I went yesterday to watch Ultron and nope, no TFA trailer attached.

So, I just saw Avengers Age of Ultron at the theatre. At my great surprise, the second TFA teaser was shown before the start of the movie–in 3D! (it looked AWESOME). I live in Montreal, hence the teaser was in french–this, you'll see, is important. When Luke says "You have that power too", the translation was "Vous avez ce pouvoir". This implies a great deal.

Indeed, in french, the usage of "you" is much more complex than in English. Here's a brief explanation I found online: "The words tu and vous both mean you. In English, the word you can be used to address any person or number of people, whatever the age, social status etc of that person. In French, which word for you is used depends on the person being addressed (spoken/written to)".

In French, "tu" implies familiarity, closeness, intimacy. You wouldn't address your boss, for instance, by using "tu", you'd go for a more formal approach.
This is what "vous" serves for, to underline either plurality (if dressing multiple individuals), differing statuses (hierarchy) or unfamiliarity (meeting a stranger).

Hence, the fact Luke's "you" was translated to "vous" implies a lot. Either he is addressing multiple individuals (Rey and Finn, or even the audience) which is discussable given only Daisy Ridley was sighted in Ireland on the Skellig Island set, or he is talking to someone he does not yet know: Rey.

Maybe I'm overthinking this, but somehow I'm sure Luke either doesn't initially recognize Rey, or has never met her altogether. Perhaps she was not at his academy, too young at that time, and only her brother was there (Kylo). She, believing he had been killed, decided to part from the jedi ways. Just speculation worth considering.

I've always been fascinated by languages' significance. It's shocking to see how words can lead one way or the other.

I wonder about this, too. What was the French translation of the original incarnation of this line, when he was talking to Leia? Presumably, whatever was said there should have been said here, too. Or, maybe the vous is due to the fact that the translator had no idea who Luke was talking to. Or, maybe there's a different meaning.

 

Well I read in a paper yesterday stated Jar Jar was the most hated character in the franchise, but that clip was funny especially....... nah I shouldn't tell let everyone else watch it.

 

However, it is possible the translator was only given the lines to translate and knows nothing about the film and therefore opted for 'vous' to play it safe.

 

Darn... I've just managed to debunk my own theory... Just rematch the french version of RotJ... Sure enough, luke refers to Leia as "vous". It is only after he tells her he is her brother that the "tu" becomes omnipresent. Oh well...

3D version of the trailer showed before Ultron 3D at a Regal theater in North Carolina last Saturday. It was definitely nice to not only see it on the big screen finally, but also to get to see it in a format (3D) that I don't think I would be able to find at home.

 

That is mega awesome! I want a recording of that score without the dialogue and sound effects soooooo bad.

 

Really, I only saw it on the regular screen when watching the Avengers movie, good to know.

Thanks for the welcome, I go to a couple of different Star Wars sites and I really like the set up of this new place here. I am a big time Original Trilogy fan, so It was cool when I noticed this post was on page 77... ha. I am the one who made that video from Star Wars Celebration... hmm so about that 10 seconds after I seen Han... well... anyways...when I got my picture with Carrie Fisher I think I lucked out with the pose I got. Thanks again.

 

I know this is for the force awakens but I loved this trailer when it came out and really learned a lot about the movie. With han and chewie going onto the falcon it was just so epic. Brought back star wars. The first trailer was ok but this was baller. I feel that it was kind of the same situation now with The Last Jedi because the first trailer, meh, next trailer blew up a house. That's just my ramblings, keep having fun.
