A lot of questions were brought up after this week's announcement that Jon Favreau will be directing the next Star Wars film,  titled The Mandalorian & Grogu, which will begin production this year. What is happening to season 4 of the Disney Plus show? We know who's directing, but who's writing it? Some of these may have been answered.

According to The Hollywood Reporter's Heat Vision newsletter, Favreau is not only directing but is also co-writing the script. Who is the other half of the writing credits? Well, Dave Filoni, of course. It's still unclear what exactly changed Lucasfilm's minds, as the trade is reporting that the plan up until the strikes was to make season 4 of The Mandalorian from the scripts Jon Favreau had written, which were already in the early stages of pre-production.

But the strikes changed everything, as Jeff Sneider put it back in December when he ignited the rumor of a Mandalorian movie coming instead of season 4. The status of the fourth season is unclear. We now know this is going to be the next Star Wars movie in theaters, but a date hasn't been specified yet. The Disney calendar currently has May 22, 2026, reserved for the franchise.

The StarWars.com announcement confirmed that all of the films announced at Celebration, including the Dave Filoni-directed culmination event, are still happening. THR reiterated this but added that it will come out after the also-announced Ahsoka season 2, which is Filoni's priority at the moment.

So what happens later? According to the trade, the future of The Mandalorian as a brand will depend on the box office performance of The Mandalorian & Grogu. If it succeeds, the continuation of the story could happen through sequels on the big screen, but there's always the possibility of going back to the smaller-scale Disney Plus format.

No production window has been given for the film. Ahsoka season 2 is in development, and we think it could potentially film as soon as this year, depending on the cast's schedule and how fast Dave Filoni can close those scripts. They are likely targeting a 2026 window.

Stay tuned as the situation continues to develop.

As with everything, success will hinge on the quality of the screenplay. FWIW, I believe Season 3 of Mando would have made a much better feature film than it did as the follow-up to Mando's blockbuster Seasons 1 & 2.

It would have tightened up the script and upped the quality of the special effects.
