    Fear.

Given rumors suggesting “The Ancient Fear” may be the title to Episode VII, I did some digging and found some choice quotes that include the 4-letter F word. Many of these quotes can be used to strengthen or weaken whatever plotline you may have in your head for Episode VII. In any case, they all make for wonderful reading.

I’ve included some comments (in red) on how I think certain quotes can apply to rumors/theories we’ve been hearing. Feel free to throw your thoughts into the ring. Looking forward to them.

Fear cannot be without hope nor hope without fear. Baruch Spinoza, Ethics, Part III, definition 13: explanation (1677).
    Episode IV, meet Episode VII.

H.P. Lovecraft — 'The oldest and strongest emotion of mankind is fear, and the oldest and strongest kind of fear is fear of the unknown'

You can discover what your enemy fears most by observing the means he uses to frighten you. Eric Hoffer, The Passionate State Of Mind, and Other Aphorisms Section 222 (1955).
Luke may have to deal in the grey side, as many have speculated.

Religion is based, I think, primarily and mainly upon fear. Bertrand Russell, Why I Am Not a Christian (1927), "Fear, the Foundation of Religion".
The jedi treat the force as a religion. Is this then based on fear? Are all force followers a bit on the dark side?

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. Marianne Williamson, A Return to Love: Reflections on the Principles of "A Course in Miracles", Ch. 7, Section 3 (1992) P. 190.
Luke might be the most powerful jedi in the galaxy… but that may not be such a good thing.

You gain strength, courage and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You are able to say to yourself, "I lived through this horror. I can take the next thing that comes along." …You must do the thing you think you cannot do. Eleanor Roosevelt, You Learn by Living (1960).
More fodder for Luke forced (no pun int.) to do something out of character?

Fear makes us blind, and we touch each fear with all the avid curiousity of self-interest, trying to make a whole out of a hundred parts, like the blind men with their elephant. We sense the shape. Children grasp it easily, forget it, and relearn it as adults. The shape is there, and most of us come to realize what it is sooner or later: it is the shape of a body under a sheet. All our fears add up to one great fear, all our fears are part of that great fear - an arm, a leg, a finger, an ear. We're afraid of the body under the sheet. It's our body. And the great appeal of horror fiction through the ages is that it serves as a rehearsal for our own deaths. Stephen King, Night Shift, foreward.
Maybe Luke dies. Leaving a half-trained apprentice with a ragtag group of friends to deal with the aftermath of Episode VII? Remember the rumor claiming Luke would absorb enormous amounts of dark side energy to save everyone… but then be changed…

Fear is an emotion that makes us blind. How many things are we afraid of? We're afraid to turn off the lights when our hands are wet. We're afraid to stick a knife into the toaster to get the stuck English muffin without unpluggin it first. We're afraid of what the doctor may tell us when the physical exam is over; when the airplane suddenly takes a great unearthly lurch in midair. We're afraid that the oil may run out, that the good air will run out, the good water, the good life. When the daughter promised to be in by eleven and it's now quarter past twelve and sleet is spatting against the window like dry sand, we sit and pretend to watch Johnny Carson and look occasionally at the mute telephone and we feel the emotion that makes us blind, the emotion that makes a stealthy ruin of the thinking process. Stephen King, Night Shift, foreward (1978).
The daughter line got me thinking… as a parent myself, I can relate to being worried about my kids. A lot. And it doesn’t subside until your kids are well into their adult lives… but even then you worry about them. Seeing as how our three returning heroes will all likely be parents in the ST, that fear will be there. The kids… they’ve got targets on their backs from day one. Which won’t make their parents feel any better.

The only thing you fear is fearlessness.
The bigger the weapon, the greater the fear. R.E.M., Hyena (1986).
Supports the Sith homeworld as planet line of thinking… as far as being The Ancient Fear.

Darth Maul, promotional clip for Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace (1999).

Fear is the path to the Dark Side. Fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate, hate leads to suffering. Yoda in Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace (1999).

I've grown certain that the root of all fear is that we've been forced to deny who we are. Frances Moore Lappé, O Magazine, (May 2004).
“I am a Sith. Like my father before me.” Just sayin’.

He who has overcome his fears will truly be free. · Aristotle, Quoted in Florilegium by Joannes Stobaeus

Early and provident fear is the mother of safety. Edmund Burke, speech on the petition of the Unitarians, House of Commons (May 11, 1792); in The Works of the Right Honorable Edmund Burke (1899), vol. 7, p. 50.

