The latest trailer for The Mandalorian has scored record viewership numbers for a preview of an upcoming Star Wars television series on Disney Plus.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the second trailer for The Mandalorian season 3 has managed to rack up 83.5 million views in the first 24 hours after it released. For frame of reference, the previous record-holder with regard to Disney Plus shows in the Star Wars franchise -- Obi-Wan Kenobi -- managed to amass approximately 58 million views, which is still most impressive in its own right. This is a good sign for the third season of The Mandalorian, given the initial teaser for the third season seemingly performed below expectations -- likely not helped by bootleg copies of it leaking out after Star Wars Celebration and it taking months to release officially at Disney D23 -- but clearly, the long wait between the second and third seasons haven't led to a loss of appetite for more stories about the continued adventures of a Mandalorian and his adopted infant Jedi.

Some viewers who haven't seen the spin-off series The Book of Boba Fett -- which bridges the second and third seasons of the hit series -- have been taken aback by the trailer showing Grogu's sudden return to Din Djarin's arms, given how season 2 of The Mandalorian ended with him going off to learn about the Force with Luke Skywalker. Luke, realizing that the child needs his parent, returns him to Din's care before the start of the new season. Din has decided that he needs to atone for a grave sin against his clan by removing his helmet in view of others, and so he sets out to travel to the ruins of Mandalore and find the living waters beneath the mines as penance, and is taking his adopted son with him. In the meantime, a growing threat from the remnants of the Galactic Empire is rising, and allies of the Mandalorian have to uncover the threat before it is too late.

The series stars Pedro Pascal, Katee Sackhoff, Carl Weathers, Giancarlo Esposito, Emily Swallow, and Amy Sedaris, and will feature episodes directed by Weathers, Rick Famuyiwa, Rachel Morrison, Lee Isaac Chung, Peter Ramsey, and Bryce Dallas Howard. Showrunner Jon Favreau wrote all eight episodes of the upcoming season, co-writing with Dave Filoni on two of the episodes, and co-writing with The Book of Boba Fett veteran Noah Kloor on one.

The Mandalorian returns to Disney Plus on March 1, 2023. Both of the previously released seasons of the show, alongside the spin-off The Book of Boba Fett, are available to watch exclusively on the streaming service.
