'When exactly did Star Wars first become ridiculous?"

To 'Jump The Shark' originates from the 'Happy Days' tv series. It is now a term used to describe the moment that a once credible tv show or film suddenly does things out of character, becomes ridiculous and shows its desperate for new original and interesting ideas. So..

the actual usage of Jumping The Shark has nothing to do with nostalgia. Nor does it necessarily have to do with running out of ideas, but rather doing stuff completely different and out of sync with established norms as a means to stay relevant and garner attention.

Otherwise you could argue it did in 1998.

Star Wars will not jump the shark until does something entirely out of the characterization of Star Wars.

I don't agree that Jar Jar is jumping the shark. Besides, George was talking about the ability to animate Jar Jar. He was at a previsualization meeting.

Yup he wasn't meaning to say that, "if" jar jar doesn't work then star Wars won't work visually for the story he wants to tell.

I think that as long as you can have fun with something, it hasn't "jumped the shark". Personally, I enjoy Star Wars, and though I can certainly criticize it, I absolutely love the wealth of content we're getting now.

If Luke and Rey escape Ach-To on a surf board while using the force then it will have jumped the shark.

Well . . . I would have claimed that the "STAR WARS" saga jumped the shark with "The Force Awakens". But I believe it managed to recover quite well with "Rogue One". Let's see what Rian Johnson will do.

It will jump the shark after the 2020 anthology.

That is, if they make more.

    Pessimistic? Aw, really, guys!?

Delusional prequel fanboys still pretending that the abhorrent prequel trilogy in all its indefensible stupidity didn't damage Star Wars, but TFA did. Absolute absurdity.

I get a negative rating for asking a question? Nice.

While I didn't have an issue with Starkiller Base, it was clearly an old, reused Star Wars trope; so, by definition, it's not "jumping the shark." When something "jumps the shark" it is doing something that is completely out of character. While I, personally, don't fault TFA for it, I certainly understand those who complain about it drawing from old material. But drawing from old material is not what "jumping the shark" is. In fact, it's quite the opposite of it.

Hey now, "jumping the shark" is an old term. It has since been replaced with "nuking the fridge" ;).

As for whether that has happened yet, I suppose it tends to depend on your perspective and the width of Star Wars material that you consider. If we are talking about the EU for instance, one could make the case that the introduction of the Yuuzhan Vong was a clear case of that ;).

    I have two submissions:

    1) Jaxxon

    2) The Holiday Special

These are both examples of Star Wars trying to be something it's not so that it can gain a wider audience. That's what "jumping the shark" means. Both happened in the '70's. Go figure.

When I first read this thread title, I thought it said "When Did Star Wars 'Jump The Shaak'?" as in you were making a pun out of the name of Shaak Ti - in which I was prepared to enthusiastically acknowledge a good obscure Star Wars-related pun. But it wasn't, so I'll return to my clearly dull and meaningless existence, the brief spark of excitement snuffed out as quickly as it had come.

    I'm not mad, just disappointed.
