It's been reported that Ubisoft Massive's open-world Star Wars video game, first announced in early 2021, could be arriving sooner than expected.

The report comes from Kotaku, who claim 'sources familiar with the company's plans' have shed some light on Ubisoft's slate of upcoming big releases. After announcing its largest operating loss in history last week, the publisher appeased investors by hyping up a number of triple-A projects such as Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora (also developed by Massive Entertainment) and the next Assassin's Creed. Still, they kept at least one major title for the next fiscal year in the dark, and that could be the as-yet-untitled Star Wars game.

Mind you, some of the site's sources claim the project hasn't locked down a tentative release window yet, so it could easily slip into the next fiscal year, which runs from April 2024 through March 2025. Given that the Avatar game already faced a major delay from 2022 to 2023 and still doesn't have a release date (that is expected to change next month though), an early 2024 slot for Massive's Star Wars game sounds like wishful thinking on the publisher's part. Moreover, if Avatar and Assassin's Creed Mirage turn out to be knockout hits, saving the huge Star Wars release -- which is said to be garnering really positive internal buzz -- for the next fiscal year would make the most sense.

The latest leaks (still unconfirmed) claim the game is similar in nature to No Man's Sky, with many star systems to explore and a lengthy but flexible story that focuses on player choice, including the customization of the main character. Whether it contains multiplayer elements or not remains a mystery, though we wouldn't be surprised, given Massive's background with The Division.

Ubisoft is expected to reveal more details about its upcoming release schedule on June 12, during its big summer showcase, so we'll keep an eye on any Star Wars news that might pop up there. While plenty of other big Star Wars video games are in development at the moment across a number of publishers besides Ubisoft, such as EA and Skydance New Media, the frontlines have been relatively quiet ever since the release of Star Wars Jedi: Survivor to glowing reviews last month. The Force appears to be strong with Lucasfilm Games so far.

I'll believe it when I see it. I'm still enjoying Assassin's Creed Mirage that came out in February, and the Prince of Persia: Sands of Time remake that came out in January 2021. Not to mention Skull and Bones, that was released well before 2020.

    Wait...

And hey, it's a healthy merging of the Star Wars license with Ubi development. Hope it doesn't drag me away from playing 1313 and the KOTOR remake. ;)

(ok, I'll stop now. I am, albeit cautiously, optimistic for what this game could be once/if it gets released).

This game, if ever released... will be released along side a new Star Wars film... marketing. I don't believe that it will be done by 2024... I'll believe it when I see it not getting excited till then...
