So Ewan McGregor did a tiny bit of VO for TFA or they pulled sound clips from The PT .

    "These are your first steps"

This line is what makes me believe Rey was not at the Jedi Academy and this is her first experience with the Force. Of course it could have been someone saying it to her in the past but something about it made me feel like someone (Obi Wan?) telling her that she is now taking her first steps.

To be honest, I don't think there was anything in the movie that made me think Rey was at the academy or had any kind of existence beyond what we were made aware of - IE she was abandoned on Jakku as a child and that is all she has really ever known.
Any ability she has is innate and she is just discovering it.

They cut a lot out of this film. I heard from a friend who worked with a stuntman overseas who let slip that he played a storm trooper in OT armour, not resistance armor on Episode VII, take this with a grain of salt for it could be B.S. I thought I would see some but I was surprised to see no real flashbacks in the film. A long with all the dialogue and other things in the trailers that were not in the movie, there must be at least a half hour to an hour of deleted scenes.

@Get In Gear; I'm compelled to agree. While possible, I did not see anything in the film that lead me to believe Rey has or is moonlighting as a Jedi. The powers seem to be innate, and as the title implies, they have been awakened.

Am I the only one who caught what sounded like a Alec Mcguiness voiceover yelling "Rey"?

    Shes a Kenobi yall.

Edit: I see others noticed as well.

@Longstar; This has been confirmed to be Ewan McGregor, but still Obi-Wan.

I agree. The Force Awakens. I remember reading somewhere that JJ said it would be obvious why the movie was titled that. Now having seen the movie, the force appears to awaken in Rey.

    Hello, new member. :)

I have some information about the flashback voices you may be interested to learn about. I am unsure if I can post a link to what I've read, so I'll repeat it briefly here:

I can confirm that Frank Oz went to Bad Robot in LA to record new Yoda dialogue for this Rey flashback scene.

Ewan McGregor also recorded some lines too, then afterwards casually rode off on his motorcycle!

I can also confirm Sir Alec Guinness's recorded voice was used and says "Rey", it was some clever editing work. In the 'A New Hope' scene where Ben/Obi-Wan arrives and finds Luke unconcious and R2-D2 hiding in the canyon wall, Ben says to R2-D2 "come here my little friend, don't be afraid". The word "afraid" was edited/cut to get the name "Rey" .

    Hope this answers some questions!

It's from the Entertainment Weekly article.
I think Ewan did the "These are your first steps" line.

You've taken your first steps is Ewan McGregor's voice.
Rey is very clearly Alec Guiness.
    I hear Yoda...

and I hear a faint woman's call "Anakin" twice

In the flashback it sounds like little Rey saying either mom or dad come back. Although it may just be repeating the word"back" I can't tell

I am obsessed with the flashback scene.

Also there in an interview with JJ he said they found Alec saying the word"Afraid" and mixed it with Ewan saying Rey

We get this LOST guy doing SW and now we're all here scrambling for crumbs left in a flashback. Or maybe it was a flash-forward. I wish flashes got the same treatment as montages... cop-outs used in weak story-telling. Tis the quick and easy path.......the dark side

    Movie was good.

Watching it a third time, i can't help but feel that the flashback scene only happened and Luke's lightsaber only called for her after she decided to stay and do what is right.

Anyone else got that feeling? if she did go with Finn she would never heard of the Saber again or the Resistance, Jedi and Sith, is like right there she chooses her path even not knowing it.

It would have been cool if when Rey first picked up the blue light saber, she immediately morphed into the scene where Vader cuts Luke's hand off then the saber still lit, falls down the huge shaft.
Like the popular theory that your eyes record-document images of the last 6 seconds of your life. ;)

The saber scene was so brief & jumbled it would be hard to clearly break down who said what.
I'm thinking Yoda, Obi Wan & maybe Maz were used. The young girl on Jakku watching the ship might have been a flashback.
I think the Jedi Academy massacre bit is deleted-edited footage that KK/JJ/Disney decided not to use that early in the story. It would have shown Luke & maybe Ben(Kylo Ren).

A good catch. I read somewhere in the forum speculation that it is also tied to Rey facing her fear, that is, being abandoned (and she must be feeling that way after Finn left). This theory rings true as well, so maybe it is both of them?

“The idea of the voices was, we wanted the audience to feel – but not necessarily be presented right in your face — this idea that familiar, Force-strong voices were connecting with her. At least as well as they could.”

The vision is just the Force calling to Rey. Maz explains as much to her.
Think of the voices as the voice of the Force itself. It is, perhaps, not so easy to explain the imagery:
    - We see Bespin, where Vader revealed he was Luke's father and the lightsaber was lost.
    - The Knights of Ren are slaughtering "the clan".
    - Luke leaves Artoo behind following the slaughter.
    - Rey is being left behind on Jakku by her parent(s).
    - Rey is confronting Kylo Ren on Starkiller.

To me it is simply about destiny. Rey's past, Luke's past, Kylo Ren's past, the lightsaber's past - they are all coming together in the future. That is what it boils down to...
