So Daisy Ridley stated in the panel that her relationship with Luke is like meeting a hero, but that person is not how you idolized them (I'm paraphrasing). This sent people abuzz, but it shouldn't shock anyone. This absolutely echoes Luke/Yoda.

Luke was looking for a great warrior - probably even human. He absolutely had expectations of what Yoda would look like and act like. Luke didn't even consider Yoda at first because this small creature was acting like a pest rather than someone with wisdom. This would be Luke's first lesson and failure.

Rey obviously wants Luke to take the lightsaber and would be some great Jedi warrior-legend. But as we've seen she's wielding it in the trailer and wants the Jedi to end, so she fails in her first lesson. In fact, its assumed he WANTS to be found. The Force tells her in TFA to go there (her dreams that Kylo reads). But it doesn't say to meet Luke. That is something that she extrapolates in her conversation with Maz after Luke's saber calls to her.

The mere fact of Luke going to Dagobah put Yoda in danger. Rey going to Acht-To puts Luke in danger. These are all echoes. It's perfectly Star Wars. I for one am eagerly anticipating this script and story because what we know so far (and its peanuts compared to what we knew at this time in the TFA timeline) is incredible mythology building (again another echo - ESB built more on the Force and the mythology).

I wouldn't be surprised if that, "the Jedi must end" line is part of a trick, very much like Yoda acting like a little freak when Luke arrived on Dbah.

It technically doesn't echo Luke/Yoda because Luke didn't even hear of Yoda until Obi Wan told him to go see him in ESB.

Although Luke did have misconceptions about Yoda that Rey may have. Luke was looking for a great warrior and didn't give a thought to Yoda being a wise Jedi Master. He judged Yoda by his size, etc...

Actually that's not true anymore. According to the comic books that came out recently, he's heard of Yoda. He just happened to be freezing to death from hypothermia when Obi-Wan appeared to him. He also had dreams about Dagobah, just as Rey had dreams of Ach-To.

Also, an echo is not a direct copy. It rather shares the same similar beats and concepts. Obi-Wan's death is echoed in TPM and TFA but each of those were in different ways. Qui-Gon sacrificed himself to defend the Queen. Han sacrificed himself to try to save his son.

Yeah, I mean, even if he hadn't of said that in the trailer we all knew and assumed that Luke is indeed the last Jedi.

The real question is does "last" mean he's the sole one currently and that he will train more, or does it mean that Luke is something of an endling and that he is the ultimate Jedi forevermore?

MARK: There's a difference between teaser and a trailer. A teaser is supposed to show you dynamic images that heighten your awareness and make you want to see the trailer, but avoid all story points if at all possible. [But] I think that's the only story point that's in the teaser, which is Luke saying it's time for the Jedi to end... It was as shocking to me to read what Rian [Johnson] had written as I'm sure it will be for the audience.

    [ABC Nightline]
Daisy Ridley: Yeah [there were some big surprises even for me when I read the script]. I went to Rian's office and I was like, 'we need to have a talk about what's happening here'.

Mark Hamill: When I read, I told Rian [that] I fundamentally disagree with virtually everything you've decided about my character. But it might be a good sign because I was really wrong about [Episode] VII. I said, 'when I turn around the audience is going to be hootin' and hollerin' because it's such an obvious cheat.' I didn't forsee John Williams incredible music, and the shots of Daisy, the build-up to it all, so...I was never happier to be wrong.

Yea I find these parallels over trilogies very intriguing, it really adds to the mythological side of Star Wars. Who would've thought watching A New Hope that Han would become an Obi-Wan figure willing to sacrifice himself for the greater cause, or watching Empire that Luke would eventually become powerful enough to be compared with Jedi Master Yoda. Interesting stuff.

I'm a huge fan of bold, unexpected choices if they serve the story. I trust Johnson isn't going for shock value. These quotes excite me.
