According to the latest rumor from Jeff Sneider, Star Wars fans won't have to wait long before the franchise returns in a big way to cinemas.

After three gelid years when it comes to Star Wars film news, it appears development on new theatrical releases has definitely picked up, and a solid slate could be ready in the near future if the latest word from renowned Hollywood reporter and scooper Jeff Sneider is to be believed.

Straight from John Rocha's The Hot Mic show on Tuesday (hat tip r/StarWarsLeaks), the newest rumor claims Kathleen Kennedy has the next few years of Star Wars figured out, including definite projects on the feature side. Skip to 26:49 for the juicy bit:

According to Sneider, there's 'a lot of stuff coming down the pipe on the feature side at Lucasfilm to be excited about.' As we all know, Lucasfilm made a strong pivot to the TV side of things in order to beef up Disney Plus, and those plans aren't going anywhere, with several new Star Wars series and seasons deep into development and production. But it appears the studio knows there's a strong desire for more theatrical releases after a post-Episode IX hiatus that's been longer than anticipated -- remember that Patty Jenkins' Rogue Squadron was supposed to come out in Christmas 2023 and is now undated.

Whether this updated slate of Star Wars projects for the next five years or so includes yearly theatrical releases once things are back up on the feature side (we could be looking at 2024 at the earliest)... we don't know for sure. This could just mean there's a strong roadmap in place for both the TV and theatrical side of Lucasfilm, as the general sentiment at Disney after Solo: A Star Wars Story underperformed was that maybe they had released too many films too fast. However, many insiders and fans feel like the marketing and release date simply weren't the best, and believe that Star Wars could thrive in cinemas putting out a new installment each year.

As it stands, and despite recent cancellations, we know of at least three different films being in active development: Taika Waititi's long-gestating project, a (supposedly) post-Rise of Skywalker standalone created by Damon Lindelof, and Kevin Feige and Michael Waldron's secret film, which could be the same that Shawn Levy has joined -- if that's not the case, then we're looking at four potential films in the near future, five if Rogue Squadron comes back to life.

You're probably right and that sucks. I just don't get the logic of "too many too fast" Too many for who? Not the fans. Is there a problem getting creators? Here's an idea... just hand out unspecified movie deals to any "soup du jour" writer or director that pukes out a random episode or two on an HBO or Netflix series.
    Oh, you have...

I think Disney should take its time in releasing its Star Wars films and not try to rush it, as they did with the Sequel Trilogy. Perhaps the writing for the movies - namely any serialized ones - would improve.

It took 10 years to start the ST, with 2 years between each one. Do you consider that rushed? Especially since it wasn't the same production team writing, directing and producing each installment. Rogue One and Solo were completely separate productions as well, so they should have had no impact.

Disney bought Star Wars at the end of 2012. TFA was released about 3 years later. So it took them 3 years not 10 to start the ST. And within 7 years they released 5 movies. I don't know about you, but I think that was way too much. I don't want to have a Star Wars movie every year. Star Wars should be an event.

It took Disney three years to release "The Force Awakens" after its purchase of Lucasfilm. And between 2015 and 2019, the studio had released a SW movie every year.

Right, Disney purchased Lucasfilm, an active and functioning production company. I seriously doubt Disney scrapped any tangible project in the works prior to 2012. If anything, Disney should have, and probably did throw any pending projects into hyperdrive, both from a financial and marketing/demand standpoint. Now, that may be the very reason things felt rushed and quality suffered. Most likely(and optimistically), it's just taken a few years for Lucasfilm and Disney to find the sweet spot. All relationships have an adjustment period. Disney+ has helped in many ways, and I think that a little blurring of the lines between TV and Movies could benefit both sides.

The key is developing a pattern. There's and old Southern saying, "You can't make chicken salad out of chicken s**t." Back in the day, George Lucas was able to make the best trilogy in the history of film, one episode at a time, because he was creating the universe from scrap. It can't be done that way anymore, by and large because of folks like us. The ST should have been written as one continuous story, then fleshed out as a Beginning, Middle and End. From that angle, Lucasfilm had 32 years to develop the story.
