BB-8 weighs less than a regular astromech ~ that alone makes him an upgrade--for a fighter pilot especially.
we also don't know about his internal capacity: he's probably more fuel/energy efficient, has fewer vulnerabilities (you can't trip him), and i'm guessing since he's much newer than R2, he's got more memory capacity in terms of data.

in the book he's also described as unnaturally attached to Poe. R2 had that affection in some measures, but apparently this isn't a common thing in droids.

Maybe he was just programmed that way...but it would be cool for him to have a stealth mode

Rey described BB-8 having a "selenium drive". I'm not sure if that was indicative of a custom feature though.. but if it is, it expands his capabilities even further than a normal BB droid.

I agree with not adding too many extra features and gimmicks to the droid making it into some sort of celestial Swiss Army knife. But if I would be allowed to add anything I think I would want the following:

Since it appears that BB-8's "head" is magnetically attached to its "body" and there is no hard connection I would have BB-8 be able to disengage it's head which could hover/fly high in the air like a drone and survey the landscape while its body rolled beneath it/followed it (within a certain range of course). This could also come in handy in space for a quick inspection of the X-Wing hull. If an issue is found the head would reattach to the body which, with simple compressed gas thrusters (no rockets) could maneuver in zero gravity to make repairs.

Playing further off this head-body separation, in times of danger or battle I would have BB-8 spin it's body at very high rpm's and then release from the head, knocking down stormtroopers like bowling pins or like a pinball. Lol!

For starters,he would definitely need to level up his security and computer use to at least 12.
As far as features go,HoloNet access and a music player would not hurt Rey's lonely evenings out in space.:D

Stealth mode is what I was thinking, even if it was just something to change his (or her?) color markings...
"That BB unit.. the First Order is looking for one just like it..."

Hmm what else... I wouldn't mind seeing BB-8 actually pilot a starfighter, that would be cool!
    "A droid stole a ship..?"

Otherwise, I'm just looking forward to more BB-8!

Artoo hooked up to the DS with the old school usb/ plug it in method. I totally want to see BB-8 hook into the FO archives with a superfast wireless connection. He already does it from his head to his body anyway... Plus I want him to have the latest ant- virus software, so there's none of that low power mode, have to push Ctrl-Alt-Delete business.

I was watching Gremlins the other night, cause I use my time wisely, and I noticed the gadget the dad invented called "the Bathroom Buddy"....and I wondered if this influenced the design at all....

I would think that the influence on the design is obvious

What if BB-8 were in Poe's X-wing while they were in a space battle, and Poe gets knocked unconscious? BB-8 has to take control of flying the ship and operating the guns, taking out multiple TIE fighters before Poe regains consciousness! That would be awesome!!!

I would like to see BB-8 reveal himself as a master of disguise. He has to go on a spy mission, so we see him peeking out from behind a door, then rolling down the hallway of a FO star destroyer wearing the classic glasses and a fake mustache! Along with a trenchcoat! At another time, he puts on a fur coat and pretends to be an Ewok, or a cape and pretends to be a Jawa! Finally, he stands on R2's head with the aforementioned trench coat and pretends to be a human! Now that is ingenuity! :p
