I gots a site of my own that is a bit of a lighthearted look at Star Wars and the coverage of the thing.

Anyway, I had speculated that The Force Awakens will be the first time any 'new' surprise can come of Star Wars. Right?

We had the original trilogy as kids (assuming you were a kid at the time) then the prequels as adults, or as first gen fans. But even kids who had the prequels as their 'first' Star Wars, most had some knowledge of the originals. Worst case, their parents gave away the deets on who was who.

If you watch them in order.....there is no 'reveal' in Empire. Yeah? Vader is Luke's father?

Really? I mean the entire prequel trilogy makes that completely clear.

THAT is what I'm most excited about with the new films! We didn't know details with the prequels, but we had an idea where it was all going. TFA is a whole new ball of wax.

Yes, it's the first true 'New Dawn' we've had since Return of the Jedi when we had no idea who would live or die. Looking forwards is always the best way :)

It's certainly exciting. I've always maintained that Anakin's transformation to Vader should have been hidden in a way to the audience that makes it seem like he died, with a mysterious masked man appearing shortly thereafter. I didn't think Obi-wan should have brutally injured his friend like we saw in ROTS, it just didn't jive with me. I would have liked it to be more subtle with some suggestion of what happened instead of actually watching Anakin burn and be encased in armor. Obi-wan could have had his suspicions and that could have been shown without him coming right out and saying it. Anyway, that's off-topic. I'm hoping we get something completely surprising this go around. I'm a 90's kid, so the prequels should have been my films, but I really grew up watching the '97 VHS remastered versions of the originals. Like you said, even at the age of 7 I had already heard about Darth Vader being Luke's father. It was hard to avoid with references to the oft-misquoted "Luke, I am your father," on TV and in movies. Didn't help that my older brothers liked to spoil things for me either.

I think the first triology was like that because G.L made stuff up as he went along.
So even himself at first did not really know where it would all go.

Also it was new and totaly unknown to the people in them days.

But yeah i share these thoughts and hopes about the new triology.I want it to feel familiar yet fresh, with some nice twists and suprises. My benchmark is the Kotor story.

Having not read any books or comics,to this day I hold the story of Kotor in high regards.

To a point... he certainly threw a couple curves in there. But in the end, we knew what would happen. The moment that little angelic face appeared on screen, we knew he would be Vader one day. We knew he would fall in love, and have twins that would be hidden. We knew Kenobi would be a General, and that he would serve in the Clone Wars. We knew Palpatine "would cause himself to be elected Chancellor" and from there assume the mantle of Emperor. We knew the Jedi would be broken, to be hunted down and exterminated. We knew that Kenobi would face Anakin on the edge of a volcano, and that Anakin would fall into it, disfiguring him. We knew Kenobi and Yoda would escape the genocide. We knew who would die, we knew who couldn't die.

We just needed to see how it would play out. Now? It's anybody's ballgame, fellas...

There was a hilarious show in the us called "that 70s show" they had an episode where a character named Eric saw New hope and became a huge fan which became a gimmick for him for the entire remainder of the series the finale actually took place on new years eve 79 I still hold hope to this day they'll do a special episode of his reaction to "I am your father"

Ironically, I was thinking of something similar tonight at work. Not so much about the reveal aspect but that this is the perfect storm for Disney in that they can incorporate the BIG 3, as well as Chewie and the droids, which will give us that connective tissue to the OT, perhaps will have some ties to the PT as well (think Vader) and launch into a whole new saga, of course, building on what's come before.

For now on we are set up as George envisioned -- serials that lead one into the other and can continue endlessly while continuing forward in both chronological and sequential order. It's a very exciting time for Star Wars fans!

    That's very interesting indeed...
I've met, again, one colleague of mine who hasn't seen ANY Star Wars episode yet.

That'll become real complicated on how you will suggest them in which order to see the movies from now on...

Well... Watch 4-5-6, then skip 1 and go to 2 and 3 then jump to 7... And while waiting for 8,... Go back and watch #1... For fun.

