OK, I am new to this forum so I missed the reactions to TFA and Rogue One when they came out. I guess there was as much debate about these films as there is about the TLJ.

I am one of those oldy types that was born and bred on Star Wars right from the original.

I was kinda OK with TLJ but I thought Rogue One was a classy movie.

So I ask, which film do you prefer in terms of its 'direction'...Rogue One or The Last Jedi ?

In terms of direction both movies are ok to me, I probably prefer Rogue One a little bit more.
In terms of writing I consider both TFA and TLJ conplete garbage. While Rogue One was not particularly about a story I wanted to see I think it had a well written coherent script so that gives me hope for the future.

Rogue One has a great third act, but it's a bit of a slog until that point. Very noticeable on rewatch.

It's only been out a well but TLJ should be more fun to watch over and over. I think I'm done with Rogue One even though I enjoyed it.

I really like Rogue One, I do, but The Last Jedi is simply better. Also, both films share similar themes and TLJ executes them in such a way that it actually makes you think of it outside of the context of the cinematic universe. Also, one thing that I truly appreciate about TLJ is that it works outside of the context of Star Wars (my mum liked and she's no fan of SW) and that, to me, is the ultimate stamp of a franchise film and Episode VIII for me definitely checks that box.

The Last Jedi for me. It's a bit longer, but the time flew by faster for me. I like Rogue One a lot, but I still think the characters weren't as relatable as those in the ST. It didn't hit me on an emotional level like TLJ, but I think it was cool that every character died, and that it felt like a war movie. Rogue One didn't surprise me as much, but it didn't really try to either. Vaders scene is one of the coolest visual lightsaber-scenes in the series, but I prefered
Rey and Kylo vs Guards and Luke's fake battle with Kylo.
Just my personal opinion, I can see why everyone would not agree with me.

Not even a competition for me. Rogue one bored me aside from the finale battle and great ending. It felt very marvel, but tragic.

TLJ way better film. In themes, acting and action.

The Last Jedi hands down imo

The fact that this one requires you to think a bit was marvelous. The plot wasn't handed to you on a silver platter.

I also loved the action and the path each character has taken and where it leads next.

    Just great challenging writing imo

IMO - Rogue One by a long way - yes, the plot is more basic (we know what sort of will happen) and it does stumble in the first act but it does not suffer a million plot holes and pointless subplot devices like the bad writing and execution of TLJ.

It fits into the universe well, using large swathes of inspiration from Akira Kurosawa and Seven Samurai - Homage to Lucas original ideas. The battle of Scarif on land and in space is simply amazing, with arguably one of the best Vader scenes EVER, and closes into ANH with ease. Personally for me it's the best Star Wars film since ROTJ.

I like both films a lot but I consider TLJ to win on two counts, it's a better crafted film in my opinion and it connected far more with me emotionally.

However that final Vader scene in Rogue One! By far my favourite moment in a Star Wars film since the original trilogy.

I don't think Rogue One even belongs in the same discussion. TLJ, despite a couple dips and a few gripes, is extremely thoughtful, beautifully shot and executed. I left the theater feeling like a 7 year old again, which was amazing.

I loved RO. Was a beautiful homage to the original SW and the last 40 minutes of film is amazing.

But I will stay with the nods, surprises and twists of TLJ. So memorable scenes. So different.

Rogue One is a great movie, but I think the last Jedi was better. Despite everything, both films are still excellent.

It's interesting that there is a thread where especially those two movies are compared with each other, because, for me, TLJ sometimes felt like an RO-sequel in some way...

Of course, TLJ uses the characters and plotlines that got started in TFA, but sometimes it feels like RJ wouldn't be interested in them, so Snoke gets no background story, Rey isn't really a main character and instead of just use the given characters he introduces lots of new characters, while some of the old ones die after a few scenes (not only Snoke, but also Phasma).

On the other side, TLJ has got many scenes and plotlines that tie in the discourses that had a prominent place in RO. Like at the end of RO, there are rebels that have to sacrifice theirselves. Like in RO, the idea of hope and the spark in the darkness is all around. And where TFA went all the ways the previous episodes went, TLJ use the spirit of STAR WARS and make something new with it - just like RO. And sometimes, Johnson is even more brave than Edwards: In RO, K2 can't finish the "I have a bad feeling"-line, while in TLJ, this line is hidden like never before in a episode. (For me, this was too much "braveness", so I don't like the way, RJ used this famous line.)

I love them both. I haven't seen The Last Jedi as often as I've seen Rogue One, so I can't tell which one I like better right now. They are so different.

I certainly felt more emotion watching TLJ, but for me that wasn't a good thing :p.

For me R1. I'm doing my best to come around on TLJ and the ST as a whole, but I don't feel I should have to go through these paces to like a SW movie.

Rogue one by far for me.

TLJ has problems a plenty. The mechanics of the film just don’t work or resonate for me.

So far I liked every next movie in this new era more than the last, Rogue One more than The Force Awakens, and The Last Jedi more than RO. But, as I said in another thread, it's really like comparing apples and oranges, they are vastly different. The final space battle in RO remains one of my favorite in the entire SW universe, I liked the characters and Vader was badass, but The Last Jedi is so much richer thematically and aesthetically. It's challenging, thought provoking and heartfelt. It's not even the contest and I loved Rogue One and Your Father Would Be Proud never fails to make me tear up. The Last Jedi all the way.
