I've been thinking this, too, but from a more nuts-and-bolts storytelling angle. Mostly about how they're actually going to bring this out in the character relationships.

For example, they're probably going to go with something like how Han stuck around for a while because of Leia, but eventually got disillusioned by the NR and went his own way. How for a lot of the younger generation across the galaxy, the NR is 'just as bad' as the Empire in many aspects, etc etc.

Bringing your themes out in your character relationships is incredibly difficult to actually execute well. On the other hand, executing it OK/fairly well is actually incredibly easy. This is how you get TPM, Prometheus, etc. and all the 'You guys just didn't get it' hoopla trailing in the wake of unsubtle writing.

Excluding the making Star Wars article for a moment I think Leia as a military commander makes sense. We've seen the princess, we have seen the politician and rebel, but what we don't know is how the revelation of Darth Vader as her father changed her. If she is indeed general Organa she obviously has not embraced her heritage or at least it seems that way to me. Also leading the resistance implies military actions so she may be a general. Who but a general would order the firing of the Resistance superweapon?

Much anger in Leia I sense.

From new Oscar Isaac iO9 interview:

“'Just think about the words,' Isaac told io9 in an interview this weekend. 'One is to rebel against, so it’s an offensive action. Resisting is on the defensive. So I think the big difference is that [The Resistance] is even more cornered.'
"That does not sound like the grand victory people imagined for the Rebellion after the end of Return of the Jedi. Isaac also said 'There’s less of them' and 'It’s slightly less organized,' which pretty much paints a picture of the universe we’re going to see in Star Wars: The Force Awakens."

As in, "more grounded in reality."