(Exodus 20:5)--"You shall not worship them or serve them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, on the third and the fourth generations of those who hate Me,"

From this arises the question whether it is better to be loved rather than feared, or feared rather than loved. It might perhaps be answered that we should wish to be both: but since love and fear can hardly exist together, if we must choose between them, it is far safer to be feared than loved. Niccolò Machiavelli, The Prince, Chapter 8 (1513).

Let me assert my firm belief that the only thing we have to fear is fear itself—nameless, unreasoning, unjustified terror which paralyzes needed efforts to convert retreat into advance. Franklin D. Roosevelt, inaugural address (March 4, 1933); in The Public Papers and Addresses of Franklin D. Roosevelt, 1933 (1938), p. 11.

No man is liberated from fear who dare not see his place in the world as it is; no man can achieve the greatness of which he is capable until he has allowed himself to see his own littleness. Bertrand Russell, Dreams and Facts (1919).

The fear of death is more to be dreaded than death itself. Publilius Syrus, Maxims, No. 511 (100 BC).

Best safety lies in fear. William Shakespeare, Hamlet (1600-02), Act I, scene 3, line 43.

    Imagination frames events unknown,
In wild, fantastic shapes of hideous ruin,
And what it fears creates. Hannah More, Belshazzar, Part II.

It is tormenting to fear what you cannot overcome. Ausonius, Septem Sapientum Sententiæ Septenis Versibus Explicatæ, VII. 4.

Fear in the world first created the gods. Statius, Thebais, III. 661.

The title "The Ancient Fear" definitely threw me for a loop. I looked at it at just face-value, which meant to me that it was some type of ancient Sith lord or something. But your post put a different spin on it for me, since fear was mentioned as a concept that initially drove force-sensitive users to the dark side. So now I'm looking at the title with a slightly different perspective that sort of just generalizes the concept of the dark side.

Ironically I just realized if indeed they go with The Ancient Fear, it will likely be referring to one entity (on a base level) if we follow the naming convention used in the first chapters of the OT and the PT.

A New Hope was Luke first, the sentiment of hope for the rebellion second. Sorta intertwined.

The Phantom Menace was Sheev Palpatine. Don't see a second meaning... Maybe the slow fall of the jedi for mixing religion with politics, but that's a reach.

So The Ancient Fear will be an entity, be it human, clone, force user, or force ghost. It's just infinitely more fun to look at what it could mean in the broader sense though, esp. in regards to our returning trio.

I've argued elsewhere on these boards that the Ancient Fear won't be an entity for entirely the same reasons. The New Hope that led to the Return of the Jedi was a person (Luke); the Phantom Menace to the stability of the galaxy that led to the Revenge of the Sith was also a person (Palpatine). To set up a new trilogy also focused on a person (or entity, to use your terminology) would send things off balance, in my opinion. We've had the story of the person who brought chaos and we've had the story of the person who restored order: what we need now is a story about what chaos and order actually mean in differing contexts; a more philosophical approach, which is what we've been promised.

This is, of course, only my opinion though.

I would disagree... my understanding is that the "phantom menace" was the threat to the senate, which existed only because it was being orchestrated from within the senate, which would cause Palpatine to be elected chancellor

For my part, taking into assumption that the title is Ancient Fear, is that one person is not enough to instill fear into an entire galaxy... it would be the destabilizing force that led to the fall of the Old Republic...

Someone (and I wish I could find it and give credit) made the point that the fear may be of instability in general, that the galaxy is spiraling out of control with nobody to save them. For a thousand years there has been peace, more or less. The Republic ruled until an altercation brought forth the Empire, but the transition was swift. People's lives, more or less, were unaffected. They were protected by the Republic, then they were protected by the Empire. Now both are gone, and while the new Republic has not yet solidified its control, and the Empire has not totally faded away, there is, for the first time in thousands of years, instability...

The Ancient Fear doesn't feel like a catchy title or even one that impresses you initially... but at least it feels like there's some distinct story that comes along with it. I like that it springs up some curiosity and has some roots to the previous stories.

I'm rooting for this title to survive over the other choices, especially Shadows of the Sith, which I feel is a little bland and obvious for my taste.

I think Ancient Fear is as good as Phantom Menace. Better even, as it doesn't have the lip-smacking alteration in the middle (phant-om-enace...?!) It works for the saga, too, I think. I see the saga panning out something like this:

    The Phantom Menace
    Attack of the Clones
    Revenge of the Sith
    A New Hope
    The Empire Strikes Back
    Return of the Jedi
    The Ancient Fear
    Galaxy in Turmoil
    Balance to the Force

(Obviously the last two are my best guesses and will be way off, but we haven't had 'Force' in a title yet and after one trilogy ending with mention of the Sith and another the Jedi I suspect the last will resolve the two with Force. Just a hunch.)