The term "marathon" comes to mind... 4, 5, 6 then 1, 2, 3... or the impact wont be as great...

My guess is, Disney is planning a re-release of the Saga on Blu-Ray, or something else (For a limited time only)... with stuff from Episode VII sometimes next year.
    It would make perfect sense

I don't hate the prequels, I really don't. But I sometimes wish they did not exist. Not that they are bad movies, they aren't for what they are, but they spoil that reveal so hard!

Someone above mentioned having Anakin just 'die', then Vader shows up, and it's really ambiguous. If Palpatine had been talking all the time about his 'new apprentice' then Vader comes on the scene, then we'd all think 'There he is the guy!' while Annie is just........gone.

I'm not sure Lucas ever endeavored to preserve that ultimate plot twist from ESB (since people who didn't even see Star Wars knew Vader was the diddy) but for those watching the entire saga later on, it would have been sweetles.

These days, I'll do a saga-binge over a weekend about once a year. With the expanded saga to come, I may need a week off. I'm down bro.

This is exactly what I wrote in some other thread - the only two fails are important to me in the prequel trilogy. First Padme dying too soon without Lea having any memory of her - which directly contradicts ROTJ. And second that Lucas made the audience know that Anakin IS Vader. There should be a duel, Obi-Wan walk away and that´s it. There was no need at all to see Vader in E3. Why??? The glorious entrée to the saga, the perfect one, was that aboard of Tantive 4 through the smoke of the recent combat....that was his moment. No what we´we been shown at the end of E3. Now no first time viewer can see it in the order 1-6, if he wants the full impact of Star Wars. Letting the audience know that Anakin is Vader in E3 ruins the I´m your father moment. And the death of Padme is just another mistake. Lucas wanted to close the story of Padme and make it even bigger tragedy and he wanted badly to show us Vader (I wonder if he just heards the will of the fans)......To that I can only add the new Emperor/Vader talk from Empire, because now seems that Vader has Alzhaimer and can´t figure it out by himself about Luke being his son, uncle Palpatine has to tell him......there are really the only important fauls - no Jar-Jar, bad acting, love, Ewoks....no no, that is nothing in comparison to this

I´ve seen first Jedi when it was in theathers in 83, so when 2 years later finally got Star Wars and Empire, I already know about Vader being Luke´s father. So I also missed the great surprise...I want very much my son can experience that mmoment. He´s almost 4, so in 2-3 years we start with Episode 4 :)

I always assumed Leia meant her adoptive mother and not Padme. I mean the question was something along the lines of "Do you remember much about your mother homie?" and not "Do you remember much about OUR mother homie?".....so I assumed Mama Organa.

I think I recall Lucas talking alot about 'when you watch them back to back.....' as if he was sure folks would just understand. I've always thought he just assumed if you are viewing 1-3 then you've already seen 4-6 so this really is no shock. I don't think it was sloppy, I just think it was a blind spot. He never may have even considered "you know what? Maybe someone who has never seen this junk will one day get a Blu Ray collection of 'em and stay home from work and binge-watch them."

I really feel that idea never occurred to him.

I think there is only one way to watch them. I had my two kids watch Star Wars for the first time this summer. I had them watch 4,5,6 then 1,2,3. They are hooked. My 6 year old told a boy in her class who said he has only seen the TPM that he was watching them wrong and he needs to watch 4,5,6 before 1,2,3. I had to Emil when I heard her tell him

My kids as well are 90's kids and it's not like they could escape any spoilers with me around. Each time the films would be released on a new format, we'd watch them all over again. Of my four kids, my 24 year old has the most reverence for Star Wars in general and he brushes off the prequels, my youngest is 20 and he SAYS he doesn't like the prequels, but you can bet lots of coin was dropped on prequel toys when all 4 were young and none seemed to gripe much.

But what do you know? You're just a malfunctioning astromech droid. :)
