What do you think ? Critically acclaims. Audience thinks the movie is amazing, cinemacore rating.

So will it go above 2 billions? Better than TFA?

I loved the movie, but I doubt I'll see it as many times as TFA. It was the first Star Wars film in over a decade. This will make more than RO, but less than TFA.

I don't think it will beat TFA. The first chapter of each trilogy is always que one that makes more money.

And I am not sure that the audiences thinks that que film is amazing...a lot of fans didnt like it.

The film has an A cinemascore. The vast majority of people/critics loved the film. We're just seeing the initial meltdown over story choices that didn't mesh with head canon.

Yeah, I think these reactions we are seeing are just like the ones TFA received. And TFA ended being like the third biggest movie of all time.

TFA was well received by both critics and audiences. TLJ was well received by critics but got a mixed reception from audiences. I don't understand how these reactions are just like the ones TFA received.

The first week is always going to be crazy for a big movie like this. We have to wait until the second or third week before we see the effects of bad mouth-to-mouth.

That may be true, but there are still a lot of people that hated TFA for supposedly being ANH remake, Lucas not making it etc.

I saw TFA 5 times in theaters. I have no desire to watch this hot mess a 2nd time.

    Precisely.

People initially viewing the film in a poor light is giving the film more publicity, and - considering the great reception for both TFA and RO - could intrigue people enough to go see it as a result: wait, the critics think this is excellent but some of the the audience is extremely conflicted? I have to see what all of the fuss is about for myself! Etc.

Likewise, people who initially had poor impressions are hearing and seeing a lot of other people enjoy it, and, of course, everyone wants to be part of the conversation, so this could see spectacular repeat business, even if it comes short of TFA (which would probably still spell massive success anyways).

Off topic for a second, but I haven’t seen your opinion of the film anywhere yet, @DailyPlunge (might have missed it); what did you think of the film?

The only scientific measure of audience reception is the Cinemascore which is the same as TFA.

It's a lot to take in... I'm 38, so Luke is my hero so I feel like that overwhelmed the rest of the story. I just wanted to get through Finn/Rose story to get back to Luke. I'm going to see it again tomorrow. My first reaction was that I liked it, but it was a lot to process. I'll probably enjoy it a lot more the second time. Did you like it?

Second films in franchises tend to make less than the first. Maybe it'll creep past 2 bil, but probably not.

I foresee based on my own instincts, it making 80% of what TFA did.

TFA was THE long awaited return of SW. Everyone and their mother went to see it, usually more than once.

TLJ while a good film on its own merits, is the second chapter. It doesn't have that kick going for it.

I came out of my initial showing in the exact same position: I was clueless as to what to think of the film simply because, you’re right, there is so much to take in! I think that that depth (in terms of sheer volume) is one of a few things responsible for poor or confused initial reactions, because there’s just far too much to unpack. On top of that, it’s the first Star Wars film which, from my opinion, does away with the typical linear three act structure that we’ve all become so accustomed to, and flows more than it does jump from beat to beat.

However, my second viewing cleared a lot of that initial loss for words (quite literally) up for me, and I enjoyed the film so much more that second time around, and even more the third time around today.

I really, really love this film and the story that Rian chose to tell now. Whilst some are saying that it riffs off TESB and ROTJ a bit too literally at times, considering just how different the film is everywhere else, I think that it’s good to have those safe and familiar places to return to.

I hope that your second viewing helps your thoughts clear on the film! :)

No chance in my opinion it will make 2bill, I have it a 1.1-1.3 bill range now - word of mouth is just not that strong, I am trying to work out if I am in the minority or not. I will watch it again in the cinema for sure but right now I am not taken with it all, in fact I have not messaged ANY of my friends encouraging them to go see it.

I saw the movie 2 times and had tickets for 2 more screnings, but skipped these other 2 screenings, because I could not watch this movie again.

There are a ton of die hard star wars fans that would love any movie as long as its star wars.

No way this gets to 2 Billlion like TFA. They are losing repeat business from fans like me who hated the movie. I saw TFA 4 times, once is enough for me regarding TLJ.

Based on your opinion? The word of mouth scores on the film are super high.

There's a lot of generalizing going on here.

    What about real data:

I'm not sure the film will make $2 billion simply because this is the 3rd Star Wars film in 3 years and crowds are settling into the new normal. We'll have Solo trailer soon. I'm not going to see TLJ as many times as TFA, but I still love it.

While I don't think it will make more than TFA, I do it think it will at least come close to matching it.

It won’t come close to two billion worldwide and I think $750 domestic is realistically it’s ceiling.

This isn’t the crowd pleasing film that TFA was. Also, it’s extended run time will work against it. Beyond that, it is dividing audiences. At the moment it is only getting a 56 on Rotten Tomatoes.

While the film will be a massive hit it will fall well short of The Force Awakens
