Where do TLJ epic scenes rank

The destruction of the Supremacy was the best special effect I have seen in any SW movie and the sound design was outstanding. But I'm not sure if my definition of "epic" is what other people consider to be epic. One of my favourite shots in TFA for example is Rey drinking water in front of the massive Star Destroyer engines. This scene perfectly puts the gigantic size of the SW spaceships into perspective. It's a really calm and tranquil shot but an epic one nevertheless.

 

I took "epic" to mean iconic and/or grand.

So ESB first for me, and then TLJ right behind.

 

Someone really gave this a negative rating? Yikes!

I'm not sure where I'd rank The Last Jedi against the other saga films. Seems too early for me to say... I will say that the Snoke/Rey/Kylo scene is the most shocking and exciting moment I've had watching a Star Wars film in a theater. I'm 38, so I missed ESB. The end of Rogue One was pretty amazing, but that entire sequence is one of the best Star Wars moments ever.

 

Rey's reaction to rain as she stands beneath the falcon... so beautiful. Despite all the sh!t going down, she still appreciates the small things.

 

Star Wars has always been about moments. Each film has them, which is why I keep coming back to this world again and again. I'm only listing the big ones. There are so many little moments that I could be here all night listing them.

TPM - Dual of the Fates
AOTC - Yoda's arrival saving the Jedi
ROTS - Blue vs Blue (Obi-Wan vs Anakin)

ANH - The Death Star Trench Run
ESB - This movie had so many. The attack on Hoth. The Falcon in the Asteroid Field. Luke vs Vader. Yoda's intro. Yoda training Luke. Han in Carbonite.
ROTJ - Luke saluting at R2 and igniting the green saber while John Williams blares. Luke confronts Vader on Endor. Luke vs Vader and Vader's redemption. The entire ROTJ space battle.

TFA - Rey's life on Jakku. Han and Chewie on the Falcon again. Rey vs Ren.
TLJ - Luke and Yoda. Rey/Ren vs Snoke/Praetorian Guards. Luke vs the entire First Order and Luke's death.

 

There are too many scenes I absolutely love in the SW movies but I will try to list the scenes or shots that capture the spirit of each episode the best in my oppinion:

TPM - The establishing shot of the Boonta Eve Classic race
Why: To me TPM is great in terms of worldbuilding. This shot brilliantly re-introduces us to Tatooine and shows us that in the SW galaxy even a desert planet is full of places worth exploring. This establishing shot has a fantastic athmosphere and uses an insanely well crafted model that doesn't get nearly enough appreciation.

AOTC - Obi Wan talking to Lama Su with thousands of Clone Trooper embryos in the background
Why: It's a disturbing sight, seeing all these babies bred for the sole purpose of fighting a war orchestrated by a single power hungry man. Makes me feel uneasy whenever I see it and makes me think of the Clones as people rather than faceless cannon fodder.

ROTS - Obi Wan's and Anakin's lightsaber clashing while a lava fountain erupts in the background.
Why: This scene is perfectly timed and captures not only how powerful both Jedi are but also that this is a fight to the death now even though they were like brothers only hours before.

R1 - The ancient Jedi statue that fell over and is now halfway submerged in sand
Why: A brilliant and visually stunning shot that depicts that the once so powerful Jedi have fallen and the Empire now reigns supreme even on the holy planet Jedha.

ANH - Luke staring at the twin suns while his theme is playing in the background.
Why: Well it doesn't get more Star Wars than this, does it?

ESB - Vader clenching his fist while trying to persuade Luke to join him
Why: A very tense moment that summarizes the WTF feeling you get when hearing Vader reveal his true identity for the first time.

ROTJ - Green vs Red. Pretty much any shot during the final confrontation between father and son
Why: The original trilogy is summarized by this scene. Everything has led up to this very moment.

TFA - As mentioned above, Rey drinking water in front of the massive Star Destroyer engines.
Why: With all these huge spacestations and ships I often forget how massive these things acutally are. It also shows how lost and alone Rey must feel on Jakku and simultaneously serves as a nice throwback into the violent history of the galaxy.

TLJ - The destruction of the Supremacy
Why: This scene is the best special effect in any SW movie by far. I have always liked the Seismic bombs in AOTC. A moment of silence followed by utter destruction. The TLJ equivalent is similar but so much more powerful. It's surprising, an important event to all three storylines and beautifully executed.

 

Everyone listed great one above (some I'll repeat).

Personally, I have to go with the original ANH...
- Opening scroll (was so unique - no credits)
- Tantive IV rushing across screen followed by Star Destroyer
- Darth Vader's entrance on the Tantive IV
- Binary Sunset
- Cantina has a couple (Obi-Wan using the light saber; Solo shot first)
- Vader's Force choke
- Obi-Wan's death
- Luke destroying the Death Star
- Medallion presentation (including reveal of R2-D2)
Perhaps not all these moments are epic in the traditional sense & are not as epic as other moments, but they were so unique and fresh I think of them as epic.

