There's a very dubious article in the New York Daily News claiming that Yoda will return for Episode IX.
This article sounds like nonsense to me, but that doesn't mean Yoda won't return.

Will Yoda return in Episode IX? If so, what will be his role?

Everything is possible, but I don't hope so. He already had his role in TLJ and it was a good one. There is no need to hear from Yoda again. Okay, maybe you could make a similar shot to ROTJ at the ending of IX (hey, it's JJ after all :p).

Luke Skywalker's force ghost is a given, but rather than his force ghost or Yoda's force ghost I would like to see Anakin's force ghost.

How about something new that won't tear apart the fans? Like we c Yoda in the "ghost land" of the Force?

I can see Yoda or any other Force ghost work as a cameo in IX, but it could also come across as fan service. I don't know, if it adds to the story, then sure. But I feel like the Force ghost stuff should rely mainly on Luke.

I don't know, maybe it can be retconned so that the lightning was just an accident and Yoda just happened to raise his thumb at the exact moment he knew the lightning would strike the tree.

Or maybe it was Snoke. It could be retconned because that Force Ghost looked pretty sold flesh to me. It was much more "halo" around Yoda than a transparent Yoda.

I can't help but chuckle that people are upset by Yoda in The Last Jedi. Yes, he called down lightning. This is an awesome new piece of lore that's been introduced to force ghosts. This is a fantasy series. Why are people upset with fantasy elements?

    Imagine
Frodo is about maybe 10 steps to Mount Doom Volcano.
Suddenly Galadriel lands in front of him via Eagle.
Frodo: You mean we could have ridden the Eagle here all this time?
Galadriel: Shut up and throw the ring into the Fire.
    Frodo: But I thought....
Galadriel: If you won't throw it, give it to me.
Frodo: But won't you become an Queen, brighter than the dawn and evil?
    Galadriel: Nah.
Frodo Okay. Gives Ring to Galadriel. She throw it into the Fire, destroying the Ring.
    Frodo: Huh.
Galadriel: Yeah, new lore. Let's get out of here and have Half Elve children.

Yoda was in the third installment of the original trilogy so of course he will be in the third installment of the sequel trilogy.

Who knows...this is the same franchise where people shoot lighting out of their hands and move things without physical effort.

Do none of you realize fantasy have its own rules that within that specific fantasy the established rules must not be broken?

Do I think he'll return? No. There are two people in front of which Yoda can appear - Rey and Ben. Both of them have no emotional attachment to him, have never seen him before and might not even be aware he had existed at some point in the past. If Abrams wants a Force Ghost to teach Rey and/or Kylo a lesson, he'll obviously pick Luke because of their emotional attachment to him. I mean, sure, he can make Force Ghosts literally fight with Kylo but that would be stretching the whole concept of a Force Ghost a bit too far. So, no, I don't think we'll see Yoda in IX.

Canon is not a penal code. Sure, next iterations of a franchise should rather stick to canon than not, but IMO thinking of canon as these stone Decalogue tablets is very limiting. One man's breakage of canon is another man's expansion of it. The line between these two is blurried and differs from person to person.

Can you point me to the "10 Commandments of Force Ghosts?" I would love to read that canon novel.
I'm curious if this whole force ghost thing will finally be fleshed out.

For example: The discovery of force ghosts was the will of the force to help rebuild the Jedi Order. The ghosts can't be used against living creatures, but they could be used to train the new Jedi Order. This would allow Obi-Wan, Yoda, and Luke to help Rey train new Jedi and rebuilt what was destroyed.

I hope he does with Luke in tow. A nice Rey scene should do.

It's been repeated that JJ and Terrio want to connect the sequels with the originals and the prequels in IX, so yeah.

Yoda, Anakin, Obi Wan and Luke please. Anakin talking to Kylo is a MUST.

I can live without Anakin and Obi-Wan. I'm not exactly sure how Anakin would work unless they're prepared to recast Anakin as an older man. I never really understood the Anakin force ghost anyway. Yoda and Luke are easier to do and they could attempt to age up Ewan McGregor if they wanted to do that, but it would still be a little strange.

On the one hand, there's no directives on what a force ghost can and can't do. On the other, we have what we've seen so far. Force ghost have so far only appeared to people they are familiar with. They've also only appeared to other force users. So going by those loose guide lines I would lean toward no Yoda, since no one alive has ever met him (beyond R2, but he's not force sensitive... or is he? Next twist? haha).

At this point, I don't think anything would "surprise me", but anything beyond Luke FG would make me struggle to suspend my disbelief (there'd have to be some pretty sound explanation and I don't see that happening in this series).

If we'd be treated to see Anakin or Obi-Wan ghosts again, it would be in a Luke series between VI and VII.

Edit: On the other hand, what if Kylo realizes much of Rey's skill comes from his mind raping her, and he devises a way to mind rape force ghosts to even up the odds?

I agree with Anakin and Ben here. He is trying to finish what his grandfather started so why not have him in 9.

Great post. Lots of fans want Yoda (or Anakin, or Obi-Wan, or even Qui Gon). But it just reeks of fan service to have a force ghost other than Luke.

Rey and Ben have no idea who Yoda is. Neither met him IRL. So far, the only force ghosts we've seen are those whom have had a connection to the character they appeared to IRL.

Imagine Rey going back to Acht-To to find Luke's old green saber and some random blue ghost man appears that she's never met before:

Force Ghost: "Hello Rey. I am Guth-Ban Ozzard, the most powerful Jedi from many, many years ago. I'm here to teach you the ways of the Jedi!"

Rey: "WTF. I think I drank too much green milk...."

I'm inclined to think that Yoda was in TLJ solely for Luke - his foil, there to impart a final lesson to his former pupil. His story is done.
Rey is Luke's last student, so will be back to fulfil the role of mentor.
