Long time "Mr. Anonymous" lurker, but I decided to finally join the Cantina to ask the question in this thread title: Will the OT be re-released in theaters before TFA? I haven't seen anything about this possibility, only a rumor that the original OT may get re-mastered and released in ultra HD sometime before. As the father of an almost 5 year old who loves all things Star Wars (thanks to some Daddy indoctrination) but has yet to see any SW on the silver or TV screen (showed him a couple of YouTube clips), I really wanted my son's first REAL experience to be seeing the ANH in a theater the way I did when I was 7 years old.

If Disney really wants to capitalize on this cash cow and re-introduce a younger generation to SW in what I think is the right way, I just can't see why they wouldn't do this. If anyone has any insight, speculation, or comments on the subject, I would love to hear it. Thanks for a really entertaining place to get my SW fix (... and sorry for originally putting this in the wrong forum...)!

Since it's a sequel trilogy... I totally agree, it would be a missed opportunity to rerun the entire Saga on the big screen.

I was born in 1982, so I never had the opportunity to see the OT in its origonal glory on the big screen, but I was at least able to see all three movies in the theater when the special edition was released. If they are released again, I will be first in line, with my 3 year old daughter in tow. It would be incredible for the the first movie she ever sees in a theater to be ANH. That is a memory that would last her a lifetime.

They should totally surprise us with a special edition PT. With practical effects worked in Jar Jar edited out and snappier dialogue.

Hey Ewok Jedi, any particular reason to think so, or just speculation? Thanks for your response...

America has 300 million people so there are many fans, I have heard of cinemas that charged $0.50 to see the trailer for the force awakens. Whilst britains cinema's are usually vue or odion and i asked both if they would but the manager of my local odion stated that they wont bother as there wouldn't be enough profit in it I also asked the manager at view and she said to contact head office with a petition, maybe IMAX in london will but i haven't checked with them yet.
btw mr dark toilet you should stick around i only joined on saturday and look at my profile

    I seriously doubt it.
All things are focused on The Force Awakens in the theaters.
I did hear they are puting all 6 movies on Disney Channel sometime, but they will probably be the latest versions like the Blu-Rays.

For sure in some places, are you the Mr. Anonymous of the news side? Because there was a guy that went by that name over there and he posted some pretty funny comments.

One and the same... although I make no guarantees on future performance.;)

If you are right Darth Dwight, our evil overlord, I guess my conversion of the spare room into a full fledged theater has less than 300 days to be completed.

If they release the special editions in the theaters again I will be very sad. I already saw those back in '97 and was very let down.
If Disney is going theatrical with the OT, show us the original theatrical versions!

Doubtful. Would have to be soooo stealth to be in the works as we're less than 12 months out for TFA. Doesn't leave much time to create buzz around a re-release. Furthermore, to what end? To create buzz for TFA? Why bother... there are other cheaper channels available to do that... Disney XD and Rebels and pushing the OT on Disney Everywhere or whatever their mobile app is called.

Putting it in actual theaters is problematic for a few reasons:

-creates the impression that we will be getting similar screen time for the core returning heroes... and that's simply not the case; Han has a beefy role but otherwise TFA's about the new kids with Luke/Leia in the background

-it's underwhelming and smells of a cash grab; the last thing Disney wants to do is alienate core fans... and this would likely include 3D as most big films do... core fans might scream sacrilege

Fair points Wilybobo. I guess its just my personal agenda that wants it to be so for the sake of introducing my son to the GFFA.

I'm not sure it would necessarily alienate the core fan base though... I mean, who wouldn't want to see the original OT in the theaters the same way it was originally released? But I do agree that there would have to be some significant behind the scenes stuff already going on to make it happen in such short order and you would think some word of it would leak out...

I think the reason the six films aren't being re-released in theatres in 2015 is because 20th Century Fox holds all rights to A New Hope, and only distribution rights for the remaining five films until 2020. Darn lawyers. :)

"Only" 320 million people live in the United States, not 500 million.