Well there has to be some title... "Star Wars VII: The blast's about to get real" just wont work....

Seriously, I think we are about to see a major threat on a level well beyond Palpatine and his Empire. Our heroes have already handled that. Yes, I think this will be about family, and the moralistic choice of right and wrong... But I think it will play out against a deep threat.

What I think we will see at the climax of the first movie of the trilogy is something that will rock people back on their heels, and make the audience wonder again if the Alliance will be able to survive

Thank goodness. Most of them are B-tier... may be okay for games but not the films. At first glance I thought they were designs for horrible licensed T shirts.

I think it's logical to suspect that "Force" would make it into one of the titles in the ST. The OT referenced Luke's destiny quite frequently so I would also suspect that "Destiny" would fit in a title. IMO I think it fits best in EP7 as we have yet to identify what Luke's ultimate destiny is. The title Bound by Destiny could point us in the direction of Luke needing to make a difficult choice/sacrifice to succeed where others before him have failed. The destiny of the Sith and Jedi will be determined by Luke's choices right, wrong, or otherwise.

    The Phantom Menace
    Attack of the Clones
    Revenge of the Sith
    A New Hope
    The Empire Strikes Back
    Return of the Jedi

On another thread (which I would link to or at least give the author some acknowledgement if I could remember which thread it was) someone quoted George Lucas as saying the prequels were supposed to "rhyme" with the originals. When I saw Wayne's list I realized the titles of the two trilogies actually do correspond with each other:

The Phantom Menace - A New Hope: Both are three word titles. Both focus on opposite emotions, hope and menace. Both "hope" and "menace" can be used as nouns and as verbs or nouns, and both are feelings. Each title uses one adjective to describe the opposite emotion. Each hints at a Force sensitive individual.

Attack of the Clones - The Empire Strikes Back: Both are four word titles. The noun in each, "Empire" and "clones", are nearly synonymous, as are the verbs "attack" and "strikes". Neither hints at the Force, but both identify participants in the attack/strike.

Revenge of the Sith - Return of the Jedi: Certainly I'm not the first to notice the similarities here. The two titles are nearly identical in meter and order. Each title emphasizes a side of the Force.

Now let's assume that George Lucas' influence over the upcoming feature films is still significant enough that the pattern he's established in the PT and OT continues into the ST. What can we expect the titles to be if the pattern continues?

I majored in mathematics and minored in English, and I'm a Star Wars fan, so this is exactly the kind of puzzle I'd dedicate my life to solving. As young Anakin would say, "Yipee!" Here we go!

Episode VII: A three word title with an adjective describing a word that defines both a character in the story and an emotion, while hinting at the Force.

Episode VIII: A four word title with a combat related verb, no reference to the Force, and a noun that identifies a major participating team or party in the combat.

Episode IX: A four word title, very possibly containing the word "Force" and perhaps even "______ of the Force"

So how do Wayne's predicted titles fit into my hypothesis?

The Ancient Fear: A three word title with an adjective describing a word that defines both a character in the story and an emotion, while hinting at the Force.

That's a good fit! Definite possibility if the naming pattern continues.

Galaxy in Turmoil: A four word title with a combat related verb, no reference to the Force, and a noun that identifies a major participating team or party in the combat.

Again, another good fit! Perhaps adding the word "The" or "A" before "Galaxy" to increase the word count to four. Another definite possibility..

Balance to the Force: A four word title, very possibly containing the word "Force" and perhaps even "______ of the Force"

Wayne, can I take you to Vegas and let you pick the horses?

p.s. Please feel free to slap me with a Jar Jar for quoting Jake Lloyd's most infamous line.

I think you make some valid points...

I am not sure that the titles were deliberately spaced by the number of words, but anything is possible... my take on it would be that The Phantom Menace and A New Hope were both call to action titles which describe the overall arc, the former being the plot which will cause the Emperor to be elected, and the later being the story of an opposition to the Empire.

Attack of the Clones and Empire Strikes Back both cover the escalation of the conflict

Revenge of the Sith and Return of the Jedi are the climaxes... the fulfillment of the arc set out in the first movie

I don't really read any more into it than we would have a conflict, it will escalate, and then conclude...

Lucas, however, has some strange habits, and it is potential that you are absolutely correct...
