I didn't know this thread existed. -- I once was a fan of TWD (mainly comics). I think I've read the comics until the Whisperers were introduced. The TV series seemst to be almost at that point, right?
I've watched the first 5 seasons of TWD (season two is my favorite one). I came back for Negan, because Negan (and Dwight) were my favorite characters in the comics. Jeffrey Dean Morgan makes a good Negan, but the story is weak compared with the comics. Mainly because of the changes.
Killing off Carl. Are you serious? His arc with Negan was so important and great in the comics!

Right now I have to say Fear The Walking Dead is the better TWD. But even that show has major ups and downs.

I was out before that. By the 3rd episode I was all 'let Negan win, be Judith's new daddy, and kill everyone'. It was so dumb. That war the way they did it. Last season I was cheering Richonne and crying with the whole Sasha/Abraham story, and the Glenn/Maggie deal. It went downhill fast.

The comic book is better than the TV show. I stopped watching after season 6. The villains all seem almost the same. In the comic the villains were done better especially Nagen. In the comic Negan seem like he's in his late 20s early thirties has a harem etc, and the comic book has ended, the writer had nothing else to say. The ending was shocking, to say the least. I'd like to see if they would ever translate the ending into TV show, but the major character left the show, so the TV show is its own thing.

In the last comic book, the writer explains in-depth why he ended the series. The writer knows how much his audience loves the series and his thoughts were genuine. The showrunners of the TV show should follow suit, but I think they won't because the IP generates considerable revenue. I appreciate the writer for ending the series when he did. he has other comic books that netflix should consider turning into TV shows. He's a really good writer I think that's why they made him CEO of Image comic books.

Let's REBOOT this thread! So much has happened in TWD Universe.....let's talk!!!

The Ones who Live - Wow what a series, TWD at the epic scale. Daryl Dixon - Did not know what to expect here and was very pleasantly surprised.

Thoughts on the way forward? I want to discuss more but I don't think these series have made it outside of the US as far as being able to be seen....

    Yeah!
It seems @Lock_S_Foils and I have a similar path with TWD: I stopped watching after the infamous Negan episode and only picked up again later to catch up before the finale a few years later. I'm so glad I did and I am one of those who have watched all the webisodes and spin-offs as well. I really appreciate how they built this world and for the most part they have had no fear of going outside of the lines and bending genres. I'm up for any and all discussion of anything from the comics to The Ones Who Lived and what's next...

We do know that Daryll Dixon : Book of Carol is next and I'm excited for that. The DD series was so beautiful visually and really gave Norman a chance to spread his wings (pun intended) and develop his character so well. I'm happy to see that Carol is coming back and in my head that whole drama about her dropping out of S1 was all just really well planned trickery on their parts. I think that beyond that, knowing that Morgan and Dewayne and Sherry are all headed back East, we could very well get some great stories.

So are we allowed to discuss without spoiler tags here?

No idea. Could they add a Spoiler tag to the thread? I would assume there is a statute of limitations on that sort of thing but I don't know for sure.

Only reason I mention this is that @Addi Ras told me that The Ones who Live or DD are on AMC+ which is not available in England........

    We could add
to the title or you can use the spoiler-hiding function in the comments? I don't know what's best; should we just abandon the idea of having an open, spoiler-free discussion thread (seeing as it has been inactive for 4 years anyway), or should we hide spoiler talk in the otherwise open thread? Or, we could even have one spoiler thread and one spoiler-free one, but there's hardly enough activity here to warrant that, I would argue.

    I'm good with whatever :)

I would say adding a tag to the title is best since this discussion could cover several years back and many different series and its kinda hard to know what is even a Spoiler anymore...
I also agree it's unlikely that there will be much traffic here anyway. Really I'm just lazy and hate using the boxes:p

Here's a good discussion topic. Who is the most interesting new character introduced since the finale of the main show? Could even break it down further and say Good Guy, Baddie and group?

For me, Good Guy would be Isabelle from DD, the nun/aunt/freedom fighter. Really good backstory and the actor just KILLS. I'm hoping for maybe some tension between her and Carol in S2??
Baddie is the Croat from Dead City. Yeah, he's seemingly just copycat of early Negan, but there is a deep darkness in this character and again the actor is amazing.
For group, I gotta say the Caravan that Michonne runs into strikes me as fascinating simply due to their size. It's a massive group and they seem very organized. We may never see them again, but they could be valuable allies or formidable enemies.

