    The original version of the ANH Galaxy Guide speculates that if Tarkin didn’t die, that he might have been appointed to a new position of Supreme Moff. What might this position be in charge of?

    Probably something like a Prime Minister? Someone overseeing the lesser moffs and functions as a political intermediary between the Imperial hierarchy and the Eternal Emperor?

    Doesn't Supreme normally just have the addition of tomato and sour cream??

    Ok, I'll stop. Surely @Angelman has this nailed as Moff was to be a political title taking place of local Governors and such, ruling over the citizens which a PM-type position would make sense to install over the Grand Moffs. I would also imagine had he not pranced off to another galaxy, Thrawn could have also been likewise named Supreme Admiral over the Imperial military.

    In a way it doesn't really matter. Roles and positions were handed out by Palpatine to ensure that that functions and authority overlapped and were confused. The Imperial leadership was forever in competition with itself and the only way to win was to curry favour with the Emperor.
