As a WWII military aircraft/navy AND SW fanatic, thought I would have a little fun and come up with the closest "WWII equivalent" to the SW spacecraft, looking for everyone's inputs and thoughts:

    • X-Wing - Definitely the P-51 Mustang - sleek, fast, maneuverable. Best all-around spacecraft in SW, like the P-51 in WWII. Another good fit would be the Spitfire.
    • Y-WIng - The P-47 Thunderbolt of SW. Slower, not as maneuverable, but heavily armed and built like a tank. Also, as a Y-Wing fanatic, I find it "irksome" that the X-wing gets all the credit....kind of like the P-51 in WWII!!! Another fit would be the Hawker Hurricane - much like the Spitfire/X-Wing getting all the credit!
    • A-Wing - Tough one. Might have to go Russian on this one - the Yak-3 or Lavochkin LA-11 were both fast, small fighters. Tough to come up with an AMerican equivalent- maybe the P-38 Lightning.
    • B-Wing - B-26 Marauder. Light bomber, relatively fast. Or the P-61 Black Widow - tough and hard hitting with a lot of firepower.
    • U-Wing - Maybe the B-25 (but I was saving that for the Millenium Falcon).....was going to say C-47 as they dropped paratroops but the U-wing is also nicely armed (C-47's weren't)
    • Tie Fighter - Easy. Japanese Zero or German ME-109 - small, fast, maneuverable but not very tough, could not take punishment
    • Tie Bomber - German Heinkel HE-111 - medium bomber.
    • Vader's Tie Fighter - German Focke Wulf FW-190 - best all around Axis fighter of the war
    • Millenium Falcon - B-25J model with the 75mm gun in the nose and 8 machine guns. Fast, heavily armed.
    • Star Destroyer - Yamato class battleship. Huge. Well armed and armored.
    • Profundity (Modified MC75 cruiser) - Maybe the Iowa class battleship - or a larger cruiser
    • Hammerhead Corvette - US Fletcher class destroyer - well armed, fast, manueverable.....
    Thoughts? Additions? Changes?.......

Great topic here a few of my inital ideas

A Wing could be a ME 163 Komet. Very fast & lightly amoured

B WING for me would be a tank buster mosquito.

Vaders Tie howith about the ME 262. from a looks point of view it's unmistakeably plus it fast & packs quite a punch.

Will be back later with more ideas.

Great inputs agree with you on the A and B wing - Vaders TIE though concerned you make it too formidable equating to ME262.....u think Vader's TIE was faster than an X wing?

Well it kept up with luke's x wing fairly easily plus I always got the impression Vader's tie was the best the empire could offer him & the ME 262 was a beast of a plane. Thankfully buy the time in went into mainstream production the allies had caused significant damage to both the manufacturer & logistics structure of the axis that mention it did not have the impact it could have.

Agreed on the -262. You know you can get a ride in one.....https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RYXd60D_kgQ.
They took original plans and built a brand new -262, using J-85 engines (from the T-38). Did you also know that the original Jumo 004 engines in the -262 had a mean time between failure of about 8-10 hours initially. So on your 3rd or 4th sortie one or both of your engines would basically come apart.

That ride looks fantastic. So much for German reliablitythough they were pushing the team has barrier pretty hard.
The ME 163 was prone to blowing up on landing if it had any Duke on board so you had to run it dry then glide it into land.
The U Wing is a tough one because WW2 transport aircraft weren't normally armed as they had ether fighter escorts or were used to land trops behind enamy lines I.E D DAY when it was a covert mission. The best example would be a converted bomber I e a Wellington or Lancaster.

If we take in some of the non production aircraft then there were some total nut's German prototypes at the end.

I offer the Spitfire as an A-Wing equivalent. It was more maneuverable than the P-51, Yak-3, etc. If you allow a later modification, then you can compare the AC-47 to the U-Wing.

Another A wing would be the Hawker Tempest. It was a lat comer to the war effort but was the fastest propeller plane at low levels of the War it was also very effective at intercepting the V1 rockets.

Light, the P-40, while it looks awesome with the shark teeth, was not epic enough to be the X Wing.....P-40 would make a good ARC-170.....or maybe Luke's T-16 which he used to bulls-eye womp rats.

Light Savior - Why yes! I have been building models since I was around 12/13 yrs old. Here are some recent models that my boys and I completed, check them out. I am teaching them how to build, below we have a KV-1 Russian Tank, an M-47 Patton US Tank, an ME-262 German Jet Fighter from WWII and a US P-47 Thunderbolt from WWII. And of course note the bedspread......JOIN THE RESISTANCE!!!!

I've been known to build SW/WW2 model mashups, and I equated the Slave I with the Heinkle He 111. Of course I added some Junkers Ju.88 inspiration. Also my version of the A-wing was an F-4 Wildcat. I chose that becase of the folding wings, it made it easier to imagine it as an A-wing. Also the wildcat was the answer to the Japanese Zero, which I equated to the TIE interceptor.
I would say a y-wing would be closer to the p-38 as far as design, with the split tail section

Welcome to the thread and thanks! Interesting comparisons.....I believe the US answer to the Zero was actually the F6F Hellcat....

After getting into SW legos, I want to try model making. I purchased a tie-fighter from my comic shop. I got an airbrush from art school so I will buy the paints soon.

Very nice @Rogues1138 !!! I used to be pretty good with an airbrush in my younger days. They are just so darn hard to clean...
