In TPM, we hear about the plight of the people of Naboo under the Trade Federation, that they are suffering and dying.

Why wasn't anything like this shown? I'm not saying GL should have gone dark and gritty, and shown tortured people wearing silly pseudo-Renaissance outfits. But why wasn't there ANY evidence at all of the average citizen of Naboo being imprisoned or even shoved around, maybe placed in camps, or that sort of thing?

A lot of the time when I watch that film, which I honestly think is the most Star Wars-y of the PT overall, I forget anyone even lives on Naboo besides some Gungans, some soldiers and pilots, and the Queen and her staff.

Were those scenes filmed and cut? Were they dropped from an early draft of the script?

Where's the danger? Where's the threat?

As far as I know, there are 2 Naboo scenes that did not make it into the final cut. But they were for Clone Wars not TPM... I guess it was supposed to be assumed. Its a real shame. Because they never showed this, the words are hollow. Everyone looks pretty well fed for the most part.... no one looks to be in any real distress. I wonder if they covered this in the novel.

Everyone looks well-fed because The Trade FEDERATION is holding a blockade and trying to sign a peace treaty. They don't want to look even worse by killing off people and making them malnourished. TPM was supposed to be geared for a younger audience because of merchandising and all that "great" stuff. As you said, it's implied, but it could have diluted from the main story arc for our main characters. GL tried to show a more intimate living sitiation for Naboo's residence when we see Padme and her family. I believe that all of it is still canon and was cut due to the run time.

the scene you are referring to is from Attack of the Clones. 10 years later. I think they could have afforded 10-15 minutes to show the queen caring for her sick and hungry people for the sake of the film. It would have fleshed out Portmans character more and given us a reason to care for the people of Naboo. We never se it though, so we dont really care.

Ok, I'm confused. They shot some stuff for CW that was a flashback to the occupation of Naboo? Or they shot stuff for TPM that didn't go in?

It's been a while since I watched all the BTS stuff for TPM.

Yeah, it was likely deemed too dark for that film as it was for the youngest audience. However, they could've just shown people being herded into some cells, or a battle droid shoving a father in front of his kids, nothing too traumatic, not like charred skeletons. Wouldn't even need more than a minute or two or screen time.

Maybe it was just more important to see an animal fart, or someone stepping in poop, or getting their hand stuck in something.

the only scenes on Naboo that didn't make it into the movie was when Qui-Gon, Kenobie, and Jar-Jar surface in the submarine... and another silly little scene when Anakin returns to the hanger and asks "I'm not gonna get in trouble, am I?

the other BTS on Naboo are from AOC

    Ah, I see. Thanks.

I still don't understand how so much of the stuff that humanizes Amidala and the Naboo got left out.

OK, at this point I think I should say I didn't create this so I could hate on the PT. I actually dig TPM as a sort of standalone film in the SW universe.

It really could've pushed this film a little further out of the hole it has kind of found itself in over the years if we'd just had a little more humanity in it. Just a tiny bit. I believe there was totally room to let moments like showing the TF to be more thuggish and let that subplot breathe a little.

I guess "oops, I forgot to do that" works for George Lucas. Me? I'd get fired from my job.

very good point. No prequel bashing intended from me either. in fact, if it weren't for TPM, I might not even be in this forum today.

I get funny looks when I tell people that Jar Jar is the Luke Skywalker of TPM.

He's a country bumpkin who meets a Jedi, gets swept away on a cool-looking ship after realizing his homeworld is hostile to him, gets a taste of the larger world beyond his own, then after finding some courage, goes back with a ragtag band of freedom fighters to defeat the bad guys.

The audience was suffering and dying during that scene.

One of the lines that I really enjoy in the movie. It was first showed in the trailer and I still like to hearing. Amidala was a good character in TPM, but unfortunately it was ruined in AOTC and ROTS.

I agree with the OP. I remember thinking...."wow, Naboo seems like a beautiful vacation". It would have been a great opportunity to show the real issues the people face under the sparkling surface. Cloud City is a great example. It is a wealthy and beautiful place but you can see people are bullied by the empire, live in fear, and are not free.

Exactly. And the shots in TESB where we see people evacuating is probably less than a minute long total! Out of all the folks that worked on or saw the story before the film was done, not one said "how do we know they are suffering other than from her saying it?"

It boggles the mind. I can see a film school student trying to play it out that way, but not a pro. It's the sort of thing that almost (almost) makes me want a Special Edition of the PT.

P.S., you can use my username, this isn't Reddit. ;)

These are Padme scenes deleted from AOTC.

    Also TPM deleted scenes.

I also wish they'd shown some of this suffering, because it did feel a bit hollow considering the fact that everyone looked happy dandy at the end, and Padme herself was wandering around in ballgown after ballgown. I suppose he was going for the same thing as ANH; a whole planet is blown up and all we get is a slightly horrified reaction from Leia.

Nah, that couldn't have been what he was going for. He didn't at any time think about the human element to telling his story.

Also, we got way more than a reaction from Leia, we saw Ben Kenobi nearly have a heart attack when he felt those people die. That was huge. That was human. Neither of the Jedi there on Naboo indicated to us any feeling of that sort about any suffering or death. It was hardly even brought up during the senate proceedings.

    "Our people are dying, senator."
    "The death toll is catastrophic."
"I was not elected to watch our people suffer and die while you discuss this invasion in a committee."

It was mentioned enough times... but agree, I don't think it worked. At least not visually. We meet the Naboo after the blockade has already started, but all we see is opulence. When Amidala goes back to Naboo, that was the opportunity to at least show some people in camps rather than just empty streets. And then the parade happens and it's all la-dee-da.
