This post is in the mindset of having a blurred line between good and evil. What if we come to find in EP7 that the Emperor's true purpose of the Death Stars were not to destroy the much smaller Republic, but were primarily to protect himself and his empire from the Ancient Fear so that he could rule unchallenged? This would certainly put things into a different perspective right from the get go. It would also give reason for Luke going into hiding or being banished to some level, and/or not being able to establish a reformed Jedi Order. I'm not sure if a scenario like this was covered in any EU material. Would JJ and company be bold enough to do something like this? How would this fit into the arc of the PT and OT?

From the last unfinished episode of the Clone Wars TV show released so far:

Obi-Wan: I've never seen nor heard of a Kyber Crystal like this one. Was the Council aware of their existence?

    Mace: Master Yoda?

Yoda: Out of the stories of old, this crystal comes. Long ago... in forgotten times, when the Sith and Jedi fought for control of the galaxy... weapons there were of unimaginable power. Always at their heart a Kyber Crystal was. Just like the one you described.

Anakin: You're speaking of children's stories... fairy tales.

Yoda: In legends we often find great truths, Skywalker. A warning this is. Powerful the Sith Lord has become. With great designs for our destruction. If find one of these crystals he can another he will seek.

I wonder how much more the Tarkin novel will delve into this. Or Rebels.

Are the unfinished episodes considered canon?

In the legends EU in was implied that Palpatine knew about the impending Vong invasion, the Death Star was part of his prep to defend the galaxy. It's legends though, so not really valid...

Spoiler for the new episode of Rebels, "Breaking Ranks":

They talk about the Kyber Crystal, the Empire is getting them shipped. Hera destroys a transport ship of the Kyber Crystal and it blows up complete with a blast/shockwave.

My first thought, upon seeing the thread title, was "the true purpose of the Death Star was to instill fear of destruction on the subjugated worlds"

My thought after reading your post was, "give the man two thumbs up... he may be on to something"

I don't know, I think making the Emperor not evil anymore would kind of retroactively take away from the struggle and sacrifice of the Rebel Alliance.

Even if the "true" purpose of the Death Stars is to protect the galaxy from an Ancient Fear or the Yuuzan Vong, that doesn't make Emperor Palpatine less evil. Only more farseeing and cautious
