As I said I'm only talking about the flight simulator games, maybe it was different in other parts of the EU.
At least there the letter didn't seem to have any significance on how old the design was. There was actually one called Z95 headhunter which was older than all the others I mentioned.

To my limited knowledge, the rebel fleet(fighters) were put together thru theft, buying second hand/worn out, donations & other dubious methods. That's why the fighters were different and the rebel fleet both command-support ships & fighters were spread out.
This is partially explained by Vader's line: "The Rebel fleet is amassing near Sullest" in ROTJ(1983).

I've gotta admit.. Ralph McQuarrie's Y-Wing concepts looked great. Since the new T-70 X-Wing design was heavily borrowed from McQuarrie's T-67 concept from ANH, it makes you wonder if they'll use McQuarrie's design direction for the Y-Wings if they appear in TFA.

I'd love to see some Y-Wings in TFA, and I think your A-10 analogy is spot on.

Note it says "Pirates Cove", I bet the xwings flying over the water must be flying toward Maz Kanata's castle.

That's a great find. I never thought of it like that.

Does anyone know if the B-Wing was developed to officially replace the Y-Wing? (in canon material?)

I'm not sure there is any info about this in the current canon, in the xwing and tie fighter games it certainly seemed so, the bwing was better than the ywing in almost every way.

If I recall correctly, the Y-wing was supposed to be the oldest model they had in their fleet for the OT. I'm not sure if they'd update it or opt for a different design altogether. B-wings seem far too heavy and A-wings far too light to straight-up replace it, so I'd still like to see something like a Y-wing to fill that sort of middle spot.

I would hope that any making an appearance would get a slight modification like the TFA X-wings. I never really liked the Y-wings (appearance-wise )until we saw them in TCW. I'd probably opt for a completely different design though to be honest.

Maybe the new T-70 X-Wing is more of a multirole fighter and attack craft rather than just a fighter - something like the role of the F/A-18 Hornet maybe? Resulting in there not being a need for ships like the Y-Wing and B-Wing anymore.

Sometime last year, the local TRU had a huge stack of the Hasbro Clone Wars Y-Wing's marked down to $29.95. I hadn't planned on buying one, but at that price, I couldn't pass it up. I knew it was longer and bulkier than the stripped down Y-Wings of the OT, but I was really surprised at just how big the ship really is.

The Republic Attack Shuttle and the ARC-170 are both big ships, but even they are smaller than the TCW Y-Wing-

Anyway, I'd love to see a new type of Y-Wing in TFA. Perhaps something subtle that falls in between the "full fendered" old model, and the stripped down newer one. Maybe a 2nd ball turret in the belly in addition to the one topside, then finish it off with the blue and white or black and orange paint scheme of the new X-Wings.

Nope the y wing cannot be replaced in purpose.

Don't think there will be any Y-Wings in TFA. However, there is hope for the Y-Wing. You will see the Y-Wing most likely in Rogue One.......

What was the in-universe reason that the Rebels stripped down the Y-Wings?

Anyway, I'm all for updated Y-Wings and B-Wings. X-Wings and A-Wings already look perfectly modern in the OT.

To make them faster, parts breaking without any replacement parts being available, adding new, better parts, and for TFA having them being broken down to rebuild new ships.

I thought I read in an early script prediction that Y-Wings may have showed up near the end of the movie. Just because we have not seen them yet does not mean that we will not see an advanced one in the space battles near the end of TFA. I am really looking forward to this and if they show up on screen, you can bet I will be super hyped to see the new Y-Wings in action. Can't wait to see all the new ships that could potentially show up on screen. Didn't we read something about C or D-Wings potentially coming in the sequel trilogy?
