The animation looks cheap.

The characters' mouths don't even match up with the dialogue and textures are barely existent on anything, this looks really cheaply made for a Disney production. Can't Disney just let Filoni's team have a couple of months to get it looking more presentable?

I partially agree. It's certainly somewhat barebones in a sense when compared to TCW. To be honest, TCW sometimes had textures that looked overly painted. Sometimes I felt I could see individual brush strokes on a character's face for instance, but overall it was not too noticeable.

I think it's ok. I do wish they would mirror the style of TCW more, but at the same time I feel we're being a tad unfair for expecting it to be just like it. Hopefully progressive seasons might see a bit of a change in regards to production.

Yeah, the show looks crappy. As long as I'm mostly enjoying the stories I'll put it with the subpar visuals.

The thing that bothers me about TCW animation is that they took the traditional style animation of the Clone Wars mini-series and made it digital animation. Why didn't they just come up with a new animation style, I think it looked silly. I like the new style of Rebels better. I mean look at the last image, Obi-Wan actually has hair, not an orange triangle sticking off of his face.

it reminds me of samurai jack...and that makes since since i just looked it up lol. samurai jack and clone wars had the same art director and charachter desighner Scott Wills, and Genndy Tartakovsky(try saying that name 3 times fast).

I understand that the aesthetic of TCW characters was not based upon the original cartoon, but a conscious choice not to be realistic and instead to incorporate the sharp corners and chiseled look of wooden puppets. Rebels has traveled in the opposite direction, using softer curves which result in slightly infantile faces and 'pipe-cleaner' arms and legs.

the art direction I'm fine with. I like the nods to macquarrie. I'm more bothered by the always empty streets, the lack of unique digital extras and the sparseness of the details.

I agree, and there's no grit to it, none of the roughness we saw in A New Hope and Empire. Everything looks like it's been sanded down, smooth as a bagel. At least add some image noise.

Here's an example, here's the original screenshot:

And here's one where I added some subtle noise to it, looks better in my opinion (went a little bit overboard though):

P.S. It just struck me how painful it must be for her to put that helmet thing on.. What is that? Do the ears slot in first or does it come apart? Heh

Edit: Wait they're not ears, tentacle things..

Yeah, not sure why she wears that. Doesn't seem comfortable on her Lekku. The rest of the Twi'leks seem to let them flop about naturally.

I agree with this completely. the look and feel of the CW animation seems to me to be more thought out and not so "rushed". Animation can be achieved on a laptop at your kitchen table and to me rebels seems cheap in comparison to the CW, BUT as I have stated about the PT...it's part of the story so I enjoy it despite its animation failings. Millions have become absolutely engulfed in the EU (or "Legends" as it's now named) be merely reading books and have never seen it on the screen, but yet are furious at the de-canonization of their beloved books. Rebels, love it or hate it, is canon that you can SEE....enjoy the show.

They're working on an awful budget honestly...and they are purposely making it smoother.

It took me a while ringer used to TCW just because it looked so ridiculous.

That's one of the challenges when re-purposing character designs never intended to do anything more than chime with a specific environment or story function. Twi'leks were supposed to look shady and a little erotic for Jabba's Palace, and they don't quite look practical anywhere else - certainly, their heads are not configured for helmets etc, but then again they're not a realistic evolutionary result - the tentacles would require a thicker head and, well, the entire head and shoulder relationship would be different. We saw the same weird design adaptations when nonhuman X-wing pilots featured in the EU media - none of them looked comfortable in their helmets. SW isn't realistic, but some designs don't fly well when transposed. I don't like the idea of Hera being a Twi'lek to begin with; despite all the members of her species to have appeared since RotJ in heroic or civilian roles, they'll always be sneaky, slightly monstrous fang-toothed ne'erdowells to me ;)

As a person who grew up on Droids and the Ewoks, and classic animation in general,I like the way this looks.Bright, clear, and I think this cartoon looks more like Star Wars then the Clone wars series did.

I agree that Rebels is not the most aesthetically-pleasing Star Wars show. But again, I was saying the same thing back in 2008 when TCW started airing. Fact is, Filoni and his team did a GREAT job improving the graphics year after year.

The one thing Rebels is lacking, and I highly agree with @alex, is the lack of 1) environments 2)species 3)overall details 4)dirtiness. Everything is so clean, I would of liked Lothal to feel like Mos Eisley–scruffy, untidy, dangerous.

The exteriors on Rebels look great. Buildings, ship exteriors, landscapes, they all have a wonderfully cinematic look to them and benefit from the conscious attempt to emulate the work of McQuarrie.
The animation falls flat when it comes to characters. They all look overly geometric and too shiny/smooth.
I still like the overall look of Rebels more then Clone Wars, which I personally thought looked just awful.
    Just my .2 cents.

Did anyone else notice the animation lag up when the Inquisitor spun his lightsaber?

the animation looks cheap because the shows budget is a lot less compared to TCW.
