He has no idea that Snoke exists. He's still a little shaky on Darth Vader being Luke's father, so we can't rush things. ;)

I kind of like the idea that after the fall of the Empire the New Republic is weak. That's by design. Some of this was discussed in more detail in Bloodline when Leia is trying to build The Resistance. Republic 2.0 didn't want to have a huge military after the Empire so that made the Outer Rim even a bigger Wild West than it was during the Empire. It's a philosophy question for the galaxy after the sequel trilogy. How to maintain the peace with no military? If you don't militarize you have something like The First Order rise. If you militarize something like the Empire can take over.

I do wish that we'd get some new ship designs because I agree, it's really confusing to the average viewer.

Well, yeah. There's a whole other trilogy that delves into these characters having to face new evil after this scene, and by the time the credits roll in the third film, most of them are dead. :(

That's exactly why it's depressing getting a glimpse of the Core and what's going on with the NR there after RotJ. It's a part of the canon I would rather avoid.

Were people also depressed when they heard characters scoff at the willingness or capacity of The New Republic to deal with the new (old) threats that it faces in the previous two seasons? Or similarly despairing at the people at the coal face, like X Wing pilot Captain Carson Teva, explaining how people like him need help and aren't getting it quickly enough from the core, in season 2?

I'm surprised at how much this is catching people off guard. What were they expecting? The utopia of The Federation?

Should I feel bad for Pershing and dislike Kane? Kane didn't smirk, shoved bit of biscuit in her month, little annoying but that me. I did expect her not to do what she did and did something else.

Not at all, we know the state of the New Republic from books already and I like the real life portrayal and how it differs from old EU.
It just wasn't fleshed out on the screen before in such capacity and seeing how the New Republic operates and can't effectively handle looming threats, well,
you feel bad for the heroes of Rebellion, that's only natural :)

Same as in our world, there will always be Star Wars.

    100%

I think the point is very much that the New Republic is corrupt and ill equipped to deal with the looming threat. I mean, you could pretty much get that from the crawl in TFA, eight years ago. There's a reason that a separate entity called The Resistance had to exist at all.

It's not so much the New Republic is corrupt. It's that the people who have the most power to influence its prosperity or to let it falter and to fail, are decadent, complacent, out of touch with reality and corruptible.

This was a crucial element of the Republic at the time of prequels, so we were told. But it was sadly never compellingly conveyed or realistically depicted.

    I'll go with complacent.

People living in the New Republic most likely assumed democracy was a given -- until it wasn't.

    Exactly.

I absolutely love the interpretation of the prequels that the Jedi and Republic were both corrupt. their fall as much a product of this as it was to Palpatine's machinations. And I think there's definitely some degree to validity to this theory.

But man, maybe it's because I was a kid when they came out or maybe it's because Lucas poorly conveyed it, but I spent decades pretty well convinced that it was simply due to the Bad Guys surprising the Good Guys.

Even if the New Republic's fate echoes the Republic's a little closely, this is a great opportunity to try to tell that story a little more clearly... with the added bonus of "if you haven't learned from history, you're doomed to repeat it".

Anyone else on the fence on whether Kane is still working for the Empire or super committed to the NR?

I'm guessing it's her job to weed out the people who aren't committed to following the rules of the amnesty program. She put the thought of continuing the work in Pershing's mind. When he came to her to say he wanted to pursue it, she looked disappointed. Almost like she was hoping he wouldn't.

Bumping up the power on Pershing's treatment is where I get iffy. Is she still working for the empire and killing (or messing up) its enemies, or is she super committed to the NR and dishing out her own justice for offenders?

I'm guessing she must have done something impressive to get to be an amnesty officer to begin with. Can't wait to see more of this plotline.

Yes, I completely agree. I am 50/50 on her. The best part is that unlike many other times, I can see a great path for her either way.

If she is still loyal to Gideon or the Imps, then she has indeed worked the Amnesty Program to gain trust and status within the organization. That is where I got the heavy Andor-like vibes, with the spy aspect. There are no doubt former Imperials that truly feel that the Empire was good and would gladly partake in nefarious activity and just grin and bear it with the Amnesty routines. The NR seems to be apathetic about the idea of dissent, and as we saw previously, again highlighted in Andor, that sort of attitude is fertile ground for growing a revolution. If she is part of such a movement, she is surely not working alone, someone had to recruit her. My first thought when we saw her in the exam control room was that the other person with her could have also been a spy, but when we see he is a Twi'lek, we know that he is not. Was that intentional?

Now, if she is truly reformed and was all-in for the NR, that would insinuate that the Amnesty Program is in fact aware of the risk, and has false double-agents like Kane to specifically expose at-risk individuals. That would explain the "coincidence" that two high-ranking officers from the same ship would be placed not only on the same planet, but the same apartment complex. That could lead to her trying to learn info from an underground Imperial loyalist network about Gideon's whereabouts, or possibly even using Pershing as bait to draw Gideon in to be recaptured.

Either way, it seems to me that Elia Kane's arc is ramping up, while Pershing's is ramping down. He doesn't seem to hold much value to either side, and now that his brains may be closer to mashed potatoes, his stock prices are dropping.
