I assume it is a project aiming to somehow bring Palpatine back?

Or it's related to it. What I found curious was that this was coming from Brendol Hux, who if I recall correctly, wasn't exactly fond of cloning. More curious still is that he was on the Shadow Council and not Grand Admiral Rae Sloane, who by this point would be his superior in the First Order in the Unknown Regions.

Side note: I'm starting to think Moff Gideon's cloning experiments have more to do with creating a new breed of clone soldier than they do a new body for Palpatine. It's likely that sometime after Gideon's shenanigans that Pershing's research into gene splicing found its way to Exegol, eventually leading to Snoke.

Interesting. I'm no expert on this, but Wookiepedia claimed that The First Order was officially revealed in year 29ABY, and unofficially created in 15ABY, which should be around 5 years later than Mando S3?

Edit: If so, then Brendol doesn't represent the FO yet, but is just another VIP warlord (charged with Project Necromancer) at this time?

Wasn't Palpatine's return a shock and surprise to everyone including Kylo and the First Order? It seemed to me that a select few outside of Exegol knew what was going on. This is all seeming to make it not such a big secret, which I guess could maybe smooth out some of the WTFness of it all, but maybe there is something entirely different going on with these Remnant Warlords.

Did Sidious just sit on Exogol for 30 years and wait for the next batch of clones; hoping that THIS is the one, each time he body hopped?

EDIT: Biggest remaining unanswered question is, how LONG did it take for Sidious to get from Endor to Exogol? I mean, its WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY the kark out there and it takes Star Ships a HOT minute to get there. No wayfinder in the netherworld either.

The timeline for the First Order is a bit of a mess. I tend to label Sloane's taking command of the spared Remnant forces in the Unknown Regions just after the Battle of Jakku in 5 ABY as the First Order's origin point, not helped by her literally including a "first order" in her little speech to Brendol Hux.

Not as we know it, no. Though what I find curious is that Brendol Hux would be considered the representative of this faction while Rae Sloane outranks him as the commander-in-chief. Never mind their presence on the Shadow Council at all.

In theory, as @MBWilson pointed out, very few knew of the Emperor's "survival" on Exegol, and I don't think there was any direct control over the First Order until Snoke came into the picture. At best, Project Necromancer could be a similar, unrelated endeavor that eventually finds its way back to Exegol along with Pershing's research.

Somewhat off-topic, is it just me or does one of the warlords in the cold open look similar to Zsinj?

The name infers a much grander plan than building another clone army, I think Gideon doesn't believe that any of the dead will return and he's straight working his own agenda. Dark side Lando in shiny black Beskar; now with Darth Maul Throwback Helmet -TM , I am down with all of this shadiness.

    For others, power. Forever.

For the purposes of the show itself, "Necromancer" is a cool name for a villianous project.

As to why Favreau and Filini picked it, the Necromancer was the name given to the mysterious wizard living in Dol Guldur in JRR Tolkien's The Hobbit. In The Lord of the Rings, we learned it was the spirit-form the Dark Lord Sauron took on while he searched for the One Ring before returning to Mordor and revealing himself. Given that the project is about bringing Palpatine back to life, the name fits.

I’m starting to lean this way as well. The Shadow council was a great look into how divided the remnants of the empire really are. This would also add more weight to why Mando was sent in to get grogu initially, Gideon didn’t want to alert the other warlords to his science fair experiment.

If Gideon does manage to succeed and creat a force sensitive, clone dark trooper in full beaker armor, all he would need is a Mandalorian (or better yet a Jedi trained Mandalorian strong in the force,) to train them and he’d be pretty unstoppable.

I am still counting on his incredible hubris to be his downfall though… Fingers crossed.

    Necromance:
-someone who claims to communicate with the dead in order to discover what is going to happen in the future
-a person who uses witchcraft or sorcery, especially to reanimate dead people
-conjuration of the spirits of the dead for purposes of magically revealing the future or influencing the course of events.
    ...

Clone projects, Hux, First Order, Snoke...

Seems the Emperor is coming back for me XD

Love Favreau and Filoni being faithfull to ST too.

Anyone notice that Pellaeon was the one to give final permission for the Praetorian Guards?

    What a great episode.

Given that the Mandalorian clans are now in pretty open war with the Imperial Remnant, there's one interesting idea I think a future season could tackle- how Mandalorians feel about the First Order (and before them, both the Empire and even the Republic) appropriating Mandalorian tradition, especially given how important the role armor has played in this story. That, as well as how they feel about the Clones being phased out to be replaced by stormtroopers, though I'm sure that is still best focused most heavily on in The Bad Batch.

Damn, I would have expected Cultural Appropriation from the old Empire and the First Order, but from the Republic too??!? Yikes!

Hey, they were the first to do it, too (or, at least the Kaminoans were). :p

Could also be a poignant way to bring Vode An back into canon, too.

I wonder who is forging the beskar for Gideon? He probably has an easier time of it being on Mandalore, but I would think that it would be some sort of secret sauce known only to Mandalorians.