 

Thats hard! Wich one, let me see. I'll try to make a list. And try to count them all. And later I will vote.

ANH - Vader entering the Tantive IV, Luke staring at the 2 suns, "Help me Obi Wan Kenobi", Everything in the Cantina (special mention Han x Greedo), Ben x Vader, Death Star trench run. (6).

TESB - Luke using the force in the Wampas cave, Battle of Hoth and the walkers, Han and Leia kissing, Yoda lifting the X-wing, Luke x Vader in dagobah, MF and ties in the asteroide field, Gingantic Worm, Solo freezing in carbonite, Luke x Vader. (9)

ROTJ - Speeder bike chase, The Emperor arriving at the DS, space battle of Endor, Battle of Endor forest, MF and destruction of DS, Luke x Vader. (6).

TPM - The Droid Invasion, "At last we reveal oursefls.to the jedi...." Pod racing, Maul x Qui Gon in Tatooine, Qui Gon and Obi Wan x Maul. (5).

AOTC - Obi wan x Jango in Kamino, Dooku and the Emperor in Coruscsnt. (2)

ROTS - Opera Scene, twin suns finale(2)

TFA - Kylo arriving in Jakku, Introduction of Rey, Han and Chewie entering the falcon, Kylo pissed destroyng the panels, Poe x tie fighters in Takodana, Han and Ben on the Bridge, Rey x Kylo, Jedi steps and meeting with Luke. (8)

TLJ - Destruction of the Dreadnouhgt, Luke routine in Ach To, "Help me Obi Wan...", apparition of Yoda, Every Thing in the Snoke Trhone room, Holdo Sacrifice, Luke x Kylo. (7).

I think is this. Probably I forgot something. The winner is TESB.

RO - Apparition of Tarkin, Space Battle.of Scariff, Vader and Krenic in Mustafar, Vader gran finale and Leia. (5)

 

For TFA...
I loved the effects of the Supremacy's silent destruction.
The Throne Room fight was so cool took me a while to realize we never saw lightsaber clashes.

ROTJ: Vader's redemption

TFA: lightsaber fly-by
RO: Vader smash
TLJ: Throne room

ATOC: Jedi battle on Geonosis & Yoda vs Dooku
ROTS: Mace vs Palpatine, Yoda vs Palpatine, & Obi Wan vs Anakin
RO: Vader at the end (really the entire ending tying into the beginning of ANH)

1. Phantom Menace (Darth Maul vs. obi wan and qui gon)
2. The empire strikes back (Luke vs Darth Vader)
3. Return of the Jedi (Last battle between Luke and Darth Vader)
4. The Force Awakens (Kylo Ren vs. Finn and Rey, especially when rey force grabs the lightsaber. Gave me so many chills)
5. The Last Jedi (Snoke throne room scene and battle)

There's a lot of other good scenes but these are by far the most impactful for me. Was really into the TLJ scene with projection luke until I found out it was a projection which completely took away the excitement from me. Don't hate it but I think it would have made that scene a top 3 for me if he was really there.

 

Inpressive. Until now TLJ is leading.

Well this will be a hard list.

ANH - Th trench run and death star destruction.

TESB - Vader and Luke fighting and reveal.

ROTJ - R2 sending out Luke's green lightsaber and Luke going nuts.

TPM - I've always like Qui Gon vs Maul. That scene is pretty awesome, imo. When Qui Gon says"Anakin drop!" And then Maul does that flip and it's on.

AOTC - Maybe the arena battle

ROTS - Anakin saving that ship was pretty epic. Also Anakin vs Dooku after Obi Wan gets trapped again.

TFA - When Rey steals the Falcon

TLJ - Too many to mention. Will come back after I think more about it.

TLJ has one of my favourite film shots in any movie I've ever seen. I can't find a screen grab of it, but its when Kylo exits his shuttle at the end, low angle, slightly tilted with his shuttle and guerrilla walkers in the background; it is a classic film shot, one of the greatest I've ever seen on film.

Well, I understand "epic" more or less as "grand in scale" (not just in terms of the spectacle, but also emotionally). And it's really hard to rank, because there's a lot of moments like this in Star Wars. The whole third act of RotS comes to my mind immediately. But speaking of TLJ alone, it has some damn powerful moments. Luke facing Kylo (the whole sequence from him walking out of the base up until his death) is like the epic incarnate. I really felt like I was watching a legendary event. And there's more - Yoda burning the tree, everything that goes down in Snoke's throne room...
