The prequels made Vader almost kind of laughable to me.. When I see him walk through the doorway in that opening scene to VI, I can't help thinking of what a whiny b**ch he was in the prequels and how Palpatine controls him like a glove puppet. The NOOOOOOOOO scene from episode 3 didn't help either, or this:

    hahahaha

Anyway, Rogue One needs to do a couple of things.

It should show Vader being really evil and scary again, and it should show Vader making decisions independent from Palpatine. He needs to be made into the most intimidating villain in the universe, ruthless to the core and absolutely no lines of dialogue like:

    "Are you an angel?"

    "Yippee!"

Look dude, i'm sorry.... but those lines stunk.

It's time to see Vader do what he does best again.

Well the prequels were about the destruction of innocence and the downfall of VADER and how, by the time, he turns back to the light side, he is a shell of himself for the most part and he knows what he's doing is wrong but is stuck by the time the armor is back on him...I think that showing him as pure evil would go against his redemptive story arc .

The portrayal of Anakin was one of the worst aspects of the prequels, but I don't think it took away from Vader at all. Every evil A-hole was a dipstick kid at some point, then he went through 30 years of hell to make him into the monster we saw in the OT. I do agree that he should be evil to the core, bad mama jama one man slaughter crew. That would add some impact to his sacrifice in Jedi I think.

As we see in the new canon, Vader reaches his 'evil' peak between ANH and Empire when he destroys the last vestiges of his past (Darth Vader 24). Before ANH, he would be more on the bully side, enforcer who cleans up the mess when needed. He is the evilest when he becomes a planner and a strategist. I have no doubt though that he will be kicking some serious butt - as a boogeyman or force of nature who appears and destroys everything in his path. I doubt that we will see some nuance in Vader, the way we see later in the timeline.

Vader was killing the weaks and kneeling before the strong. That's what he did. This is the defintion of evil.

By this point Vader has no idea of Luke's existence. He has destroyed 99 percent of Anakin Skywalker. There shouldn't be one inch of Jedi compassion left in him. Not that he had much to begin with when provoked. Vader should destroy Rebels. Want a reference? Read the Vader comics or "Lords of the Sith".

If we get any of the Vader from "Lords of the Sith" we are in for a real treat. The opening sequence of the book with him boarding the stolen starship was amazing.

I don't want to see a lot of Vader, but what I do see I want to reinforce the image of him we had in ESB.

I just hope Darth Vader's actions are BOLD.

For continuity's sake. And my sanity.

Ruthless, efficient and simple. That's the way of Vader.

"Sir, we could send in an espionage unit.. sabotage their turrets, ships, radars. We can then capture and interrogate patrols, ask them about their capabilities.. and then.."

"NO! Send in the AT-ATs and blow them up!"

    "Yes Lord Vader."

I agree. In Lords of the Sith you could almost feel Vader's power. I hope we get something like that in this movie

So, the only good portrayal of Anakin/Vader is one in which he is one-dimensionally evil?

By the way, Anakin's "evil" began to erode in "Return of the Jedi".

This is very sad to me. I find it sad that many fans can only accept Anakin as some extremely powerful, one-dimensional evil figure . . . and nothing else. Not only do I find this sad, but a little beneath contempt. They should never become writers.

It's a tough line to walk. Obviously Vader needs to be an imposing force, and it's interesting to modern audiences (who have seen ROTJ and the prequels) to see little instances of his humanity and vulnerability. However, the ANH era is also kind of the prime of his coldness.

So I totally agree that he's a very humanizing character, but I think that he should also be treated with caution. I think Rogue One handled him pretty well.

They are like that because of the PT, when your killing younglings etc, there is not much good to look at other than TROTJ.

Yeah- it doesn't help that the actor who played him was also pretty one dimensional.
