I think for now, Luke is disillusioned. He's learned a lot, but he'd also become very cynical. I think Rey is likely to pull him back from that edge. The Jedi are too tightly linked with the Star Wars Galaxy, so I don't see them going extinct. Perhaps this film will be his call to action, proving the need for the Jedi again. Rey can do that. Perhaps a First Order attack on him or Leia could do that. But I see this film ending with Luke coming back as everyone's favorite Jedi Master, setting up his role as an active player in IX.

It'll definitely be interesting, with this little bit of new context, seeing VII again, thinking about everyone's prior expectations and understanding of Luke and the Jedi, while he's on this island being so incredibly disappointed, and being completely convinced, unlike everybody in VII, even Ben and Snoke, that the Jedi are or will be extinct. The expectation has been, in VII, that the Jedi are going to return, and be a threat to the Dark Side again. So I think VII is about the new generation (as well as the rest of the old) having to convince him (whether they're with Luke or not, physically) that they truly do need the Jedi again.

Edit: I only just thought of this, as I was typing my reply in the TLJ thread, but the theme I really see, per Daisy's comment, is that of returning heroes, from retirement. Like Daisy said, sometimes you meet your heroes, only to discover that they aren't who you knew them to be. Those stories often end with the fan working to convince their hero that the world really needs them again.

The poor guy has spent decades playing pawn to the ancient whims of powerful cliques only to find his best intentions serve galactic oppressors. I'm guessing he's still stuck in the quagmire of trying to figure how best to reconcile the use of Force with galactic harm-reduction!

There's bound to be a lesson here somewhere...perhaps beware getting caught up in sacred orders of powerful and creepy space wizards?

I think it's great for Luke's character. Think of where he was - so eager to be a jedi like his father. And now he's hardened and learned some tough truths. Then we have Rey who was reluctant, she shows up ready to probably be convinced to take this on and Luke is like - oh, this is a bunch of BS. It's great for Rey's character too. She just came to learn of her gift. And now she has to convince not only Luke that this is a legacy worth fighting for but she has to convince herself too.

I don't think the "jedi" will end. But the old teachings have to be adjusted because they clearly have failed and wreaked havoc. I'm Catholic, but I'm not a Catholic of 500 years ago. I'm not even a Catholic of today really but it means different things to different people. Anyway, I don't see the term or designation of "jedi" going away anytime soon. But the concept and teachings will likely be more personal and fluid.

Did anyone watch this video? If so what is everyone's opinion about it?

Do you agree with Mark or disagree?

I want to see Luke Skywalker at his peak.

I'll always love Mark and admire his dedication to the fans, but his comments of late, and in general about the ST, give the impression of a passive aggressive whiner.

Mark has had quite the career, and yet seems somewhat upset that he didn't become a huge star like Ford.

A good example of his entitlement is when he complains about having to get into shape for TFA. He seems to think being in shape for films is only necessary for action scenes -- as though ending TFA with a fat Luke would have been a fantastic ending.

Honestly, I think Mark should talk more to a therapist than let his years of aggression towards Lucas, Fisher, and Ford keep tainting his comments. Even in his praise of Carrie he can't help but insult her.

His comments are beginning to make me hope for an early exit from the ST. Stop participating if you hate it, Mark. No one is forcing you do to anything.
