Yes, this book can definitely be read out of order. It is a collection of 40 short stories and each one is a different perspective on the events of A New Hope. Going cover to cover on this might drive you further away from Star Wars books. They are not all great and some of them go on for way too long. But there are some really fun ones too.

I've decided to read as many of the old EU books as I can, and to do so in order. I just finished Dawn of the Jedi, which I really enjoyed. On to The Old Republic: Revan.

    Current Canon reading list:
    Lost Stars (currently reading)
    Battlefront: Twilight Company
    Battlefront 2: Inferno Squad
    Thrawn Alliances
    Bloodlines
    Aftermath (have on audiobook)

Recently finished Catalyst, Tarkin, and Thrawn.

Anybody have any other good recommendations for Canon books? I really like any of the books that are either focus on the Empire or are more combat heavy.

Lords of the Sith is combat heavy and is very much focused on the Empire. Leia: Princess of Alderaan while not combat heavy and focused on Leia, has a great deal to do with the Empire with appearances from some of its more prominent leaders.
Tarkin plays a featured role in this book.
Ahsoka and A New Dawn are similar to Leia in that they are tangentially about the Empire, providing more perspectives of how The Empire is devastating planets around the galaxy. And they both have more combat scenes than Leia, especially A New Dawn. I would put all of these ahead of Battlefront 2, which was not as combat heavy as I expected and I wasn't that into it overall (although I did love the campaign mode of the video game). The rest of your list looks solid! Can't wait for Thrawn Alliances!!!

I'm super behind on the comics.

I just ordered Star Wars Trade #6 today (Out Among the Stars).

I need to get The Ashes of Jedha and Legacy's End, too, as well as Aphra's second trade and The Screaming Citadel.

After that, when I'm hypothetically caught up, I want to start Poe Dameron.

i almost ordered the Vader omnibus, but i think i will try to find it at half price books or something.
i wish they would announce the Poe omnibus.

or maybe i should just quit being kvetchy and get the smaller trades. XD

p.s. i did just order the Droescher Jedi the Last: Star Wars Part the Eighth, as well as the "Art of" TLJ (which was on sale for $13 at Amazon!).

TBH, I didn't even know there was an omnibus.

Have you read the Vader run before?

They might announce something for Poe after his run ends. I think it's supposed to be over this September.

yeah, i've been waiting for Poe to close in the hopes they'll have one big collected volume instead of buying all the small ones.

i started the Vader run a bazillion years ago but didn't keep up. so i read like the first few issues with Doctor Aphra--enough to know very vaguely who she is.
but i've been dying to read the rest!

So I went on a bit of a buying spree while waiting for Thrawn Alliances to come out. Picked up, Leia, Lords of the Sith, Dark Disciple, and Ashoka as well as started reading the comics and just finished Darth Maul. Now I just need to find time to read all of them along with the other 4 (Twilight Compnay, Inferno Squad, Bloodlines, Aftermath) that I have picked up.

I'm looking forward to reading them all. Hoping to get through them and give myself enough time to read Last Shot and Most Wanted before Solo comes out on Blu-ray

that's seriously ambitious! good luck! the Solo books are great fun!

    • Guardian of the Whills is one of my favorite new canon books!
    • Phasma is the worst; it's beyond the pale of a combination of weird, nonsensical, confusing, and just bizarro-world characters. it has one high point. but just one. hahahaha
    • i really enjoyed Inferno Squad much more than Twilight Squadron. #TeamDark
    • Cobalt Squadron made me irrationally angry. i'm still working through those emotions ~ hahahahaha
i told my brother to send Thrawn Alliances to me in the mail.

guess i either need to finish the first one or go watch the cheater catch-up videos on youtube since the comic book doesn't come out until september 11th. : o p

i did see a post on twitter today of a scene between Anakin and Thrawn that made me chuckle, so that's a good omen.

I have heard you don't need to necessarily read Thrawn to get Thrawn: Alliances. I have been reading the comic so I'm pretty much aware of what happens on that one.

I have left Tarkin out of the list because I had struggled to read it on the past and cannot get past the first pages. I don't know if it's Luceno's style - it sort of happened with Catalyst before. Perhaps I'll try again later.

yeah, i didn't make it through Tarkin or Catalyst either, and i'll admit i didn't try very hard.
could well be the writing style. i just found those two books needlessly dense and labored.

if i hadn't broken my phone last winter, i'd be able to see where i left off in the first Thrawn.
it was somewhere in the middle, i think. Thrawn had gotten promoted and was saying "elementary, my dear Vanto," for the 187th time.

i might flip through and see if i can find my place; if not, maybe i will just jump into Alliances cold.
i'm encouraged by the reviews (including the SWNN one) that say it's not at all like the first book. XD

I enjoyed both Catalyst and Tarkin but I agree that they definitely weren't the easiest ones to read. Really enjoyed the backstory behind Tarkin though and diving into what drives him.

i did love Tarkin's appearance in Lost Stars; it was slightly creepy, but he also just seemed so wonderfully human for a change. : D

I love anything having to do with the Empire, so I'm hoping we get some more stories about Imperial Officers, Troopers, Spys, etc... It would be cool if there was something like The Departed where an imperial officer infiltrates the rebels and a rebel spy transliterates the Imperial ranks.
