So, maybe what they are dragging is a rudder. They aren't "creating a 'smoke screen'", but that's how they stabilize. It's also why the one is a bit out of control, the rudder isn't down yet.

Hard to tell. Looks like salt on surface and right below a red sand or water. Anyways, the scene looks beautiful.

I don't have any insight, but that kind of rudder doesn't make any sense to me. We've seen other land-hugging vehicles, but nothing requiring contact with the ground in order to work. In fact, quite the opposite.

Purely speculative, but I'm on board with them stirring up a smoke screen of some kind.

Well one thing that's clear is they aren't B-wings as previously reported/speculated. Though there does appear to be some design influence.

I think they are mining speeders of some sort. The fact that one appears to be struggling makes me think they aren't being used as intended. MSW said the resistance uses ships to drop some kind of mining gems on the FO walkers. This must have something to do with that.

Perhaps the "rudder" is how they harvest the crystals for some reason, or at least how they pick them up to drop on the FO.

Isn't it said that beneath the surface layer of salt there is a red mineral layer. Maybe it's so soft underneath that by wrecking the surface, the walkers won't be able to move accross it. If there's no cable available - improvise!

I heard/read about the red mineral layer somewhere too... good shout. My first thought on viewing the teaser was that they were some kind of landspeeder which moves using something akin to hydrofoil technology, but I could see the 'tails' turning out to be surface drills or some kind of mining tool being used to cut through a thin planetary crust.

Yeah defo. They must be some mining vehicle which are used in this battle sequence when the FO arrives. They look weird, like pod racers, I wonder if they aren't flown like this on a usual day.

I thought the same thing, that maybe in a non-combat scenario, there was some sort of dragging mechanism to break up the salt layer and get the crystals.

First thing that I thought when I saw the trailer: "Pod racer again?".

    Now THIS is CROPDUSTING!

    No? I'll move along then.

I'd like to think of the red waves as tactical, to either alert the Resistance to their position or to confuse the Walkers targeting systems
