I was watching AOTC on tv just now and noticed the planet's geographical features that I've never noticed before:

Tattooine has ICE on small parts of it. My thinking is that Tattooine is just like Mars.

Tattooine once had a thriving system of life with greenery and/or a Hoth type of system but had some sort of global warming event and scientists/republic have started a process to erase it thousand of years ago...which is the reason the planet is even habitable to begin with.

    What are your theories
    ?

I'm ashamed to admit it, but It's been a while since I've seen AOTC. Where was there ice?

It's not uncommon for hot planets to also experience extreme cold as well. Our own Mercury has extremes of hot and cold. So too does our moon. So even though they are baked by the sun, ice can still form and persevere.

Planets with an atmosphere are different, because they can contain the heat for much longer amounts of time before it radiates back out into space. Tatooine, being a planet that orbits two suns, is hot. Its atmosphere keeps it hot, even at night. While I don't know the specifics of Tatooine's orbit, or the specifics of its suns, this makes it quite different from Mars.

Mars is described as a desert, but it is cold. Daytime temperatures can reach tolerable levels, but only at the equator and in summer at some locations. It's only theory, but it's thought that earlier on in Mars' history it had a thicker atmosphere that could contain heat (greenhouse effect) and provide an environment suitable for life. But now its atmosphere is a shell of its former self. Mars' small size meant that it did not have the magnetic field necessary to ward off the solar wind. The solar wind ate away at the atmosphere until almost nothing is left. It's a desert in deep freeze.

Perhaps what you're seeing is a salt flat or other mineral deposit? We'd definitely see that on deserts on Earth (where this was filmed.... obviously). Otherwise, I don't see much similarity between Mars and Tatooine.

yeah...so like salt flats like we have in some places on earth? I'm not trying to argue but a picture isnt making me understand any better. I was asking you to explain

Yeah I was thinking that could also potentially be what it is.
It looks almost like receding ice.

When I say like "mars" I meant in the speculation of the history of how it got to its current state.

Why are you asking if you get the analogy right.I can't explain it because we don't have seen anything else then the hot dry desert it was portrayed, maybe there are cold places maybe not, this is left open, and Star Wars doesn't go that deep into Science.

    I see clouds.

But Mars has slowly frozen, while Tatooine has baked. If anything, Tatooine seems to have heated up... but I don't know of any kind of canon description of its geologic history.

Looks more like clouds, which make sense if you have all farms with water evaporators. If there was ice you would harvest it directly.

Well that's why it's called "Speculation."
