So i was thinking about maybe the resistance is the military section of the new republic, or a clandestine force to keep fighting the first order due to the corruption of the senate.

I think there is a New Republic, seperate completely to the resistance. I think the reistance will been seen as extremists in official NR circles though there will be pockets of sympathy for them.

My assumption at the moment is that the New Republic has no significant military force after Mon Mothma demilitarized them in Aftermath, so when the First Order rolls in they can't offer much *ahem* resistance.
Thus some people (i.e. Leia) take it upon themselves to do the fighting without New Republic help.

So in short, the New Republic is still around, but won't have much power or impact on the story, at least in TFA.

I'm going in with the thought that the Resistance is a sort of group of freedom fighters in a sense, with no official ties or assistance from the New Republic. Something along the lines of a volunteer force funded and supplied under the radar by the New Republic, but essentially keeping the NR's hands clean and the war-weary people happy. This includes the mixed-bag of volunteers, both the idealists and the fortune hunters, leading to the supposed gray moral area we'll see from the "good guys" if all those whispers prove true.

Still no clue though if the First Order is the only Imperial remnant or if others exist. I'm interested to see how this all will play out.

The NR exists in The Perfect Weapon short story anyway. It's not clear how long before TFA that is set but the blurb says "shortly before the events of..."

Somewhat related to this, has anyone heard or read anything about the Empire and the possible fragments that might exist? I haven't read any of the new material myself.

I only remember something from a recent (I think) article in one of the magazines that seemed to imply the First Order is not only a faction split from the fallen Empire, but the only remnant of the fallen Empire.

I think there will be a New Republic, but it'll be more of a backstory until we move further into the trilogy with our new heroes. I can see there being some really interesting themes of political intrigue within the trilogy, but they'll take more of a backseat to the characters and their personal journeys, something that will improve upon the approach taken in the prequels.

My take: The New Republic rules the galaxy nominally, holding most power and sway in the central worlds. At the Outer Rim the New Republic's power is weaker, and the First Order is now rising on the edges of civilized space to challenge the New Republic from the fringes inwards. The Resistance is an Outer Rim group opposing the rise of the First Order, probably with at least nominal support of the New Republic. That's my two credits. Beyond that, it depends on how complicated Disney/LFL is willing to make the ST. If things are not as black and white as before, then perhaps the New Republic is a bit corrupt and slow to act, ready to deem the Resistance a terror organization in an effort to quiet down the First Order, or something.

We already know there is a New Republic it was established soon after the battle of endor. Unless you are saying it has fallen already...

I think it has fallen already or the First Order is the Republic?

Which takes it to another level

That's quite the turnaround. Not sure I've seen anyone venture that thought.

But that'd just be the same basically. Supposedly good Republic has problems and then turns into the evil Empire. Then Empire falls and New Republic is formed. Supposedly good New Republic has problems and then turns into the First Order. Then First Order falls and is replaced by the New New Republic. Just back and forth.

I'm more a fan of the New Republic existing yet as very weak, war-weary, and too busy dealing with ordering its own systems to assist those other systems who -- having a fear of galaxy-wide government after the past few decades -- didn't heed the call to join up when the New Republic was formed. A New Republic that is ostensibly good but faces the moral dilemma by doing nothing is far more interesting... and somewhat a mirroring of real world themes.
