I thoroughly enjoy Mr. Sunday Movies and Nick Mason's podcast the Weekly Planet and they released an in depth look at the first ever expanded universe novel Splinter of the Mind's Eye by Alan Dean Foster (well... the comic based on it). Their recap is hilarious and I hope you enjoy.

I'd still like to see it adapted into a canon story, just without such a heavy Leia/ Luke love plot and a more coherent and consistent with the rest of the saga story. Despite what we know, the Luke stories before ESB still have to deal with the fact that Luke has a wee bit of a crush on his sister. That can't be avoided.

Other canon novels have dealt with him seeking Jedi knowledge between ANH and ESB, so it would fit the established themes too.
