survival field trip supposedly without supervision, he attacks Gheyr alone and ignites his lightsaber, hoping to cut her down before his vision can become true.



I'm guessing Yoda will step in at the last moment to save Gheyr, but it remains to be seen if he will be able to help his student after all. Krrsish has given into his anger and fear; it's often difficult for a Jedi to come back from that.
