We are suposed to assume that Rey has no particular lineage and so mystery solved, but there's an important unsolved detail in TLJ:

young Ben Solo in the temple has the Skywalker lightsaber.

how does the saber goes from Ben's hands to Maz? this is the most important item of a jedi.

Maz said that was a good question for another time. if this question isn't answered it will be lame.

Ben's lightsaber went to Maz and then called Rey. And still today that saber represents in both movies that Rey and Kylo are two sides f the same coin. They both battle for its ownership.

The saber is shared when they are both in the same boat (Kylo kills Snoke and then Rey picks it up against the guards), and the saber splits in two when they become opposite again.

The film (before the children epilog) ends with a shot of the lightsaber.

If a protagonist is what moves a story forward, then this saber is at least co-protagonist of the film, and it remains a big mystery.

Agree. And I would like to see this part of the story in ep. IX. It wont.take long, 30 seconds.of.Maz explaining to Rey how Kylo or any other character retrieved from Bespin and how ended it up with Kylo will be ok to me. Hope JJ had this is mind.

Did he have the Skywalker saber though? Wasn't it just a random blue saber?

No, he doesn't have the Skywalker saber. The hilt is the same one as from his cross guard saber:

Correct me if I'm wrong though...

These little.details and red herring are things that make the movie even interesting to watch for a second time!

Nope, you’re spot on @NinjaRen ; I sharpened and lightened it up a little to make it a little more clear.

The thing that gives it away is the design at the bottom of the hilt matching up with the design at the bottom of Kylo’s crossguard hilt.

    Good catch, @NinjaRen :)

We will never be given the answer, on screen at least.

You guys are right, it wasn't the Skywalker saber the one he owned ! Shame on me to haven't seen that.

In the other hand, this is still a mystery unanswered, and I think if you put in a movie a character saying "this is a good question to be answered later" you can't just avoid it. Must be importanat !

I think this mystery along with the KoR is being held back for JJ’s movie. I expect Vader’s mask and Snoke’s story to get answers as well.

You think? I'd say Snoke's story might be fleshed out in books or comics, but I dont' think we are going to get much on him in film. Kind of like Darth Maul. He was set up to be a bad ass villain, then suddenly he dies and, in the films at least, you don't get anymore on him.

Perhaps. Though in regard to the powers Snoke introduced I think some comment could be made that’d give us an insight into he was.

I think the lightsaber may be a symbolic representation of the splitting, and then the joining, or healing, of both sides of the Force.

Perhaps things in the GFFA have be become too extreme, too in opposition, with the result being conflict. Maybe Rey and Kylo have come to find the middle path?

Having only viewed once, I could be wrong on this... but the saber ends up split in two after the Kylo/Rey 'moment' and we don't see it again for the remainder of TLJ do we? So, there's a question for me about is that really it for the lost/found/returned weapon, with Rey making her own blade for Episode IX or is Rey going to repair it?

Also, it could just be me being dizzy in the wake of first viewing, but doesn't Luke wield a blue blade on Crait rather than his green ROTJ weapon as seen in the temple flashback scenes?

The saber is seen @ the very end with Rey and Leia sitting in the falcon.

Luke wields the Skywalker blue saber in the battle scene yes.

As far as I remember now, it's the blue one on Crait.

Ok, just so I'm clear then... Luke has a 'projected' version of the Skywalker saber on Crait, but Rey has already rebuild the broken 'real' version by the time she and Chewie pick up the handful of remaining Resistance members.

    Thanks observant people!

I don't recall the Skywalker saber being rebuilt when we see it at the end of the film,IIRC it was still broken but Rey has it.

    Yeah, same.

By the way, has JCC been cooperating for you at all? The site's been down intermittently for me.

It wasn't rebuilt, we see it wrecked in Rey's hands... As to why Luke holds it, it remains a mystery to me, the only theory is that it is some kind of trick to put Ben out of control or intimidate him, knowing how much he wants it and everything else connected to Vader...
