    Wookiepedia states C3PO is approx 112-130 years old by TFA(2015). C3PO was a diplomatic aide/protocol droid for about 80 years for a senior official in a different star system then was trashed & left in Mos Espa.
    That's where Anakin found him then refit/re-charged him back to his original design. With a few replaced parts and wiring.

    R2D2 is a different story. He's a astro-mech droid of an unknown age. I'd have to check on it, but I think he's roughly the same age as C3PO or maybe a few years older.

    I think he beat Chewie one to many times in the space chess/wrestling thingy. Maybe his memory had been wiped so he didn't remember Han Solos advice. ;)

    I hope his arms aren't actually ripped off, as that could come off a bit cheesy. In fact, Wookies are just known to pull peoples arms out of socket...

    The rust-red arm is clever if there is a good story.
    It'd be a funny running gag if people ask C3PO how his arm turned red but they are interrupted when he starts to explain it.

    Rust...he's getting old. I think the film will make it clear that R2 and 3PO are well past their prime mechanically. Droids get old too.

    I think it is simply the same as his silver leg. A replacement part that was not of the same color and the majority of his outer shell.

    When you think about it, C3PO got ripped up, blown up, beaten, etc quite a lot.
    Scialcios Crumb rips his eye out! He he's demolished in Bespin Cloud City, he's had a arm pulled off in ANH.
    Having a red color replacement arm is the least bad thing.
    Don't forget, K3PO gets blown up in the Hoth Echo Base battle.
