The Rathtars scene definitely struck a different tone than the rest of the movie. But that was mainly because it was a huge CGI scene that was more akin to something we would have seen in the prequels, as opposed to the traditional look and feel that JJ beautifully re-established up to that point.

But I'm with you. That scene doesn't bother me or stand out quite like it did on opening night after multiple viewings. And one has to keep in mind what the entire Han Solo/Rathtars sequence was intended to do...
    1. It was a needed break from the fast paced opening 30 minutes. Our new hero's needed some quiet time get to know Han and convince him to help.
    2. How else was Snoke going to know that BB-8 was with Han Solo, if not for the gangs that showed up to repossess their "investments" from the smuggler.
    3. The Rathtar's getting loose allowed Finn and Rey to once again be alone and continue their bonding. A bond that was evident from Rey's reaction when Finn was taken by the Rathtar.
    4. And let's face it. Stars Wars is about fun, adventure, weird aliens, and unpredictable situations. The Han Solo/Rathtar scene did that pretty darn well. It ranks up there as well, if not better, than the Space Worm in the asteroid from ESB, or the monster in the garbage compactor in ANH.

Rathtars. If you read the entire thread, you'll see that we were complementing JJ for the Rathtar scene as it was on par with the Space Worm, the trash compactor monster, ect.

I was so freakin' certain that Jakku was Tatooine. Right up until Han said "Jakku? That junkyard?"

I had this crazy idea about Maz Kanata was the love interest of Yoda way back in the day. Like 4-500 years back. It was a friendship that couldn't go any farther than that. So instead they worked together and Yoda is the reason why Maz knows what she does.

I also liked that the theory works with my idea that Yoda is the one that told Maz where Luke's lightsaber was located at.

Since then I am not sure if Yoda was the one that told her about the lightsaber.

Fair. But who is to say that anyone other than Maz knows who Han is? The gangs knew Han personally and relayed that to Snoke. Snoke, knowing that Han was involved, was key to the developing Kylo Ren story.

But, I guess they could have written in a gang member or someone else that knew Han into the Cantina scene.

You didn't read the crawl? ;)

Plus Finn, Poe and Hux and others say Jakku about a half dozen times or more in reference to BB-8 before the Han scene. Just sayin'! Lol

About my thinking Jakku was Tatooine Darth Chewie asked -

Yeah, I read the crawl. Figured it was clever misinformation, J.J.'s last attempt to stamp out the rumor before the movie. And I heard Finn, Hux, and the rest say Jakku. Figured they'd never been to Tatooine and wouldn't know the difference.

But when Han said it, I gave up hope. Han wouldn't lie to us. He'd know the difference. And I knew right then that all the Cantina Credits I had bet on Jakku being Tatooine were gone for good...

yeh, I expected more of an appearance from Luke, but was surprised to find as I watched the movies I was swept away with the new cast to the point that as Luke turn up at the end I realised I hadn't missed him.
