Has anyone else noticed that the two large, overpowered, giant grey ships in the most recent second episodes of the Star Wars and Star Trek "reboot series" movies were both called Dreadnoughts? JJ has obviously had his hand in both of these franchises... (and Rian Johnson easily could have used this element from JJ Abrams' original script for Episode VIII) - or is it just a coincidence?

They also both don't survive the film.

Probably just a coincidence...right? - but still interesting.

Guys simply found out the 100 years old term Dreadnaught and are thinking its cool.It is cool.

Dreadnaught is an navy designation for type of most haevy battleship in the fleet that carries largest guns . (upon British HMS Dreadnaught which was built before World War 1 and was first of its kind)

    Video:
US Navy Dreadnaught Iowa, last of its kind in the world, now retired , delivering salvos form its 406 mm caliber guns (every shell weighted around one tonn).

What @McDiarmid said. A Dreadnaught is a type of ship. So is a Frigate, a Cruiser, a Destroyer, and a Corvette.

Ever notice how the vehicles in both Star Wars and Pirates of the Caribbean are both called "ships"? :p

But in all seriousness, the Cannady Dreadnought was likely given that class because of its large, Resistance Base destroying canons on its belly. It's basically a giant canon, not unlike the large guns in the picture @McDiarmid shared.

I simply thought it was an interesting fact, and that the blatant labeling lacks a bit of creativity (giant overpowered, over-sized ships of similar type) considering these two concepts were in the second episodes of both series with both being operated by the enemy - and both fail fairly quickly due to overconfident commanders.

But yes, yes, the dreadnought is, of course, a well recognized piece of real world naval power (as are destroyers, cruisers, etc). It's just a funny coincidence, but definitely a bit unoriginal.

    ?

I never said anything about George Lucas being unoriginal.

I believe you misunderstood me, I was referring to the unoriginality of The Last Jedi using such a similar (identical) concept as Into Darkness.

It's become a very popular word to use in recent years. The video game Destiny also had a huge enemy ship called the Dreadnaught, and there is an entire game called Dreadnought too. As @McDiarmid said, it's a cool word that just happened to be rediscovered by multiple creative teams within a small time frame.

One is a class of ship and one is a name of a ship.

But JJ didn’t direct TLJ. It’s a coincidence not a trend.
