Rey really should have killed Chewie

I agree, overall the fake deaths in tros were super annoying - Zorri and Babu, Kylo, and Rey. It was a bit much.

 

Rey should have killed Chewie to challenge her character, yes. Furthermore it would have been nice if she killed her own parents in the exact same way.

 

I thought that medal was Han's and not a new one. I mean, you don't kill the pet dog.

 

That I would have been a cool way to have something Rey and Ben to bond over, and showing her struggles with the lure of the Dark Side. I like that.

 

When I thought he died, I couldn't get it to sit right in my head. Did not feel like a good way to kill him off for me. Didn't like the fake death and wouldn't like it if they had killed him off for real either. (Liked the rest of the movie btw)

 

The thing is, he already got his medal in a canon EU book. But yeah, in the movie universe it's Han's medal.

 

It's a momento like Han's dice was for Leia.

 

That was the scene that I was like: "Omg...its not posible, poor Chewie, poor Rey...her guilty will take her directly to the dark side, there's no escape for her now!"
I think the impact for someone watching this for the first time was great! I had that bad feeling for like 20 minutes until Chewie appeared again. Cheers to JJ Abrams for achieving that!

 

That's why I avoid spoilers too. To enjoy the special moments like this. And we had a lot in this ST and RO.

 

Unless you watched the trailer. The trailer spoiled Chewie surviving.

 

It didn't spoil for me. Maybe I didn't pay attention enough. I was lucky.

 

In the trailer there was a scene with Chewie and Lando. Chewie was also with the crew at the second death star in the first teaser. All this didn't happened before the fake death.

So, it was just a matter of 1+1. Haha!

Well, the "what am I?" factor doesn't really change in either scenario because in her mind she did kill Chewie. Even though she didn't kill Chewie, she doesn't know that and so that factor is as equal to as if she actually had. Even when she later finds Chewie alive, the impact of that moment as relative to her nature is going to remain since it was an actual experience.

I'd also propose had she actually killed Chewie, that would really put a black cloud over the final sequence in the film knowing that Rey is directly responsible for the death of Chewie. The ending of the movie and of Rey's journey would be completely different in tone. Plus, the backlash from the internet would've been tremendous and if you think the Rey-haters were rabid before, I'd hate to even think of what things they'd say and try to do even to the actors and writers and directors.

 

While I can't say the same, the theater I was in was packed with people who went in 100% blind and it was a fun experience listening to all the gasping, crying and cheering for moments that I had mostly known about weeks prior to the film's release.

 

I legit love this movie, but I agree 100%.

Letting this moment be real would have raised the stakes for the entire rest of the film.

When I thought Rey actually killed him, I was like "holy crap, she might actually fall to the dark side."

but as soon as they revealed that Chewie survived, the entire "Will Rey go dark?" tension felt like a pantomime. There was never a question that she would stay good.
