So, now that we know General Leia Organa will be back using reworked older footage in Episode IX I have began to feel like she may survive the trilogy.

It would be a decision mostly sentiment based, but I feel as though JJ is a sentimental director/writer.

I just struggle to believe they made the choice to bring her back just to kill her off or let her die.

To be fair, I initially would have argued this. I thought the correct choice would have been to announce Leia's death via the crawl. But that isn't happening and I find it hard to believe knowing that Carrie Fisher is no longer with us, that her character is being set up to die.

I wouldn't be shocked if as a sort of a tribute to Carrie Fisher's legacy her character, Leia, is allowed to live on in the Star Wars universe.

    What are your thoughts?

I always though Leia would be the only one of the OT to surive this trilogy. But then Carrie died and I wasn't sure anymore. Right now I'm back with her surviving. They wouldn't bring her back from the death, just for killing her off.

She is the last remaining Skywalker. The only way I see Leia dying in episode IX is if it is a sacrifice of her life saves her son Ben. For me this being a Skywalker Saga, the family name should end with some dignity. So Leia living at this point from what we know of the plot, is the only outcome I foresee if Lucasfilm protect the family name and not devalue the entire saga. This is speculating Kylo is too far gone as it appears or the movies have implied to this point.

I hope so. She and Chewie should get the their chance for a noble scene at the very end.

Given the unfortunate reality of the situation, I expect Leia's role in this film to be pretty limited. Probably just a couple of short scenes showing her in conversations with government types. Unfortunately, I doubt we will get to see her interact with Kylo. This could make her a background character for this movie. I don't see any need to kill off a character with such a small role in the movie. We may not get to see her in the final scene, but she does not need to die before it. Of course, we all would like to see more of Leia, but it is what it is. I hope she survives.

I think she will live with a final shot of her walking away from politics as the next generation vote to create a new republic.

I think it might be received as being in pretty poor taste to kill off Carrie Fisher’s character at this point. I mean, do what's best for the story. But if it isn't totally necessary, then I can't imagine they would.

I think flashback treatment. Hopefully they filmed a confrontation with Kylo. I really hate they did not bring Luke, Leia and Han together one last time.

Maybe they could have leia and kylo interacting with each other in the same way that he does with Rey, ie. not in the same place. Leia could just be wherever they have shots of her, just standing there doing nothing, and then they’ll have shots of kylo sensing her, with her voice taking to him over the top. Maybe they could get an impersonator in to do her voice, like they did with Darth Vader. I know they’ve ruled out doing a CGI version of her, but maybe getting someone in to do her voice is okay?

Interesting, but how could you explain this never occurred during the two former movies? And especially that moment in TLJ Kylo is about to fire on her?

Given that they're building her part out of cut footage, I don't think we can really expect to get more than one scene with Leia. Maybe two. So if Leia doesn't die relatively early on, her absence throughout most of the film will be pretty conspicuous. I think the point of having this scene isn't to keep Leia alive to the end of the movie, but to let Leia go out on a high note.

Leia get's to tell the world one last time who she is, what she fights for and what she's will to die for, rather than just die off screen, rather than just die off screen.

I don’t think they would go through the trouble of retrofitting old scenes of Leia in TFA and TLJ just to kill her off. If they were going to kill Leia off they could easily do it without her being on screen

... unless she dies for a noble cause: sacrificing herself for Ben for example.

Kylo killing both of his parents would make a great, dramatic storyline. I don’t really think of him as a monster at the moment, not in the same way as Darth Vader. He’s more of a... very angry person, with a huge chip on his shoulder. but killing Hans and then killing leia would elevate him up into one of Star Wars best-ever baddies.

I'm not sure I understand the logic here, Jedi MD. It seems to me that giving Leia a meaningful onscreen death is exactly the sort of thing that would make these scenes worth the trouble. Yes, they could have her die off screen, but isn't giving Leia her "swan song" worth the effort?

I can see something along the lines that both Kylo and Leia are put in a position that they both have to independently give up their lives to save the galaxy. So Leia gives up her life and then we see Ben struggle for an instant between choosing light or dark.