That's me spreading it out among the spinoffs and going with those who have survived. Honorable mentions/memoriam go to Okafor from TOWL, and my overall favorite across the board, Nat. I totally get that his death served as a massive motivator for Michonne going forward, but damn, that character would have been outstanding to mix with the Alexandria group.

that's the main reason I stopped watching the show... I'm a huge fan of the comic book series, (comic book guy, hehe...) and the villains were sort of unique, but on the show they all seemed rather similar with slight variations... I tried to return to the show, because I saw a few trailers with villians from the comic book series, but alas, I might be done with the show.

3 years ago can't recall exactly when, Kirkman re-issued the entire comic book series (193 issues) in color, but what intrigued me the most was at the end of each comic book, he discussed how he developed the story for each issue.

As an aspiring writer and artist, I collected the color series mostly for that, ( I've got floppies/single issues, trade paper backs, and digital issues of the entire original series) and David Finch's incredible covers. I'll return to AMCs series eventually, the Daryl and the Michonne series trailers are very interesting. I play Call of duty here and there, and I use Rick and Michonne skins.

I used to watch the talking dead right after the show... fond memories.

I was shocked when Robert Kirkman ended the comic book run of TWD with issue 193. the letter page at the end of each issue was worth the cover price in and of itself. there are a hoard of TWD fans out there, some really angry that Kirkman ended the comic book series.

The TV show is so popular I didn't see that coming. Kirkman stated he had nothing else to say which was shocking to say the least, so when I see all the spin-off shows, I'm like yeah Hollywood is gonna milk TWD till it really sucks... but I see the creators really love this IP, and the spin-offs have gotten good reviews, so we'll see I'll jump back on soon...

Kirkman is a gifted writer, I'm so into INVINCIBLE. He's got a ton of other works like Outcast, FirePower, and one of his early works is a comic book comedy about a Pope/Priest that's a superhero. the guy is talented.

That's interesting, I thought for the most part the villains were fairly faithfully done from the comics to the show. Aside from a few physical differences, the Governor and Negan were pretty close, the Whisperers were dead on, as was the Commonwealth. Of course the story veered off drastically, several characters swapped roles and fates in translation, yet somehow it all kinda works as two separate things. I personally didn't like how the comic ended, it all seemed very hasty and rushed, although overall I thought it was brilliant.

I do think one of the best things done for the universe was the spinoffs. Fear TWD was great in spots and terrible in others, but it opened up the world, quite literally. World Beyond opened up the timeline, and these last 3 served to "reset" the story for those beloved main characters to hopefully lead to bring it all together into new stories.

I guess its a matter of tastes... I loved Negan in the comic book series I was anticipating his arrival on the show but I was underwhelmed even though I like the actor who portrayed him. He did a decent job, IMHOP.

I watched Fear of TWD, but honestly didn't care for it. ( maybe I was experiencing Zombie fatigue. I can't understand superhero fatigue though, but yeah I need to take a break from the Zombies hehe...) I watched the first few episodes and never returned which hurt me allot because I love this series. I'm a huge fan so I'll revisit the Fear of TWD and the other spin-offs. Other than that, your assessment of the series is spot on... maybe I expected too much because the TWD original series is really good.

I agree with this... that's why I believe Kirkman was right he truly had nothing else to say... sad but true.

Fear TWD really goes up and down over the seasons but it has some great moments and characters sprinkled throughout. Like most IPs I feel like you gotta trudge through some mud to find the good stuff and it all makes more sense when seen as an entirety. I recommend TWD World Beyond for a fairly quick and well done series. It was done as a one-off limited series and does a good bit of world building.

Yeah it felt like he got more invested with Invincible and maybe he felt like he had lost control of TWD, or he felt like Gimple had a better grasp so he just decided to get out. I do like how he just dropped the end of the comic with no warning, it's just I feel the story deserved a better end. That's why I think the show kept a solid fan base actually.

Same scenario here. I know it was comic book canon, but that head-bashing scene was (IMO) The Worst Unforced Error in the history of TV. (I won't say what I think The Worst Unforced Error in Movie making was.) :) ;)

Yes, people died throughout the series, but (again IMO) there were key players that the audience identified with who gave the show its heart and drove the show's massive audience numbers at the time. People like Daryll, Carol, and Glen & Maggie as a couple. I love the actress who plays Maggie but her character was never the same for the audience without Glen. I've never watched her spin-off series because the very idea of a show with her and Negan disgusts me.
Ditto! The wifey and I watched the Rick & Mashone spin-off but (IMO) it paled in comparison to Daryll's series.
