This is for discussion of the gangs, thugs, and scavengers of TFA. What purpose will they serve? How much screen time will they get? I'm especially interested in the Kanjiklub, Guavian Death Gang, and Sarco Plank and how they fit into the story. We have an idea from the MSW "Synopsis" for what the Kanjiclub and Death Gang are up to. Are there too many of these groups and types of characters?

"Tasu Leech leads the notorious Kanjiklub gang, an intergalactic criminal organization."

"The security soldiers of the Guavian Death Gang wear high impact armor that makes them stand out among other deadly criminals."

"Unkar's Thugs: The strong-armed bullies who work for junk dealer Unkar Plutt help keep his scavenging business running on the remote, lawless world of Jakku."

"Sarco Plank: A scavenger and trader who scours frontier worlds for riches, Sarco Plank must wear a specialized mask that keeps his native atmosphere circulating through his alien lungs."

"Teedo is a small, brutish scavenger that roams Jakku’s vast wasteland on his semi-mechanical Luggabeast."

And that's likely all in the first act. We also have the scum and villainy of Maz's castle.

Great topic. This has puzzled me to . We know that some of them will provide action scenes. How much will be explained ?

If i am to do some of the cuff speculation i think Unkar and his Jakku crew work under the Kanjiklub who are "notorious" and "intergalactic" . He pay tribute to them and in turn receives "protection". They visit Jakku to collect their pay and somehow they are in possession of the Falcon . Rey and Finn steals the falcon and end up at the freighter where Han is perhaps doing some business with the Guavian Death Gang and all hell breaks loose.

Perhaps one or more of these factions will show up again in later Episodes similar to the Jabba/Han story arc.

I know who i will put my money on though. I mean come on , look at these guys!!

I like that so Rey steals the falcon from an intergaltic pirate gang Han would be proud apart from the fact that she then leads them unintentionally into one of his deals oh that`s going to be a good few scene Rey, Finn, Han & Chewie against several different pirate gangs it will be just like old times for him.

My condolences to all the victims of the Paris attack

I wonder if Solo got a tip on where the Falcon is, and if either gang has something to do with him getting that info. Maybe Han is doing a job for one of them in order to find the Falcon, then it all goes south when Finn and Rey take it.

Another theory i have is that Jakku junk market is probably a very good place to start if you want to find old parts for very old ships.Anyone who owns a vintage car or bike knows what a problem this can be.

I'm admittedly a bit confused by the piracy aspect regarding Maz Kanata.

The criminal element of Jakku is to be expected because Jakku is basically just "NotTatooine", it's like poetry, etc, etc.

I don't understand the connection between Maz and the pirates though, considering she's being built up as this enlightened figure in the Force; sort of a Yoda-esque character or whatever. The idea of a mystic of the Force condoning piracy with all that entails (murder, pillaging, etc.) is just baffling and I'm interested to see how it's going to play out on-screen. Maybe they're heroic pirates who exclusively steal from the rich and give to the poor, or who target the First Order?

The MSV synopsis is so sketchy in this part of the story. I mean all respect and thanks to MSV and so on but i think there are giant holes here. The gangs are united ? They jump to hyperspace and are then sucked in by a tractor beam ?

.....But Rey knows these ruins, and she leaves the TIEs behind. The Falcon jets off into space, and loses its pursuers, probably by jumping to hyperspace....

......We return to Rey and Finn on the Millennium Falcon. Either via tractor beam or their own choice, they are swallowed up by a Giant Freighter in space. Into the belly of another beast. The ship lands in a cavernous hangar bay. They open the door, and there at the bottom of the ramp is Han Solo and Chewbacca! Han orders the kids off his ship. They refuse. Han and Chewie enter the ship and confront Finn and Rey. BB-8 hides in the back. Suddenly, an alert pops up in hologram form. Two competing gangs of ruffians approach the Falcon and they are temporarily united! Han asks the kids to hide in the storage bay. The gangs confront Han and Chewie, and they seem to be in trouble. Rey tries to help by releasing the ship’s cargo (which appears to be livestock, potentially giant space pigs). This provides a distraction. But the released creatures grab Finn and Rey is forced to chase them down and free Finn from the beasts’ clutches. A fight ensues between the heroes and the gangs. Rey almost single-handedly takes on the gangs using her skills with a staff. Han fires back, but Chewie is wounded in the fight. Finn helps Chewie, and wins some respect from Han Solo in the process. They all rush back into the Falcon. Han gets behind the controls, with Rey in the copilot seat. When the Falcon won’t start, Rey manages to tinker with it and the fix the ship, earning the stowaways more respect from Captain Solo. As Chewie recovers in the back, they jet out of the freighter, crashing into some of the livestock on the way out but still managing to escape from the gangs.....

    United gangs?

Maybe Han is after the Kanjiklub, who stole the Falcon, and the Death Gang are after Han for something else. They both are then united in fighting Han when they get to the freighter, which is what Han is using.
Not sure how Finn and Rey get away from the FO and then end up near Han. Unless Han was over Jakku and pursued them into hyperspace. Or they get into space and the freighter picks them up and it goes into hyperspace to lose the FO.

I feel you. But it wouldn't be without precedence.

    Not a bad idea!

Perhaps the creation of Maz Kannata was a bit inspired by the character Tia Dalma from the Pirates of the Caribbean series ? A powerful mystic/pirate who is in fact the goddess Calypso trapped in human form . ;)
