Suppose that IX provided no additional backstory for Snoke, Maz, Rey, or Knights of Ren. Would this affect your opinion of TFA, TLJ, and the ST as a whole?

If EPIX is at least as good as the first two movies, no. In Leia's words: We have everything we need.

I know I'll get more thorough backstories in the books, comics, shows... like with the previous two trilogies. Hell, Lucas gave us the entire show of backstories in the Clone Wars.

Dont need back story on Snoke.
Knights of Ren should just be Luke other students. So other then confirming that dont need any other backstory. Now wouldnt be a bad idea to mention what does "Ren" come from. Was it some splinter off from Jedi like Sith were?
Dont need back story on Maz.

No, I don't think so. That being said, I expect there to be a handful of flashbacks in IX that provide plenty of backstory, mostly regarding Kylo. Out of anyone in the ST, he's the person whose past interests me the most.

As for Rey, I expect her to seek a second confirmation about her parents, much like Luke did with Yoda in RotJ. No idea who that would be though, other than Unkar Plutt I guess.

But if either of those don't happen, it doesn't do anything to negatively affect the ST for me.

It would depend on how or why it's omitted.
If it's omitted as a cliffhanger ending, then it would piss me off greatly.
If it's omitted because it's not important to the story being told, then no it won't change anything.

I don't think we should spend too much time in a grand finale of anything on filling "holes" in the backstory. I guess some more stuff on Ben Solo wouldn't be bad but overall, I don't really care. Like we don't need a lecture on how Snoke got control over the Imperial Remnant. There are #issues with how TFA established a new status quo, but more backstory is not really what this film needed.

Again, it's about relevant backstory. We don't need to know what Luke did on Sunday. Also, it's the 'final' chapter. Don't except a lot of backstory...

Like everyone else here so far, not really. I just want the Ep IX to make everything feel cohesive; any major gaps can be filled in with comics and tv shows.

I couldn't agree more. I think we get too hung up on back story all the time with our favourite characters. Take Indiana Jones for instance. You don't need any back story for any of those characters in order to enjoy the movie. Now I know Star Wars is a bigger world and larger storyline, but sometimes characters can be just who they are on screen, nothing more, nothing less. If they are depicted well enough you don't really need more.

Now that being said a bit of backstory on Rey if it does exist , and only if it serves the story, great.

My hope is that episode IX will harken back to sign post events of the past to paint a broader picture.

It depends. We definitely need some backstory for some aspects of the story. For example: Ben Solo's fall to the dark side, the KOR, Anakin's/Vader's part in this story etc.

At most, I expect a scene or two. Like, Obi-Wan and Yoda talking to Luke on Dagobah (Return).

the great irony is that Ben himself probably needs to see this back story.. he says he wants to kill the past, but the past is clearly driving him.
I think i understand Ben, and i'm not sure i physically need to witness events that made him who he is now... but i think we will see it, and i think that a large portion of the audience need to see it.

to give a general answer to the thread.. i just want to see what everyone does next.

Aye. The "backstory" would be something that helps drive home the ending.

The problem with the ST is not the lack of backstory, it's more about the narrative that should have been there from the start. I believe more and more the cliffhanger ending for TFA was just a bad idea as they could have had a nice 3 arc story for Luke. Episode 7 could have been him training Ben Solo and the creation of Kylo Ren (Han could have somehow died when the The Knights of Ren purge the Jedi Order), and Luke has to live with that which leads to....Episode 8 could have been about Luke going in hibernation and turning his back on the Resistance/Jedi Order, and Episode 9 could have been how Rey redeems him and he comes back to win the war with her (then he dies at the end of Episode 9).

Instead of tying all 9 movies together (which I think is next to impossible), they could have split it in a way still ties them together:

1-6 The Rise, Fall and Redemption of Anakin Skywalker

4-9 The Rise, Fall and Redemption of Luke Skywalker

That's a great point, @Maximus .... I would love to find out exactly how much Ben knows about Anakin / Vader, and his redemption by Luke at the very end.

I feel like there could be some more world building. Little late in the game in the trilogy for it but if done properly and adds a little more context to the previous movies that could only be a good thing.

He knows that Vader was redeemed by Luke or how Snoke put it, turned. He saw it as weakness by Anakin Skywalker. At least Snoke made him think so. The force ghost of Anakin can tell Kylo more about what really happened.

Not a criticism, but an observation. Isn't this really what all the Great Villains miss. Vader went dark because of a self fulfilling prophecy. He dream't Padme would die and was basically driven mad by not being able to stop it, and ultimately he caused her death.

I think you sort of hit the nail on the head. No one is begging for a backstory on how Henry Jones got his PHD or his job at the college. It is just a part of his character. I wish we were at a period of time in film fandom where we could enjoy movies again. But we are not there, by any means.

But I am just hoping JJ and team put together a great finale. That's all, and it is a big enough task in itself.

Indiana Jones are standalone movies and are different then the ST which is a linear story that each part forms the puzzle. The ST is part 7-9 of a continuing Saga that supposedly had and ending in ROTJ. When you have Snoke as the new villain, you need some context as to why he is appearing in Part 7? He is old and disfigured so he was obviously alive before ROTJ, so where was he then? Does he have anything to do with The Emperor? Was he an enemy of The Emperor and hiding out? You can’t have this powerful dark side user (possibly more powerful then The Emperor) now in this Skywalker Saga narrative and give no detail on where he came from?

That’s the whole point that so many fans miss. We aren’t asking for a backstory on every character, but this is a key character that is playing a huge part in this continued 9 part Saga story that needs some explanation as to why he is suddenly a part of Part 7?

Disney can’t have it both ways. If you want to call the movies 7,8,9 and use the OT characters to get more people in the theater, then we atleast need a context of why this Trilogy is relevant next to the PT/OT.

They could have easily set this Trilogy 500 years after ROTJ and nothing was related to the 1-6 story. Then you could do whatever you want with Rey, Kylo Ren and Snoke cause that is a totally different story and has no narrative with the PT/OT.
