One of the biggest gripes I have about the direction of the Disney led Star Wars franchise is the strange disappearence of classic and prequel era aliens. For instance, in episode 7 there wasn't a single rodian, twilek, wequey, trandoshian, etc. These species are incredibly iconic and it shocks me that with the advances in technology within the last 36 years (or 11 years depending on how you look at it), Lucasfilm has decided to create new species instead of improving the old ones. That's not to say that new species are inherently bad, in fact I think one of the few things the prequels did really well was adding more diverse and unique species to the galaxy far, far away. While I enjoyed Episode VII's cantina scene, I think the creature design in some areas lacked the boldness and juxpositional nature that the original cantina scene, jabba's palace scene, and corescant street scenes did.
So why are we seeing a lot of brown monsters with big mouths? Why are we getting an enlarged Rocket Raccoon as the gunner of a U-Wing instead of literally anything else? Rogue One has too many humans in it already, which reduces some of the Star Wars identity, but to make the few aliens we do see entirely new species we've never heard of or seen before just seems like poor decision making and a huge miss. I like having established races in the Star Wars series, not token aliens. If Rogue One is the gritty war film it's been promised to be, then it would treat it's aliens with the same respect it would treat the humans. Not as some sideshow, as the main franchise tends to do, but as brothers in arms fighting together against the tyranny of the empire.

I was just mentioning to someone yesterday that I didn't see many (if any) aliens in the first trailer and very limited in the second trailer. I'll be a little disappointed if they don't come through with some more aliens, not to mention familiar ones.

It's about Jyn Erso stealing back the makeup case that the Empire took from her mother's purse.

I voted Rodians, because they were one of the first prominent species in ANH, and were common among the aliens of the PT. In one way, not seeing as many aliens kind of reflects the anthrocentricity of the first two movies in the OT, so I get why we may not be seeing many.

Alternatively, think about it from a production designer's POV: You get the opportunity to work on a Star Wars movie, wouldn't you want to come up with a few new species to add to the universe rather than repeat what we've seen?

Why is it embarrassing? It was your plan the whole time, remember?

I don’t know if this guy actually is an alien, but he clearly loses his head while strolling the streets.

I agree, the one thing that seemed rather "off" about TFA (and for me, it hit the mark far, far more often than it missed) was the almost total lack of classic SW alien races, particularly in Maz's castle.

True, it's a big galaxy - far larger than Lucas sometimes made it seem. We're not going to see the same dozen or so creature races over and over again. However, IMHO there should at least be a few familiar faces popping up from time to time, particularly in spaceports and hidey-holes for shadier types like Maz had on Takodana.

Here's hoping that Rogue One and Episode VIII get us back to that.

You may have just uncovered the first plot hole in R1. And I'm not talking about the guy with the missing head.

I'd say the Crimson Corsair would be the best fit for Rouge One.

Great post my friend. I have been arguing this ever since the aliens from TFA were announced and I have gotten lots of grief for saying so. Just a few days ago I was talking about this on another post. One of the many things I love about the prequels is that when Lucas made them, he not only gave us tons of new aliens but he greatly expanded on the ones we already knew and loved and who were an integral part of the SW galaxy.

    !!!vvvvvvvvv.JPG

This gave us the feeling that we were back in the very same galaxy far far away. Like them or hate them, the prequels felt just like any other SW movie and it's alien species helped the new movies mech together with the old ones in a wonderful way but this was not the case with TFA.

TFA felt odd and different and for me it felt like a cool looking sci fi movie with some SW elements added to it. When I mentioned this and the lack of familiar aliens, people began to argue with me saying that TFA was in another part of the galaxy and that I couldn't expect to see the same species everywhere. I find that argument hard to swallow as SW has shown us from the start that apart from humans, SW has shown us that there were many alien species that were exploring the galaxy just as much as the humans were. The Duros are one of the oldest space exploring races in the SW universe and it's a no brainer that they would be around places like the systems where Jakku or Takodana were. Fans argued about my points but now that RO's trailer has been shown we can see that Disney is doing the same thing over again even when this movie is a prequel in the OT era were many of the familiar races should be present.

The new movies make it seem like if the House of Mouse just wanted to trash everything Lucas in order to make their own universe but this really sucks as those alien species are just as much a part of SW as Luke, Han or Leia. Now we seem to be getting one or two new creatures that have never been seen before and many look quite odd like if there wasn't much effort like before and the SW galaxy has just become a human fest. While not every single alien species that Lucas created were perfect, I have to admit that most of them were wonderful and they are WAY better than what we are getting now.

I said it once and I'll say it again:

Can NEVER EVER compete with this:

    Ok.

Now imagine you are a concept artist who was so inspired by SW as a youngster you decided to make a career chasing that.

One day, after spending your life honing your skills and pushing your talents and attending classes to improve your designs to the point where a company like Lucasfilm would hire you, you get told you will be on the team designing for a NEW SW film. How amazing!

And then they tell you to just use alien designs someone else already came up with.
