Rian Johnson is writing and directing EP 8.

As for EP 9. Not sure who is writing it.

I was very disappointed when I heard that JJ wouldn't be returning to direct IX, which had been the rumor for some time. I was even more disappointed when I saw that Trevorrow would be the director instead. I feel like Trevorrow is an unispired choice, and I wonder if he was on the radar before the success of Jurassic World or if it was a reactionary decision. That being said, I DO have a great deal of faith in Rian Johnson, he seems to be a strong choice, and it's promising that he is going to be at least providing a treatment for IX.

I think that JJ and Kasdan will be "one and done's" but they were the perfect choices to start this new era of Star Wars off on the right foot.

Rian Johnson is writing and directing VII. This was confirmed on his Twitter.

I still think Rian should get Kasdan to help him fine tune. That could still happen.

I believe Rian is also taking on some writing for IX... mostly just a "treatment."

I haven't seen Jurassic World (I don't really care to see it either), but from what I've heard, most of the problems seem to be limited character development. At least with this he will have 2 whole movies to draw upon. Most of the important work with setting up the characters and the conflict, will be out of the way.

Kasdan will be too busy with the Han Solo film...

I believe Kasdan's absence from VIII actually supports certain plot rumours for VII.
Han Solo appears to be the main thing which drew Kasdan into VII and the Han Solo anothology film to begin with.
Kill off Han in VII, and Kasdan has no motivation to stick around for VIII or IX

To be honest I can't see past TFA right now. I am sad that JJ won't be back to direct simply because his love and passion for SW.

Actually, a third person was involved in the writing of the original trilogy: Leigh Brackett has a writing credit on ESB (for the screenplay). However, more importantly for the present discussion, I think that Abrams and Kasdan have been involved in the decisions regarding the major plot points. The story group already knows how the sequel trilogy will end (i.e., who will live, who will die and who will be redeemed). Rian Johnson has written the first draft for Episode VIII, but it is possible that Abrams and Kasdan will read and comment on the draft and Johnson will then try to incorporate those notes in the second draft.

Considering that JJ an Kasdan are effectively laying the tracks for the the entire ST with TFA and that JJ is staying on to produce episode 8 and 9, there HAD to have been some collaboration in the writing process with Rian Johnson.

Rian has posted pics on twitter of the script and his branded working diaries. Colin has posted pics of his diaries, but that's a long ways off. I wouldn't put it past Kathleen Kennedy to rope JJ in a producer/executive producer role, so he may have input on scripts but probs not writing credits. Kasdan is a wild karrde but I really hope he stays involved.

Of course, Kasdan did mention he is involved on one of the anthology films with his son.

Has Kasdan done anything worth any praise in the last 15-20 years? I was looking at his credits in the relatively recent past and nothing was even close to being good. I don't get what is with this confidence in him. Anyone have anything in mind that says he still has it?

Kasdan has credits as of two-day as producer for ep VIII and writer/producer for IX on old mate wikipedia:
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lawrence_Kasdan

IMDB (more credible) has him as writer for TFA, writer for "untitled Han Solo Star Wars anthology film", co-producer for TFA, and executive-producer for "untitled Han Solo Star Wars..."

Even though Kasdan has not had much success beyond the GFFA, I'd still like to see him stick around on a more permanent basis. It would be cool if he landed a spot on the Storygroup. Perhaps SW is just his niche and that's why his other efforts have been less than fruitful. He's been so involved between both the OT and now the ST, that I'd like to see his work with the franchise continue. He's worked closely with both the original creator and the new team. This kind of continuity is important, to my mind. However, perhaps further judgement should be held off until we see TFA.

shadows of the empire was pure gold from my point of view.

we could say that kubrick still managed to produce great work even though he waited 10 years in between some of his works

It's mostly because he wrote TESB. It's as simple as that really.

It's just that people cite him as one of the big reasons the movie is bulletproof in terms of quality which I really think is a really big stretch since he hasn't written anything good enough in decades.

Very fair point. He works really well with Ford and Kathleen Kennedy, he wrote shadows of the empire, and he took a decade through the 2000s off so not sure if it's fair to 'in decades'. But still a really fair point - he's put up like a pillar or tentpole of Star Wars, to connect TFA to the OT. He may not be all that, or live up to that hype, but he does say the right things for this fan to have a little faith in his work.
